Diablo 3

  1. #801
I haven't exactly tested it exhaustively, but I can definitely see that I heal faster when I'm wailing on a whole slew of mobs than just one. And when I'm fighting just one guy, switching to Hundred Fists heals me faster, which is saying something since I'm giving up a 20% damage reduction when I use Hundred Fists.

Starfisher, any reason why you're not going for revenge, from my experience using it, it's great and from what I've been reading it's pretty much a must have for any Barbarian.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

Revenge with the vengeance is mine rune is an amazing skill for killing a slew of enemies while getting an insane amount of health back. It'll trigger plenty and getting 8% of your total health back per enemy hit has saved my barbarian more times than I can count. Whirlwind with weapons that gives health on hit works nicely too.

They could have give people all the advantages you and others described and included an separate off-line mode. Just make it that way You can´t change Chars from off to online and the other way around. Suddenly all customers would be happy not just a part of them (even though it might be the bigger part, but how do you check who are in the minority here? )
If you're a new player is starting up Diablo 3, you're probably going to hit single player...to "learn the game", as he probably assumes that playing online will drop him with other players immediately. He also won't know about all the mechanics that make playing with pubs in D3 tolerable (e.g. per-person loot). So, new person plays D3 for awhile and gets his SP character up.

Then he decides that he knows the game and might want to try MP. But...he's already invested so much time into his SP character, which can't do anything. So he says "Fuck it" and never bothers. He's then never introduced to the real game.

No good game designer ever would give multiple gamemodes, some of which suck. My Skyrim analogy holds - there are plenty of people who think they would be content with such a base MP implementation with no changes or consideration for the MP design, but they wouldn't. If Bethesda added it, then it would be expected to be a functional and complete part of the game in and of itself. If it was shitty and half-assed (as SP Diablo 3 would be) then people would bitch.

How do you expect to avoid that with D3? Have a big warning message pop up when you go to play SP that says: "WARNING: This game is not meant to be played SP. The SP blows compared to the MP, but we have this option in case you really really really really want it for some contrived reason".

By forcing everyone to login to Battle.net, everyone can still play alone if they really want and not use any of the community features, but they can -also- seamlessly jump in with others or use the AH without any loss of investment.

I'm currently playing a hardcore lvl 21 witch doctor (after a hardcore lvl 17 witch doctor, killed in a kind of ambushed quest) and found an act II quest called "Collapsing Vault" which is a timed quest.
The treasure seeker who described the quest told me that if I don't finish it fast enough, I would get the roof on my head and well ... die.

Do you think I just risked the life of my hardcore character ?

Lok, it took over two weeks for me to get a hacked WoW account restored and I suspect Bliz is dealing with a much higher volume of requests than at that time. You're going to need to be very patient.

Going through NM on my monk, currently 2k dps by the start of act4. Picked up 2 legendaries within act1 and act3, monk helm lvl 33 and a lvl 40-odd wiz legendary staff. Aside from suicide minions and some crazy uber champion packs its gone pretty smoothly. Lvl 50 atm, Havnt even touched co-op. All done solo as I am tired of being grouped with people with no mf, no gold find and no damage. Makes playing the game a chore.

I've found a decent build for soloing hell for my barb that I quite like,

    Ground stomp + pull in
threatening shout + grim harvest (tempted to change this to leap)
    +15% damage + marauders rage
ignore pain + ignorance is bliss

    LMB cleave+rupture
RMB hammer of the ancients + birthright

Using animosity, pound of flesh and weapon master.

Sometimes switch out threatening shout for Wrath of the Ancients if things are too hairy.

7.2k dps before using the 30% damage buff, 22k hp, lowest resist is 54 atm.

The only champion packs I've had problems with upto act 3 were a bunch of skeletons who herded me into a corner using frozen bombs.

Question, how do you get your DPS numbers? Is there somewhere it tells you? Or do you crunch it?

In your character sheet, below your stats (str, dex, vit, int etc) there's another box that shows damage and armour.

Came close once or twice but I made it in the end.

    Character

Monk is definitely the class who's main fighting style I like the most but I'm glad I played through for the story first with the Wizard as her dialogue was so much more interesting. Dito for the Scoundrel as my companion compared to the boring enchantress.

@Mokino - So, I heard the online only was to prevent hacks, dupes, and pirating. So far so good on that last one, but hacked accounts already? Damn, this is why people want an offline mode.

    ----------

I just tried buying things on the Auction House for the first time, and I gotta say - it sucks. If you make a bid on something, your money disappears immediately - which means that you can't update your bid afterwards if you don't have enough cash on-hand to pay more than double your original bid. That's pretty stupid; it would make much more sense to make it so you either can increase a bid without having to have the entire deposit on hand or, even better, the moment your bid is no longer winning it should be refunded directly to your account.

EDIT: Scratch that. It's even worse. You apparently have to pay in full for every single bid you make, no matter if you win or lose or if you're just updating your bid. If you don't win an auction, you lose your entire bid.

What the fuck kind of auction system is this shit? I just lost 16k bidding on something that I didn't even win. Blizzard should really make it clear that bids are nonrefundable and nonincreasable and you're fucked if you don't win with your original bid.

