Mechwarrior: Online [F2P Classic Mech-sim/Battletech]

    Mechwarrior: Online [F2P Classic Mech-sim/Battletech]

I know many of you probably already are familiar with this game, but for those who still haven't heard anything about it, Piranha Games have been developing the new Mechwarrior game (it's been almost a decade since Microsoft killed and buried the IP).

Newest IGN video preview showing the 'Mech lab and customization: http://www.ign.com/videos/2012/05/07...-video-preview

    GDC Gameplay trailer:

It's going to be free-to-play, using Cryengine 3, have 12 'mechs at launch, be your classic simulation genre, 'mech lab, C-bills, and so on. It's coming this summer. So far it's only Inner Sphere 'mechs, but the timeline starts in 3049, meaning that a year from now the Clans will invade (there is a 1:1 relationship between in-game dates and actual dates).

For those wanting a more comprehensive summary, I'm just going to quote Orayn from Neogaf, because it's easier:
MechWarrior Online is an upcoming massively multiplayer simulation game developed by Piranha Games, and distributed by Infinite Game Publishing. Set in FASA's venerable BattleTech universe, MWO will put players in the role of the eponymous giant robot pilots, allowing them to re-enact battles involving the houses of the Inner Sphere and mercenary corps, both player-made and canonical. The game is set just before the Clan Invasion in the year 3049, and is not a continuity reboot, but a modernized re-telling of the established timeline.

SOUNDS NIFTY! WHAT DOES IT PLAY LIKE?
    • We've been repeatedly assured by Piranha Games that MechWarrior Online is a simulator first, and an action game second.
    • The battles are purposefully paced but brutal, and you'll have to coordinate with your lance, exploit your enemies' weaknesses, and think on your feet to succeed.
    • The basic gametype consists of three lances (groups of four BattleMechs) pitted against each other on large maps. The battle ends when a team is completely wiped out, or when one team captures the other's base, whichever comes first.
    • Actual 'Mech warfare is a combination of classic MechWarrior games, faithful depictions of BattleTech canon from the tabletop game and novels, in addition to some newly introduced elements.
    • 'Mechs come in all shapes and sizes, from 20 ton Light 'Mechs that specialize in scouting and evading enemy fire, to the 100+ ton Assault class decked out with weapons and heavy armor.
    • Players have a pilot skill tree that allows them to unlock modules that can modify the performance of any 'Mech, and can also progress through a skill tree to improve the performance of each 'Mech and 'Mech variant they pilot.
    • MWO will include full support for joysticks, throttles, pedals, and gamepads, as well as a default control scheme optimized for keyboard and mouse.
    • There is confirmation of a MechLab, though the degree to which each model can be customized has not yet been disclosed.
    • MWO is powered by CryEngine 3, so expect eye-pleasing visuals and respectable performance on modern machines.

HOW MUCH DOES THIS THING COST?

MechWarrior Online is free to play! A niche franchise like MechWarrior needs all the exposure it can get, so having absolutely no barrier to entry ensures that everyone has a chance to at least give the game a try. If you're worried about "pay2win" shenanigans, rest assured that Piranha Games will only be offering convenience features and cosmetics, and will not sell anything that could grant paying players an unfair advantage in battle.

FREE TO PLAY? "RE-IMAGINING?" IS THIS IS GOING TO BE A CRAPPY GENERIC ACTION GAME WITH GIANT ROBOTS TACKED ON?

Absolutely not! The senior staff at Piranha Games include a number of long-time fans of MechWarrior. Randall Bills, who served as continuity editor for dozens of products set in the BattleTech universe, is also on board to ensure that everything conforms to standards. What we've seen and heard of the game so far has actually been more faithful to canon than MechWarrior 4!

    WHEN CAN I START?!

    WHERE CAN I LEARN MORE?

Piranha Games' own site for MWO is a great resource, with media, forums, game info, and registration for the beta. Be sure to check out the official Facebook page and Twitter as well.

    WHAT IS THIS THREAD FOR?

The official MechWarrior Online site updates with in-universe news daily, and with info on the game weekly - The mundane stuff will be linked and summarized here by yours truly. As the "information" part of the title implies, this thread is also the place to go if anyone wants to ask questions, speculate about the game, or just chatter about the giant walking death machines we all love so very much.

Huh, they haven't announced the Archer yet. Cool to see it. Also, IGN has some more videos up of gameplay and the mechlab:

Er no, that's my being silly, I was looking at the Dragon and in my tired state assumed it was the Archer. Looking closer though it is defiantly the Dragon.

Apparently there's also a new Heavy 'mech walkthrough, which kind of touches upon the role warfare stuff they've been talking about http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2EZZ7Rf8ug

@ UberJumper: You should check out the rest of Flying Debris' concept arts for all the mechs @ http://mwomercs.com/media/artwork/1-battlemechs
He also has some great stuff on his deviantart (and the licensed stuff he has done for Catalyst Game Labs).

Apparently IGN is slowly trickling out previews, so here are the other 'Mech classes:

    • Assault: PPC sighted and it looks like arm-mounted weapons are able to follow the mouse, while torso equipped weapons only follow the rotation. Pretty cool, imo.
    • Medium
    • Light

  14. Child's Play Donor  #14
After watching trough the IGN videos I'm really disappointed in how much information they give... (Incoming rant, sorry)

The reason why Assault mechs are not so super useful vs other weights is the fact that they have extremely limited mobility meaning they are _easy_ targets.

The whole notion of Medium and Light mechs damage output hopefully is not like it was in Mechwarrior games online battles where by sacrificing armor/mobility/heat management you could(and still can) gain more firepower in terms of bursts and accurate pilots were extremely good at potshotting torsos from long ranges while keeping their momentum up.

