Baaaah I want to play the damn game. -.- Stupid error 33 or 37 or 315100 or whatever.

About joining games I actually suspect the game prefers max of 2 players since way too often when my team mate leaves another one joins almost immediately, and no one more comes.

I'm got the red beam spell with wizard not long ago and I noticed it's damage is said to be like half of the blue ice ray. I see there are several topics about this on the forums. Why the first spell does more damage and works just the same as the last spell of that category. The only advantage is piercing for the red beam. So far I find the blue beam better with the runes I have. Quite disappointing.
The comparisation of Starcraft 1 and 2 stories is like the starwars prequels compared to the first 3 movies.

-Edit. Im back on, keep trying took me 7times of retyping my PW.

Decided to pay attention to the AH and see what would happen. Managed to sell all my annoying emeralds and got some petty cash. Won an auction for a decent sword, woot!

Why the hell can't you sort the auction list by time left or bid? That looks like an intentional decision to force me to look at all the other auctions, which is retarded. Let the buyers have good search tools and the market will find real prices much faster. Right now, it's 99% retards overpricing their goods, and I don't care about stuff that won't be done for a day and a half because by then I'll have gained several levels and will need new gear again.

From my post scavenging, there's a networking issue that, this morning, caused the achievement server to malfunction, which in turn caused the others to start malfunctioning. They took the entire EU cluster down to find the issue and fix it. It's hardly maintenance, more of a emergency downtime to prevent lasting damage.

On the one hand... I've often wished I could sort by time remaining in auction... On the other hand... The fact that you can't is probably what's allowing me to snag good shit for practically free. So I'm kind of torn

Dunno what you're on about. There have been people bitching about the online only nature of the game for a long time, and they're still at it, but they're a minority. Game is great. It's awesome, more than fine. Having played it, I actually like the way they've designed it to be online. Yes, server downtimes suck, but it's worth it IMO.

@Paladin, the fact that the complaints about the always online DRM is a minority. Frankly its shocking how people are willing to let Blizzard get awa- Oh right. Blizzard. The company that can package shit and it would still sell like hot cakes. And having played it, I was completely put off by having 300 ping and all the fun that brings while playing single player. Admittedly I'm not a fan of the gene so I can't comment on the game play (though my Brother who's copy I played is nothing short of addicted to it...), but the mess of a launch and the horrible DRM would of been a huge hit to any companies reputation, if it wasn't Blizzard's game.

This I find shocking. I mean, EA have got a good auction house setup for FIFA Ultimate Team... Electronic Arts! have outdone them there. Now I know Ultimate Team is on its second? third? iteration, but still... having good search options, and automatically sorting auctions by item type, time to auction ending... you create competition, people get a good idea of what something's worth, and the economy is streamlined.

Okay, need to ask- are all of your characters (even your SP characters) partly stored online? Can characters move from SP to MP to SP again, and use the auction house? (like Open Battle.net in D2). If so, I believe this "horrible DRM" is a response to the horrendous duping and item hacking that happened in D2. Gold was worthless, so items like Stones of Jordan and later runes became the unit of currency amongst traders, with especial emphasis on high level, desirable runes. Especially because of this, people endlessly duped especially valuable runes. If you're allowed to participate in online real money AH and even in game gold AH, and you could just dupe items on offline characters before hand, it would totally fuck up the economy of D3 (as it did to D2, artificial though it was).

There is no difference between SP characters and online, its the same character. You can just decide to go into a co-op group with others. Its all online based to prevent cheating/dupes.

  12. #762
    @Codex

    All characters are stored online.

They could have excluded offline characters from the auction house and not allowing to move them from off to online play, problem solved.

Could of but that would mean peoples face wouldnt be forced to the RMAH. And thats one of the reasons why its online based.

Cool that's what I thought. Do they have ladder and non-ladder players? Or just normal vs hardcore chars?

They could have excluded offline characters from the auction house and not allowing to move them from off to online play, problem solved.
Didn't somebody mention that they chose this intentionally in order to keep at least some information server side? I believe I read that in this very thread. Something about creating significant hurdles for hackers before they even try.