EDIT2: Nevermind. You have to go to the 'completed' section of the auction page and send your losing bid to your stash, which has got to be one of the stupider ideas I've ever heard. Still better than irredeemably losing that bid, though.

I wouldn't dare beta test the Auction House system. Langy it sounds like a bad experience even if you get your money back. Why have to send your losing bid to your stash????

Doomknight: While your argument has some merit, im not convinced that this is true. Most people making multiple characters anyway, so having to start again for mp doesn´t look like an issue to me.

Also stop suggesting, only MP is the "real thing". This is not Left 4 Dead, the game is clearly designed for both, if you play mp or sp is just a matter of taste. Also you don´t need to redesign to make SP working off-line, epxect maybe 1 thing: loot. What I noticed it get only crapp level 10-15 loot while i´m already level 25. Only through buying a rare wand for my wizard that suits my level I doubled my DPS. I assume this is done of purpose to get people to the auction house, but this totally kills the fun from looting aspect and also the immersion of the game. As I am tired of looking through stats wof crappy magic gear every 30 minutes when my inventory is full i just sell it and get what I need from the AH.

I have arranged with the on-line DRM anyway (what else to do, can´t get my money back,)but I still think it royally sucks. I even can´t play the game on my Laptop while travelling via Train (I do regular for my Job), but meh.

Will concentrate on the good aspects of the game, better for my health anyway, I don´t want to mutate to one of these insane ragetrolls on the Blizzards forum

Coming back to my point with the loot, get´s the loot drop better (better=you find usefull things more often than 2 or 3 times per act)? This is the one point really annoying me gameplay wise, because of above mentioned reasons.

Also Going Sith Style with the chain lightening with your wizard is so much fun (with the first upgrade rune that allows you to hit more targets at once).
I will use Google before I ask dumb questions!

Ha! So far the downtimes are always when I'm not planning to play. Greetings from work.

TWG, I'm also kinda disappointed by the loot. Following Paladin's advice, I kitted myself with rares on the AH for under 5K total. Stuff that I find is rarely even worth looking at before selling it. Too much useless junk, nothing actually worth keeping. It seems that the loot is poorly synced with character level - when I find a rare, it's usually 5-10 levels below mine, and thus I end up selling it on the AH and buying a more adequate rare from there.

My monks 52 now with 3k dmg. In act1 of hell need to upgrade all my equipment really. Elites arnt giving me to much hassle, Think I might start a wizard now. I also took a peak at the gems on the AH. Dunno how much they usually cost but I was buying raidents and squares for 500-1000g per stacks of 5. Until the price hiked up ofcourse =D. Definatly much cheaper buying them then it is to make them. Lets see how wiz is then try witch doctor. Then ill need to go back to my Barb, poor fella, hes pretty weak compared to my monk.

o.O Apparently, after the maintance, the Force Armor rune for the Wizard's Energy Armor stopped working whatsoever. It's the one that limited every single hit against you to 35% of your HP max. I know people have been using gimmicky low Vit high HP regen builds to tank anything that doesn't DoT with it, but apparently it's been comparable to DH's Smoke Screen, and if you did have a DoT cast on you, you died like instantly.

...so they just took the rune out entirely? WTF?

I was looking forward to using that rune with a more regular gearset, simply for surviving the hardest hits. Still very far from lvl 54 though, so I hope they figure something out and balance it until then.

[e:] On the other hand, after seeng Leoric's Manor I started to really love the game's looks. That location looks simply brilliant! Dark, gothic, nothing cartoonish about it. The art style reminds me more of aquarel paintings than cartoons.

  32. #832
You guys need to quit thinking of it as a "singleplayer game". It's a multiplayer game. You can solo it, but soloing a multiplayer game does not make it a singleplayer game.

There's no way they could ever change it to allow for offline play. It would require an immense effort, the game would have to be practically remade to take all of the server-side functionality and put it into the client.

So what happens when Blizz stop running the servers after huge player dropoff in a few years? Ok, blizzard might be able to afford it, but they're setting a precedent for always-online, and smaller or less dedicated companies will certainly not always be able to afford it. (eg. I wouldn't be able to play STALKER now if it was perma-connected)

You can solo it, but soloing a multiplayer game does not make it a singleplayer game.
Or: You can add co-op to singleplayer game, but that doesn't make it intrinsically and irrevocably multiplayer. - it's just singleplayer with knobs on.

Unfortunately all discussion about if one needs to see it as a multiplayer or singleplayer game or what side of the online only feature additions vs. terrible DRM conflict is right is irrelevant if it boils down to people not being able to play the game they payed for. I personally am all in favor of online functionality and am willing to take the risk of not being able to play if my side of the connection is somehow malfunctioning. But if you enforce an always online model your side of the service, server stability and capacity needs to be flawless. Especially if you are blizzard and this is not the first game of your service. like srsly.

What is this? I don't even...

