Would you buy a remake?

Would you buy a remake?

Let's imagine Relic goes and remakes H1 from scratch, with a new game engine. Would you purchace a remade Homeworld 1 ? Could it even be successful enough to restart the whole IP?

At $20 I certainly would, and with Steam-like mediums we might get even more newbies to cry for Kharak What do you think?

It COULD work, and I ephesise on the could

as long as its ONLY the engine, and nothing else, then it would be perfect for re release

and yea I would totally buy as long as its 25 or less(since I have the game already)

If they're going to put the effort into a remake they might as well make a proper hw3. I'd be pissed if all we got was a graphics update for $25.

5. #5
Update? hw1 updates itself everytime u get a better graph card. Hw3 ftw! why go to all the trouble of buiding a new engine without a new game to go with it? Tho preferably something that has more in common with hw1 than 2.

6. #6
Well, I was thinking a remade Hw1 would bring more people to the franchise and help pay for Hw3. And I wouldnt mind one bit if Relic would decide to retcon hw2.

*hopeful thinking*

nope!... i won't pay for a HD remaster of HW1...

for me, HW1 is alive with it's 1999 level graphics... that's kind of it's character for me..!

if there is going to be a new engine and new efforts... then i would want a HW3 with a new story.

Unless preview materials gave me reason not to, I'd pay full modern blockbuster game price for it.

I'd pay just to support the HW family but I'd rather have something new. As somebody said, it lives on 1999 Pixel graphix.
If I wanted new stuff, I'd play Eve Online.

lol sparki even ad new in the same sentence? :P even with the v3 update and new missile effects it still needs a lot of work. but i would pay for an engine update. not a lot but some. would be better if it was a homeworld 3 engine and included in the price they gave you and engine updated hw 1.

A remake is good by why not make it MMO also? Or maybe not a remake but an MMO version of HW. I mean ... come on... Eve has a monopoly over the space MMO... why not HW step up and fill the void left behind by the now defunct Jumpgate?

Can you imagine the success ?

My vision would be: People being able to fly shuttles to dock with an Ion Frigate and board it then walk to the bridge etc as if it were a FPS.

But thats just me. More likely if Relic were to do this they stick to the ship focus interface like in EVE and you can upgrade your engines in your Ion Frigate, and you can own a fleet even. In which case it becomes like a normal HW gamce but each player can be like an Admiral.

Hmm I don't know.

How about a homeworld 3 collectors edition. With remade 1 on new engine. Assuming offcourse that gameplay is similar.

15. #15
I would happily buy any RTS related to homeworld. I admit, a HW1 with a new engine, remastered music, and awesome theatrical CG cut-scenes would be amazing.

In fact, I would argue this is the safest bet for Relic. I would gladly pay the full $50-60 for a simple remake. Relic could do *something* for the fanbase, and pull in new fans.

As much as I want to see HW3, a remake would do more for the franchise imo.

A graphical update? Sure, I'd buy it.

An actual reboot, re-imagining the universe and gameplay as if the game were made today while keeping the core elements that made the original special? Hell, I'd be all over that.

Is there any reason to believe we'll be getting such a thing? because I've seen posts like these 50,000 times on this board, and I don't see any real change as of yet >.> Relic isn't in a position for a AAA title, even if it is familiar ground (assuming there is at least one original member of the dev team still there).

I wouldn't go for a Homeworld MMO. When Warcraft 3 became World of Warcraft the transition felt rather jarring from one select group of heroes (the player force) to an everyman band of zealot buff-tastic players being the first to be "this tall" to take the ride that advanced the major plot points. I wouldn't want Homeworld going the same way.

The more I think about it the more I think Homeworld can't have the same magic it did without being in the hands of Rob C and his creative team. Now they're doing something else. Homeworld sleeps and will remain a dream until that team or their chosen successors return to it.