Anyway, it was a design decision. You might not like it, and indeed it is your right to complain. But it wasn't done out of spite, it wasn't done to protect their own wallets (AFAIK), so it can't be that bad.

My house in Bristol has the shitest internet. I get 300-500 ms ping to Cardiff when it's bad, and Cardiff is less than 50 miles away from here. So I know the pain of constant connection. So no D3 for a while at least.

My interpretation of those two statements is that they are contradictory.

Also, about all the trading - so what if gold is devalued? Why do we need a real money auction house anyway? The whole fun of dungeon crawlers is finding the loot yourself, simply buying it renders the experience (for me at least) pointless.

  16. #766
The advantages are the auction house, for one, that thing has been a huge part of my happiness with the game... The fact that I see every achievement a friend makes while I'm playing, they can jump in to my game whenever and I can jump into theirs, no previous coordination necessary... etc.

    ----------

Also note that at least one of the two other diablolikes being developed right now (Path of Exile) is also online only. I don't really see the problem with it. It's not a single player game that forces you to be online. It's an instanced online game that you happen to be able to solo in.

@Busby, for what it's worth this has seriously made me reconsider purchasing another Blizzard product ever again. It's not just the online DRM but the fact something about the game just seems hollow for lack of a better word. Diablo 2 felt like a labor of love but this feels like a money making scheme packaged as a game.

It also definitely feels slower than D2 to me which I don't like. Combat's half the speed I expected it to be.

Path of Exile was always marketted as an MMO Paladin. Diablo has always been about giving a fun SOLO and MP experience and Diablo 3 fails in the former, imo.

Whoa whoa whoa....Mokino, D3's Combat is slower then D2s? Crazy talk. D3s combat is so fast paced and satisying ill never be able to play D2 again. But I do agree that D3 feels hollow and is defo a money maker when the RMAH comes into play. Yet I somehow dont see 3rd party websites suffering all that much. I dont think Blizz do either, blizz just wants a piece of the pie.

Did you play Diablo II? I'm guessing not. Why is it bad for gold to devalued? Well, inflation isn't a bad thing in itself. Deflation is a bad thing. But for a currency to be worth nothing is absolute bullshit. They throw Gold at you in D2, and it's worth nothing. The vendors don't sell anything of worth (they could at the very least sell socketed items for rune words...), so the only gold sinks were mercenary deaths, gambling, and the occasional 90 gold for a scroll of town portal. It was bad because it was simply not worth the time to pick it up off the goddamn floor. For this very reason the end game devolved into people loading up tons of Magic Find gear, and farming the same old Durance of Hate level 2 waypoint. Yayyyyyyyyyyy

Making gold valuable makes it more of a choice- do I take magic find gear? Take moar damage? Gold find (which was pretty terribad in D2...)?

I surmise the main point about the auction house is so when you pick up an awesome piece of kit that says "Legendary: Demon Hunter only" you don't go SHIT ffs I don't have a level 40 Demon Hunter... in fact I don't have one at all!

There's so much gear in D3, to actually get lots of suitable gear drops is partly a matter of luck. For reference, my preference is to play single player (as I have done for all of D2), but I'd still want to benefit from the auction house so I can sell my non-useful gear for much better than the gold value that vendors offer.

    You're conflating different issues.

If gold - in a regular game - was worthless, then that is poor design, and the gold itself can be ignored. If they have fixed that with more interesting design decisions then great, that's groovy. But improving game-mechanics and decisions is not what we were talking about (which was online DRM).
If gold was worthless due to people trading duped gems etc. then that's an entirely different issue, but one you could opt out of by not entering into that market. If you were disappointed at gold being devalued due to this reason, then it's your own fault.

Which of those two is it?

    Edit:

On second thoughts, I see the connection you're making now. I think you're saying the in-game gold auction house is one of the solutions to that issue, but in order to do that properly would require DRM otherwise gold would simply be devalued globally. Hmm. Interesting. I'll have another think.

@DeafMute, it really does feel slower to me. Character movement is slower than running in D2 (but a bit faster than walking in that game) and enemies seem to have a lot more health than before. Maybe it changes at higher levels but I'm finding normal such a slog I'm not sure if I'll even finish. It feels slow on my wizard, monk and witch doctor so I don't think it's the class.