...so they just took the rune out entirely? WTF?
I am more interested in seeing what they do about Critical Mass and AP on Crit gear. The Force Armor exploit has been predicted within the month of the runes being posted on the battle.net website, and this is the other big one - it's strong enough on its own by making crit gear simultaneously scaling your damage, resource generation, and cooldown management. And then, take a look at the fact that Hydras, Energy Twister can crit...

I just tried, for the lulz, take my measly 10% crit chance, combined it with Pinpoint Barrier and that Frost Nova rune, and suddenly I can face tank things with Healing Blades on Spectral Blade that previously murdered me in seconds of melee.

Apparently, the maintenance isn't over yet and any changes made might not be final.

I expect Force Armor damage reduction being changed to only calculate after the hit bypasses Diamond Skin, not before. Would be a sensible fix, IMO.

If its not single player then why Have I spent a massive amount of my 90+hours playing on my own? Co-Op is a gimmick to me as D3s been marketed to draw in the WoW retards and it shows.

  39. #839
No, it's just that it's not and never has been a singleplayer game in any way, shape, or form. The server generates the maps, it generates the loot, it calculates your damage, it tells the client when an enemy has been hurt, it tells the client when you have been hurt, it decides when things die. The client does very little except display pretty pictures for you.

That's not a description of a singleplayer game. That's a description of an MMO. And that's what D3 is, an entirely instanced MMO that you can only ever hang out with 3 other people at once on (Sort of like Phantasy Star Online, only without the central hubs where you could see a bunch of people you were never going to actually talk to). If you jump onto an online game and you play it by yourself, that doesn't somehow transform the basic design into a singleplayer game.

The only reason it's even an issue is that it's a sequel to two games that were not networked in this way. If people weren't assuming that it would function like the previous games, very few people would be bitching about it.

I'm not to bothered about changing password since I've the mobile authenticator, had that since it was introduced for WoW and my account hasn't been hacked, plus there is enough information on the net about people getting hacked without authenticators on there accounts, could have easily picked up the mobile one by now, even works on a ipad touch which is a fossil, tis how I use mine.

Incidentally, my wizard just hit lvl 52 and at 4k dps its a rather lul ride, working through hell, I don't like jailer + firechain+ arcane teleporters with a friend with shields nearby -.-

I can't imagine someone hacked into my account and stole all my gold, leaving me with exactly 0, but left me with all my gear and a ton of gems... Not to mention I've no idea where they would have snagged my email/password combination from.

I'm gonna wait and see what I have after the downtime is actually officially over. For all I know it's just a maintenance glitch.

I added the mobile authenticator anyway, just to be safe. Since I use android and it's free

Except that previous Diablo- games were not dependent on external servers sending out data packets to your client. Sure, you could play like that on battle.net, but you weren't restricted to it, as you could "host" your own game within your computer, or play within a local network.

I really don't see "being multiplayer" as a valid justification for removing those functionalities. Every iteration of Counter-Strike is a multiplayer game, yet all of them also offer Offline and LAN- modes.

In order to do inferno you need to farm inferno for gear.

I wonder who at blizzard designed that concept. White trashy mobs hit for 40k each... They're apparently higher level so they ignore all your armour and damage reductions.

You're just reiterating my point. You expect this game to be like the previous games, but it's a completely different design.

The reason you can't host locally is that they'd have to completely implement all of those server functions for your local client to run, and that would have probably doubled the development time.

  45. #845
Paladin, just because the data is supplied by servers rather than on your own PC doesn´t make it an MMO. You can do that for pure single player games too(as a DRM scheme). The game itself is what defines it´s genre, not how the game is brought on your screen. And the gamplay is the same as in the first 2 minus choice in character development (atributes and skill tree), plus some online features.

If you play D3 as single player, it feels like a SP game, looks likes a SP game and smells like a SP game, so it´s a SP game.

I think that explains it sufficiently. I'm convinced by it as well- you're not meant to rush through it, the whole thing is meant to be the end game. Meph running on Hell in D2 got stale.

I think you're over-estimating the difficulty of adding in local hosting. I would imagine that it's the very first thing you build up when creating a game, unless you decide very early on in your development to add in a persistent element (such as AH) that requires the game to be connected to a dedicated server, and specifically try to remove any capability to host locally for the sake of maintaining that persistent element.

If you decide you're going to make a multiplayer, networked game, you then have to choose whether to spend the resources to also implement an offline game or not. It really does just about double the time/cost of development if you choose to do so.

@Deafmute, If its not multiplayer game then why have I spent a massive amount of my 90+hours playing with other people? Single player is a gimmick to me and has been put in to appeal to people with no friends.

    See what I did there?

@TheWickedGerman, the key word being if. Co-op/online play does not feel bolted on at all. The looting has been thoughtout so you don't scramble to loot all the good gear before others, the npcs interact with all players, and there are persistant elements such as the AH which you cannot have without the online play. I think it is the persistant elements that stop diablo 3 from being a single player game.

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012...o-isnt-diablo/ That is why Diablo 3 being successful with online-only DRM is so fucking scary. The head guy at id Software says that every game should be online-only for convience, but the writer describes just how terrifying that is. It's not a very long read, and just to say it on top of others Paladin, Diablo games have always been both sinple-player and multi-player games, not just MP only.
