I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

Fancy that :P Another THQ fellow. I just hope we get a slightly more diverse marketing campaign this time around.. And not just "For the Motherland" A bit of axis care and attention would be nice...
So Ruined, can you sneak us some info on dow 2/dow3? We would be totally grateful and name our first born after you.
No qaurter back men, only forward or we will hold this line forever!!!

Row Row Row Fight the Powha
I would pay for them to add World Builder in first release, I would pay more for an actual modding studio. My biggest hope is they make mappacks and stuff as well and continue to support the game after the release with add-ons and stuff. I also hope they stick with SCAR so I don't have to learn another cpu language :S
This is GREAT news ! So happy to hear the CoH's franchise is continuing.
Really looking forward to see what they'll do to mix things up, like the units vaulting over cover thing already has me excited :P

hope it isnt like the change from dow1 to dow2.
back then they said mud, rain can bog down infantry/vehicles, lets see how true issit for snow.
other than that, im excited about the russians coming, IS-2s vs panthers and tigers together with swaths of infantry.
YES ! This was THE expected feature I really wish they'd had implemented, especially when the different weather options were introduced. Would make replaying maps very interesting.back then they said mud, rain can bog down infantry/vehicles, lets see how true issit for snow.

Well, I take it that no US nor Brit faction will be added on this sequel. But still a good news..although I'm quite satisfied with what Eastern Front offered.
Copy my image code if you want Japan in a CoH expansion!
BTW, fuck balancing. Give us the Japanese, Russians, Italians and French in CoH, pls awesome Relic team.
#60
Why would the brits or US be on the eastern front ? :P Only Germans and Russians, with a chance of Hungarians and Romanians in an expansion. Don't think we will be seeing the Foreign Waffen SS.
...we are going to see a bunch of germans in summer uniform in the freezing cold, and out of petrol... aren't we....?
I hope in Company of Heroes 2 will be a full LAN and will not be terrible GFWL.
#63
I'd say it would be steamworks like Dawn of War 2.I hope in Company of Heroes 2 will be a full LAN and will not be terrible GFWL.
#64
Rarely anyone uses GWFL anymore. It's just not worth the bother. And i am pretty sure CoH 2 will take that path.
@Yankow: Well we've yet to see any germans at all.. Communist propaganda i say !
#65
Steamworks isn't a better prospect though, if Retribution is anything to go by. Functional multiplayer would be nice for a change.
One step closer to the end of the decadent Eldar race.

There's always going to be some issue with Multiplayer. Trick is to find the least troublesome :P But who knows. They might go with an updated Relic online.
#67
If they keep their cheapass servers, game joining mechanism and stuff like that from CoH1, CoH2 multiplayer will be doomed.
#68
Like it currently is you mean ? :P And i said updated, thus implying (hopefully) Improved in several manners. But again. We've not really heard anything about multiplayer yet. All we have is a preview detailing parts of a singleplayer mission.
#69
True that, however I bet they will need to make Multiplayer more competitive and interesting, with a proper ranking system as well as a good updating interface and stuff like that.
#70
Define Proper ranking system. I mean it's not like one can create a custom game, press a little tab that says ranked without regard for anything else and then go from there :P Obviously the current one can be improved. But i wouldn't say it's improper. Nor exactly sure what you mean with "more competetive and interesting" How would it be more competetive ? How would it be more interesting ? In your mind that is.
That's not to say there are things i wouldn't love to see. Stuff like spectator slots so one could livecast a game. Improved metrics for when you're looking at replays, so i can see how long it is and what rank people are and so on. And improvements for the replays themselves would be spectacular. More metrics for starters, and not being forced to constantly have to switch between the two players so one can get a good overview of what is going on![]()

The problem I think with the current ranking system is that it's completely flawed.
One can rank up really easy when playing against higher levels, while I think ranking up needs to be a static amount of xp earned and something you can only get by playing a lot and getting better, as well as only 1 profile per account. These two things would eliminate the whole problem called smurfs, drophacks and stuff, as games would no longer be based just on getting the win no matter what, but actually how good you have played.
Another problem that I see is that the way games are setup is a bit flawed, except for automatch of course, but even that is bugged due to players having multiple profiles and stuff like that. In CoH it can take ages to setup a basic match, because of people ONLY joining games which they are sure of that they will win. I'm not sure what can be done to avoid this. With the word competitive I mean exactly that people generally aren't in for a challenge but just want to win, for that reason they only join games they are almost certain of they will win, and the ranking system promotes this. Besides all this, when you achieve Lv 16, it is nearly impossible to get a decent game this way, as nobody will join the game because they don't want to risk the loss they most likely will get, and this encourages such Lv 16 players to create a new profile because they don't get to play anymore.
I really think that it's quite stupid that you cannot acquire the top ranks (in CoH there are 20 for each faction), no matter what, except if you get extremely lucky and become one of the 10 top Lv 16's of that faction. Everyone should be able to get these ranks. The leaderboards would just show the top players at that moment. And this can be calculated by several things (streak, experience, activeness, win/loss ratio, etc).