My main issue with D3 at this point, is replayability. I think that D2 had immense replayability. D3 does not. It's a weird choice by Blizzard to do this because on the one hand, you create the Auction House to cater to a replayable game. But they haven't made a replayable game. I was still playing D2 10 years after I bought it, not consistently mind you, but I really enjoyed it when I played it, trying different builds, building around a particular drop I got, etc. At this stage, there's no way that will be happening with D3...

  25. #775
Why it´s worth it? What advantages I get for the fact that they dont offer a seperate off-line mode?
A ton of Diablo 2's problems came from the fact that it was designed pretty much as a SP game. Pooled loot (e.g. whoever grabs it first gets it) alone made playing with randoms online damn near impossible. A part of the game's allure became item acquisition and trading, which flourished through half-assed trade channels, websites, and games advertised as trade games. People worked around the fact that you were very limited in what you could store on one character by creating mules.

These were all problems that were caused because Blizzard pretty much wasn't thinking too much about the MP portion of the game when they made Diablo 2...and yet, the game floruished -because- of the multiplayer component.

Diablo 3 was designed, from the ground up, as a multiplayer game. If they implemented an offline mode that made half of the game's features useless, it would be shitty and half-assed, unless they redesigned the game for single player. They want people to play MP (or at least participate in the Battle.net economy) because they think the game is better that way.

Think of it this way: Skyrim could very easily have had a MP component. It wouldn't be all that hard for Bethesda to create some basic networking component of the game and allow two people to join the same game. It wouldn't be completely trivial, but it could be done and it would "satisfy" the people clamoring for it. However, the game was in no way designed for it, and without redesigning a lot of important parts of the game, such an implementation would be half-assed and shitty.

Soloed Diablo in NM with my barb. Ironically, my auction house sword was eclipsed by a random rare drop with +170 vitality not an hour after I bought it. Mrfm.

I think there's someone out there buying up all the radiant gems as soon as they are put up for auction. I tried to sell radiant emeralds and they were gone in literally 3 seconds. I checked prices and it looks like squares are where the price of gems skyrockets in the AH, so I guess a bot is making money by buying radiants and turning them into squares.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

I've had to rely on the AH for weaps for my barb so far, as even now in act 2 of hell I've yet to find a single weapon drop that's decent.

Actually..that's pretty true for almost all my slots, unfortunately

Found enough crossbows/bows/quivers to equip an army of demon hunters though.

Incidentally it takes 3 seconds to rezz someone, and it's not broken when you stand somewhere like right under diablo's face.

Besides, Vanish in PvP is something you use while standing behind someone else to invoke another opening move, like say... cheap shot.

@Afoxi - That still leaves little room for error (which might be the point) but maybe extending the time to 6-8 seconds and increasing the radius so the rezzer can quickly position themselves would be a tad more useful.

  33. #783
So, item damage stats confuse me.

Clearly, the listed "damage" stat on your character sheet, and the DPS stat on the weapon, does not take into account +elemental damage. You can calculate the average damage per second as a weapon from just the base damage * attack speed, and it will always be equal to the listed DPS, even if there is + elemental damage that should theoretically affect it.

So, my question is, when is this applied? Does it factor into spell damage at all? Does it only factor into weapon attacks that actually use the weapon? Does it only apply to basic attacks?

  34. #784
    @Paladin & Demonic Spoon:

I understand the advantages for MP, but yet, for me Diablo was and still is a game i want to play in SP. It doesn´t make half the game´s feature useless, co-op and auction house are nice additions, still I don´t want them, I don´t need them, them missing doesn´t make the game half-assed.

They could have give people all the advantages you and others described and included an separate off-line mode. Just make it that way You can´t change Chars from off to online and the other way around. Suddenly all customers would be happy not just a part of them (even though it might be the bigger part, but how do you check who are in the minority here? )

    Edit:
660 HP seems very low. Im just level 22 with my and have 780hp.

though I deleted my edit. Realized that it´s not the hitpoints

I dunno why people don't like the story of Diablo III.