I'd call the Dawn of War and Company of Heroes games AAA titles myself, but it is true that THQ is in a bit of a tumble right now. A lot is going to be banking on CoH2 and how well it does at this point. That said, Relic has expressed interest in revisiting HW in the past.

As for whether anybody from the original team is still with Relic? I think a few are, but not many admittedly. That has been the case more or less since HW2 though and I don't think it's a necessity. After all, HWC was perfectly decent (IMO) but it was made by an entirely different studio (albeit with some help from Relic).

I have nothing against MMOs personally but I don't think it's a good fit for Homeworld. Most MMOs crash and burn rather swiftly unless they're able to build up a massive player base quickly and I don't think Relic is a big enough name or that Homeworld has enough appeal for that to be possible. More to the point, I don't think there's ever been a successful MMORTS (as I recall, Company of Heroes Online died a rather ignoble death), so for something that's already going to be a bit eccentric (3D space RTS), adding another risky factor isn't a good idea.

I think that's a bit pessimistic. There's several examples of franchises successfully revisited and resurrected years after they faded away (Fallout is one recent example). It's true that any resurrection would almost certainly be different in some way from the original, but I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. Audiences and times change, after all, and successful franchises change with them.

Granted, there are a few things I consider sacrosanct in Homeworld and would be distressed to see change, like 3D movement or the aesthetic, since those are part of what make Homeworld what it is. But I'd be alright with seeing a few changes or even several, if it helps make the game successful. After all, even HW1, HWC, and HW2 all have significant differences from one another.

The worst thing, I think, for the franchise would be for it to become ossified and for Relic to avoid ever revisiting it for fear of a backlash if they change anything.

Remake is very delicate topic nowadays.

It be best to leave the classic as it is and expand the universe by new ideas (of course, tuning it well to its predecessors).

HW1 has enough material to be compiled to an interactive movie/intro. A creative writer and animation staff could build something out of it as a basis for the new stuff. The IP itself offers a lot of free room for ideas.

I disregard Remakes nowadays. There is a thin line between success and fail, as many examples of today show - Failed attempts often feature the first mistake of not keeping it true with oldschool.
On the other hand, the upcoming UFO/XCOM remake game is doing it right after 2KGAMES finally came to their senses (Promises at least a lot of awesome stuff). If any HW remake or HW3 kept true with the oldschool, then it would be good to go.

I wouldn't go for a Homeworld MMO.
MMORPGs unfortunately got a bad reputation with WoW.
I think it is too harsh to say that a HW MMO would be just like WoW; Of course, if a company hires tons of designers who model after WoW, that would suck. But we must keep it true here that the game would likely be an Eve Online game.

However, a HW MMO doesn't have to be that complex or full of PvP aspects. Likewise, the wave of free2play offers enough leeway for "simpler games". If you ask me, HW just need some advertisement as well as a single small sandbox for now.

But dropping all that, the great thing with HW is that one can do many things with it.

There is Kickstarter of course, where small projects can get funded and be brought back to life.

Homeworld is a singleplayer game. It's always been about the story. MMOs are not. I'd buy a remake of HW1. I wouldn't buy an MMO. Especially not one with a monthly fee, which is what kept me away from EVE.

23. #23
I would buy the remake also, hopefully there are extra missions even the remake of HW1 expansion. HW MMO don't be silly. It won't work. They did however tried a CoH MMO and they closed it down.

I'd buy a remake, but I deem it unnecessary. What I want to see is the original game(s) widely available for purchase again for anyone who's interested in them via download service, optimally (and if we're honest even more unrealistically) made to run on a newer system and with a working online multiplayer service.

Yes. (double yes if it comes with a Karan Sjet poster)

Now I've just awakened from cyro sleep so forgive me... where are we on the legal issues surrounding the HW IP and franchise? Sierra still own it?

Yes, it could be a good idea to make HW1 again on a new HW3 engine . Just like Toy Story was re-rendered in 3D before the premiere of Toy Story 3.