Feels a bit funny how they tell all sorts of things about the game but not the actual logic of Mechwarrior balances that much.

That being said. Curse you friends and family beta! I want to play! It looks so absolutely good, just wish the information was a bit better (In terms of giving an egual thinking grounds to new players and old players how things work). I can't wait to get my paws on a Puma and go hunting again!

Also, no lock on system for LRM? Aww.

I wonder if this game will kill WoT. They are sure miles ahead in terms of game engine.

Sohtaraz, I would rather have relatively overpowerd mediums and lights rather then being a landpig-fest like MW:4 was. Its more interesting when everyone is manoeuvring around rather then simply walking at each other and firing 4+ PPCs and Gauss rifles.

MW:O is set a few months prior to the Clan invasion. So no Timberwolf or Mad Dog or Adder.

Yeah I was just doing some reading, with the game time being equal to that of real time so 1 day = 1 day in game they'll probs start adding Clan stuff in a year or so after release when the Clans start to make an appearence in the timeline.

I couldn't stand MW4: Merc online with all the PPC sniping and all that. It felt like if you didn't have an optimal build, you hardly stood a chance.

Unless the whole point of the game was to find an optimal build and be a darn good sniper. I thought straight-out slugfests were more fun and dramatic.

After some research. After some drool caused water damage I have come to the conclusion that...

    I want it. Now.

This is the game that I am waiting for this year and if its anything like the mechwarrior 4 online play (With proper filtering on options to make it... Tabletop sense balance, not a ppc sniping race) I will be happy. And I do hope they keep the assault mechs center torso huge like they should be. It's their main penalty when it comes to armoring.

Also good news is the critical hotspot location that means that different variant mechs will have actual proper weaponry and you don't have to guess as much what they are packing when you can see "Oh this catapult has no missile racks. I smell energy weapon ionization in the wind".

(For those who don't know, Critical slots mean in order you to equip a weapon.. Lets call it [Medium Laser] to slot [L-Torso] you need to have [Energy weapons 0/2] (No idea of the slots required per weapon... Just an example) in order to put it along with the usual tonnage and over all slot space...)

Also there is a thread with all the weapons and eguipment http://mwomercs.com/forums/topic/783...devs-1-answer/ ....

Also developer blogs for more information http://mwomercs.com/forums/forum/64-dev-blogs/

Just for clarity's sake, I know most people know this stuff already, but I don't want anyone getting disappointed: this is not an MMO as typically labelled by the industry. Matches will only be 12 vs 12 instances, there is no large free-roam overworld, or hubs with hundreds of players walking around talking to quest givers. It does have a persistent campaign map, and you get a persistent character with RPG-levelling elements, though.

Given the differences in how the game plays out, I'm not sure this would really count as an MMO, but it doesn't really matter. I just want any other boardies reading this thread learning about the game for the first time not to get confused and think this is going to be robo-WoW or something.

PS. my most anticipated game of 2012, no lie
Look at the bright side, kid - you get to keep all the money.

Yes I know, I meant MMO as in msomething multiplayer online. I don't really care what type of game it is, if it's free, online and multiplayer it's an MMO to me :3

Googling an available mech list (I hope there's one).

Edit: Oh, the Raven is already in the game. Amazing

This looks like the perfect game, it's WoT but with more customization and with mechs!

Here's hoping they follow a similar formula but with more awesome and less grind

Again, awesomely looking art and screenies, can't come soon enough

I know it's only team versus right now, but I'd like some sort of coop missions in the future. Something short and slightly randomized like Global Agenda's Spec Ops.

  31. #31
Wow I'm pretty sure I will be dropping World Of Tanks for this. I have really been waiting for a new game where tactics and skill set is what decides battles instead of "I've played the game for a year and have unlocked everything" The fact that it is Mechwarrior makes it pure win for me.
It's Warhammer. Fuck common sense, the universe is built on awesome. Headshotting aliens from long range with a pistol is fucking badass hence its presence in the game.

If it has coop missions and PvP is not seriously unbalanced by virtue of people having played a long time (skill aside), it's gonna be a sure-play for me...

Lautaro, I friggin hope so, little scouts are my Mechs of choice in MWLL, and seeing as we have a Raven now...

That being said, I think the most fun for scouting is probably going to be playing as a forward observer for LRM Cats. Bring the rain.

That's a different story. It's well within the timeline, but because it is Reseen (formerly Unseen), the devs might stay away from them. There's no particular reason why they should since the Reseen were all legally licensed from their Japanese copyright owners, but Piranha Games might "play it safe," as it were.

Which brings up the question of those Mechs still Unseen (redesigned in the Project Phoenix TRO, a few of them quite hideously so): if flyingdebris reimagines the old 80s copyright-infringing designs the way he has all the other Mechs they've revealed (as a second "Project Phoenix," if you will), would they be considered different enough to avoid a legal battle?

Cause I have to say, after the Bushwacker, the Warhammer is my favourite Mech, and nothing would make me happier than to see it ingame, kicking ass again, like it was always meant to. As an avowed light scout/medium brawler pilot, I'd probably seldom use it myself, but I'd be very happy to have one watching my back.

I'm not sure what your post is meant to accomplish, Fish. The confirmed ingame Mechs are the ones on the MWO art page, the Sarna editors add them to the wiki's list when their artwork is posted on mwomercs. What is the point of posting both links?

EDIT: I just realised it's probably so people can easily find their articles on Sarna, derp. I have Sarna bookmarked, so I guess my obsessive brain couldn't immediately process the thought that other people wouldn't have it bookmarked. Sorry