Act I is pretty good, especially parts about Leoric story, with Adria back, mentions of Lazarus and Butcher making an appearance I've got a lot of flashbacks to Diablo I.
Act II has some interesting controversy about Zoltan Kullle's intentions but they kinda overdid stuff with hanging platforms everywhere have no confined tomb feeling you had in Diablo II. And they've totally lost Egyptian vibe, that made Act II in previous game so great. Also Belial sucks as a boss. Give me back my beetles and mummies.
Act III is about battling army of hell and its commander and its execution and presentation is solid. I think it is inspired a lot with LoD opening cinematic. So epic battles with demons are to be had around Azmodan's war machines.

Rumour has it that the EU realm was taken down to fix an auction house bug allowing players to make money from failed transactions. Shouldn't be sardonic about this, yet it's oddly amusing when you remember fellows defending the always-on DRM claiming that it'll ensure a game free of dupes.
Of course, those who played D2 more than superficially learned that duping mainly happened by exploiting server weaknesses, at least one aspect where the successor is apparently faithful to the original
One step closer to the end of the decadent Eldar race.
[...] the reason we don’t like DRM solutions is because they punish the innocent and they have to jump through all these hoops. We don’t want to do that [...]

@Nalkor, I think that is the point. If it was as easy as invis - ress it would be a little broken.

I love the way your crafting skills and gold are all accessable from any character.

I really don't see the issue with the always online gameplay. If you are really that against it then the best way to protest is with your wallet.

god i love and hate inferno difficulty.
Love: it forces you to really min/max and try out many builds to find something that works. for my wizard i know of 3 distinct builds that all work but have drawbacks and advantages and play very differently (and rely on different itemization). it also forces you to play good and killing champion mob packs is very rewarding (in the sense of accomplishment and sometimes in the loot). it brings out a lot of depth in the skill system that you would not suspect on lower difficulties.

Hate: if forces you to grind because some things are just a gear, not a skill check, especially with the enrage timers. I also have to admit that melee classes have it really hard especially from act 2 onwards. act 1 can be farmed by any class though.

it also funny now how undergeared i was when i went from hell to inferno.

I have a one handed sword with +90 STR and +170 VIT (found it in A4 NM and it improved things immensely), and a shield with a radiant amethyst (RA). My armor is two slots with RA , pants two R Ruby, amulet/ring both + vit/+str with RA, and a ring with +dmg and resistance.

Basically, as much +vitality and +str as I can get. Towards the end of A4 NM I had to lean more towards vitality just to avoid getting killed in the blink of an eye. I have 18k life, and I die very fast even with 50%+ damage reduction thanks to my strenght.

I do 1700DPS before buffs. I had that up to 2100 at one point, but needed to back down in order to get more life.

    My skills are:

    1) Ground stomp with extra damage - necessary to survive packs
    2) Wrath of the berserker with +100%dmg - need it to kill champions/blue packs
    3) Ignore pain with 20% dmg back to life - need it to be alive at all for most of A4
    4) Call of the Ancients with extra duration - need it to kill champions/my "oh fuck" spell to buy me some time to escape

Fury on RMouse, Cleave/Hammer of the Ancients depending on situation for LMouse. Passive was the 3% life steal, nerves of steal and weapons master for the 15% extra sword damage.

I had to put both Berserker and Call into my active skill slots in order to survive the constant flow of gold/blue monsters in A3 and A4. I found that by the time I worked my way to the next deadly pack, the cooldown would be over and I could use them again. And without them, no way I would have gotten through A4. Ironically, killing Diablo was simply a matter of berserkering, ignoring pain, stomping when it came up, and then just sitting there with my fury attack. The bosses are so freaking weak in this game relative to the insanely powerful and deadly gold/blue monster packs.