Actually, i like the system where not everybody and his dog can get to the maximum level, but it works like a pyramid. A system where levels are linked to hard numbers like xp ( like BF:BC2's ranking system with its level 50 cap ) you do not really have any connection between individual skill and rank, it only measures how much time you were willing to spend "grinding" up XP.
The main problem i had back when i still played on the 2on2 Automatch Ladder was that about half of all matches were decided by someone crashing/dropping/deliberately drophacking. So it was a lottery of "if i play against high rankers, and one of them crashes, i climb up many ranking steps". Paired with a pretty big spread in skill levels ( it was rare to play with someone in one team of approximately my skill level, most of the time it was either a real good one that was pulling me with him, or a pretty bad one pulling me down) and some faction combo imballances ( Brits+Americans was considered a MUCH more dangerous enemy than 2x Brits or 2x Americans ) it became less and less competitive and much more a question of luck.
#73
@Celestial: Yeah. I don't quite see the logic in that. As Wargrim points out. It has no bearing on skill or rank. Just shows much much time you put into it. Never mind that once you hit the top. Why bother continue ? The other one, a more relative one is actually more competetive since there can only be one Numero uno for each army. And even that has to be fought for otherwise another takes your place. THAT is competition. What you suggest is more complacency as far as i can tell or well.. How would you judge how good one has played in a game ? I mean you seem to think that the game should somehow be able to tell that ? Or am i missing something ?
I'm definately in agreement on the no Multiple profiles thing though.
As for basic matches. Well that's always going to be a problem really. Only solution is to only allow automatch then. Otherwise there will ALWAYS be people trying to stack things in their favour, and people not getting a game and so on. And the only other way is to take away all indicators of how long one has played the game or skill. Meaning it all becomes one huge jumbled mess. So really, just encourage automatch i suppose. As for ranking.. Well if it is something people can just grind to. What meaning does it have if you're rank 20 or what ? I mean my apologies. But that just seems a bit vain.
@Wargrim: well that is the problem with 2v2 and teamgames and up. Things get a lot more complicated as more factors are thrown in.
As I see this, CoH 2 is going to be the free Eastern Front mod doctored up so that they want me to pay for it. It really sounds like a replay of CoHO. Unless this is going to be a completely separate game and not compatible with CoH then I'm not sure it will fly. Plus if it's another "Pay to Play for Free" nightmare I don't think I'll get involved.
Considering that this is a direct game sequel, I completely fail to see how you think this won't be a completely separate game. Also, the implementation of completely new engine physics like the snow mechanics outlined in the PCGamer magazine article point to it being much, much more than just new skins on top of CoH. And I don't think the Eastern Front mod will have voice acting and cinematics spanning an entire singleplayer campaign. As I see this, CoH 2 is going to be the free Eastern Front mod doctored up so that they want me to pay for it. i would say the ranking system, regardless of it being flawed, is perfect for this game. get into a game against a level 15 and u shit your balls. unlike in cod/bf3 where levels are tied to numbers and it just get grindy.
I hope there is DVD authentication online if you want to play rank multiplayer then DVD physical authentication if you want to play skirmish or SP the same as old COH principle.. please Relic/THQ don't be greedy..sorry i'm not fun of steam, origin etc...
Im pretty sure steam is basically a given if you still make PC games. theres just no point in using any other method of distribution anymore.
I would have to agree with the above statement, Steam would be preferable. I for one will not install another digital distribution software on my machine when Steam does it so well and offers amazing deals periodically.
#80
No. I really don't like the concept of steam at all. I want my games retail, not buying them on a server without actually owning them.
#81
I don't really care as long as i can buy a boxed edition to be honest. Which is most likely to happen. The time has not yet come where a publisher can make a major release solely via digital distribution. So let's not exactly imagine this is going to happen all of a sudden magically.
And if they are going to do a collector's edition. I hope it's a more neutral one and not a soviet branded one.. Or if it is. Then I want an Axis collector's edition :P
#82
So if they choose GfWL, people will complain, and if they choose Steamworks, people will complain?
As far as I am aware all games are effectively "rented" these days; your physical copy is only evidence that you bought a license to play said game's contents. Or something like that.
You might not like Steam, but it's one of the more effective anti-piracy measures out there (and it also comes with significant functionality beyond that). Some people also appreciate not having to keep 200 CD/DVD jewel cases lying around just to play their games
(I for one would be lost without Steam; flat was robbed a few months back and I lost virtually all of my games and DVDs. As such, my Steam library is what remains of my gaming collection)
I am an Iron Warrior! Iron Within, Iron Without!
#83
Never mind that for some people. They only buy games on steam since it actually allows them to buy a game where they otherwise might not be able to. Plus the steam cloud does also have it's benefits. And with millions and millions of people on steam. It would be a bit odd to ignore those. In particular when steam does offer a nice platform and features for publishers as well. Not to say it is without it's issues. From what i know you can't really deal with troublemakers and such as easily via Steam. Although they might have upped themselves a bit, there's the possibility of it still being sort of stagnant on that area.