My major failing point is that I don't have enough life leach. Just the 3% I get from the passive skill. The most I've ever seen on a weapon was 2%, which isn't a lot, and amethysts only give some crappy amount per hit. I'd need to hit 700 times to refill my health globe with a RA in my weapon, so it's basically worthless to me, even with fury hitting super fast. It looks like life steal isn't going to be as big a thing as it was in D2, and I'm really missing a perfect skull in my weapon

i often play with a barbarian so i can see their blight (in hell my wizard with his special skill and item combination was a better tank. i met many jealous barbarians who wondered how i can tank a ton of mobs without taking any damage) and just let me give you the hint the you do not need that much life leech in higher difficulties, your leech compared to their damage will never stack up*. what you need against champion packs from hell and definitely inferno is mobility to quickly get out of precarious places for example if there champions with arcane + frozen + some other abilities you need one or two mobility skills to get out quickly. while the monsters do a lot of damage the true difficulty comes from their abilities.

the game is considerably different from D2 in the sense that there are monster abilities that will kill you unless you avoid them, therefore mobility is key to dodge them. once you dodged it you can get right back in their face and continue hacking away.

*in inferno you will get hits for 5 -15 k hp while you own damage will be @ ~10k, so you would need something like ~50% life leech which is not attainable. secondly you need a lot of resistances armor and strength or else you will never survive to even do the damage you need in order to life leech.

% leech is sort of hard to make work, even at lower levels. Flat life on hit seems to be more effective in general. Level 60 weapons can theoretically have upwards of +300 life on hit as a weapon mod, and if such a weapon had two sockets you could theoretically push it to 1900 health per hit with two radiant star amethysts... If you were dual wielding, you'd be at 3800 life per hit, maybe add another 600 if you could manage to procure rings with 300 life on hit each, which if you were throwing AoE attacks out there could be significant even at Hell difficulty damage levels, but that's theorycraft on my part.

Yeah, I just don't have access to high enough level gems, yet. Since it looks like there simply won't ever be good % life steal, I guess I have to work on some other strategy for in-battle life recharge. My problem right now in Hell A1 is that even normal monsters can kill me if they get a good surround, and I can't kill them fast enough at my current damage levels. The old D2 way of tanking does look dead. Amethysts in armor are giving me +1k health per square, so that's a better investment than +30 health per hit.

Incidentally, at least up to squares, every gem is being sold at LEAST at a 50% discount in the AH compared to the crafting cost, usually a lot more. That little discovery netted me 7k life and 200 DPS (24k and 2100 respectively now).

So the on hit effect of the purple gems. will a monk 7 sided strike bring in 7x the heal back? what about 100 fists, per little piece of dmg that deals out, does that bring in the gem amount of heal per hit?
Or are monk combos dealt with in terms of gem heals in the 3 stages they happen? Hope I asked that right, confusing.

My impressions from what I've been reading- Crafting is really inefficient pre-Legendary. Thoughts?

What do people think of the Gold system? Are the Gold sinks balanced? Is it worth purchasing with stuff at vendors/ artisans (crafting?) rather than just going out and bashing into two hundred heads until you get a good drop?

On second thoughts, I see the connection you're making now. I think you're saying the in-game gold auction house is one of the solutions to that issue, but in order to do that properly would require DRM otherwise gold would simply be devalued globally. Hmm. Interesting. I'll have another think.
Yes! That's what I was saying! It's one thing when people dupe items for their own gain. Ostensibly one might think it doesn't affect you- but if the game is overloaded with pervasive legendary items, the global economy goes to shit.

Agreed. 660 HP is tiny-low. My Demon Hunter is level 20 and has around 1500 HP, and I didn't even intentionally build for massive hitpoints.

% life leech doesn't seem to me to be great for a tanky relatively low dps build. For example Assassin in D2 was amazing for % leech since the ratio of my dps vs my health was pretty low, unlike say a Paladin.

That they've reduced the % contributes, but is the ratio of your hp vs your damage higher than D2? Might go and check people's stats...

Per hit. 7 Sided Strike gives you 7x your per hit health return (And makes you invulnerable while it does it, it's a brilliant tool for healing if you're using massively stacked health on hit. Using the Several Sided Strike rune ups that to 9x. You get the health return for every blow that lands in the second combo stage of Hundred Fists, and if you're using Crippling Wave you get the health for every enemy you hit (Which can be a lot, especially on the third stage of the combo when you do a 360 degree kick). I think every tick of Sweeping Winds counts as well, which makes it even more fucking ridiculously overpowered than it already was, but yeah.

Oh, and everyone you hit when you use Cyclone Strike, which with the range doubling rune is insane.