#84
Like steam/dislike steam, I think we can all agree that if they use steamworks the functionality for the MP side will be significantly better then it was for CoH out of the box. Or have people forgotten the dark days of reliconline and having people like mukkel slave over a server for our sake!
Those who walk through the shadows, seek not the light.
If you disagree with a moderational decision, follow this.
#85
"Out of the box" wasn't RelicOnline, was it? Think that was one of the new features during the OF beta.
Certainly not as clear cut as that though. Vividly remembering CoH as quite picky with its NAT connectivity, but I also remember Steam disconnecting a random teammate (or me) per hour in Retribution.
Whether GfWL or Steamworks, the complaints will be justified, since those two just aren't suitable platforms for multiplayer RTS. If DoW2 achieved one thing, it was making this fact glaringly obvious. Would be beneficial for Relic to not sabotage the game's MP component with any of those, but both supposedly come with financial advantages, and THQ will probably care more about those than quality.
#86
sporty, your hyperbole doesn't help in getting your point across. What should Relic do, simply not have MP connectivity at all? Developing such a platform from the ground-up is an expensive time-consuming affair that they seem to have been unable to complete for any product other than CoH (and even that didn't function at all well).
Relic even made the relic downloader, which could have been avoided if it just used steam from the get go. Also i have a massive friends list on steam so it basically morphed itself into my one stop shop for my PC now. I always have steamopen even if i am not gaming, so i can keep in touch with all my buddys.
Also you would be nuts to miss out on those steam sales.
*pokes head back into forgotten waters*
So, I shat myself for several continual minutes after seeing this news revealed the other day. Dawn of War 2 was actually the first game I played competitively in any way, but I really, really loved CoH. Really looking forward to this, really bloody excited.
I'm conflicted. As much as I like the Eastern front, and as much as I realize that Relic will do an excellent job with the voice work, I'm worried based on what I've seen in the PC Gamer article that this is going to be "Enemy at the Gates the RTS." I've got this feeling in my bones that the basic Soviet infantry will contain various unarmed men. God help me.
#90
You're thinking of the mod :P And so far what they've got their hands on is the campaign. And in some cases. That actually happened. Sort of. But i think the Article was striving to relate to something most westerners might have seen. In that case. Enemy at the gates. Don't think a lot of their readership have seen Stalingrad for example
I just hope they will deliver us an awesome MP like CoH did (with its many flaws of course), and I can forgive them a cheesy campaign if it means more people lured (in their minds at least). It's not like the campaigns for the CoH and its expansions were realistically gritty and without a hefty amount of AMERICA FUCK YEAH moments.I'm conflicted. As much as I like the Eastern front, and as much as I realize that Relic will do an excellent job with the voice work, I'm worried based on what I've seen in the PC Gamer article that this is going to be "Enemy at the Gates the RTS." @Doomis. The Panzer Elite campaign really had a lot of that "american" in it :P Or the Tiger Ace.. or the falaise Pocket campaignSo how about we give Relic a bit of a chance before shooting them down completely ? We've only seen one preview. From one magazine. And trust me. Previews can really vary from magazine and site to site. Different details, different perspectives, different questions and so on. And some previewers are just downright daft.
#93
Yay! Essence 3, "true sight" and snow. Hopefully the game is as a beautiful to look at (relatively) as CoH1 was when it first came out. CoH1 literally had me giddy when I played the Beta those years ago and watching all the environmental destruction. It still looks good but it was a head and shoulders above everything at the time.
Call me simple but I like pretty things. :P
Relic Online was out of the box Sporty, Opposing Fronts just happened to bring Relic Online to the fore as a form of protection against piracy and the "multiple users playing using the same copy of the game" problem if I remember correctly.
In the event that Company of Heroes 2 uses Steamworks I have but one thing to say. Come on Relic\THQ you know you want to use the Steam Workshop to (potentially) have easier and quicker sharing and installation of custom maps. This is assuming we get a World Builder obviously.
One percent of the Blood Gods consume 99 percent of the blood and skulls. #OccupyTheSkullThrone

STEAM & GFWL: Malkael (Brother Malkael)
Oh don't get me wrong, this is exactly what I am saying. I don't really care for the campaigns, and if they are as well made as the original ones then I can definitely forgive their cheesiness (no matter if you are playing the 'good' or the 'bad' guys). If the gameplay mechanisms supporting the game are at the same or better quality as the mechanisms of the first CoH, then we will be talking about a great SP experience even if we have to go through all the stereotypes Hollywood has established about the Russian front.@Doomis. The Panzer Elite campaign really had a lot of that "american" in it :P Or the Tiger Ace.. or the falaise Pocket campaign So how about we give Relic a bit of a chance before shooting them down completely ? Essence engine 3 should be interesting, hope the games a hit and the germans wear winter uniform a la faces of war style.

Looks very good. We even get a tiny screenshot showing off some T-34/76 late variants and a Panzer IV. And what i think are German soldiers in greatcoats.
Otherwise it details co-op. New multiplayer modes. DLC and such.

Oh Gorb, mentioning hyperbole and then implying that GfWL and Steamworks are the only viable options for MP services in the next sentence? Come on
Not like I didn't give either of them the benefit of doubt, and why shouldn't we at least wish for improvements?
