    Introduction

Most of you probably remember me from my previous mod, Reincarnate , or as the AI guy. Well I have decided to return to the modding scene, as now I have finished with University for the time being. Although this mod is basically still Reincarnate, I wanted to start a new, hence the new mod name. I feel Armageddon is an appropriate name , as with Dawn of War 3 probably not too far in the distant future, we are slowly coming to the end of Dawn of war 2, and I want to end it well. I decided to a different approach to how the mod will play, and hopefully you guys will approve of it.

    About the Mod

This mod aims to keep the fast paced action and tactical fighting that vanilla gave us, but make all of that bigger and better and introduce some new concepts and new content. First of all the races have been made to be more "fluffy", so they act more how you would expect them in the lore. This was no easy task, as balance is a huge part of the mod, and it took a while to get all the races feeling fluffy but not OP or UP. Lots of units have been tweaked , way too many changes to do a bullet list, but every unit in the mod now has a meaningful purpose, even late game. Resources has been looked at as well, with a greatly increase rate of it coupled with double pop cap, you can expect bigger and better battles, while still not feeling too overwhelming that you can't manage all your units. Upkeep cost is still included for balance reasons, and now, power upkeep has been added to vehicles, so the more you have, the less power you will get meaning you won't be able to chuck out tanks as easily as before(you also only get up to 4 now).

    Adratus's AI(AAI)

Yep, AAI is still implemented , and it's now better than ever! I have spent a while now working on the AI, and these days, they rock. You can expect them:

    - Build multiple unit types, depending on what the enemy have built(if you mass tanks, they will build counters).

    - Defend key positions on the map.

    - Actually be aggressive and push forward all the way to your base.

    - Play smart and attack in numbers.

    - Far less just running around map and capping points(yay!).

    - Be and overall far greater challenge than in vanilla.

AAI is always an ongoing project, it will never be perfect, but it can only get better and better with community feedback.

    General changes

    - Superior AI

    - Increased resource rate( though power should feel rarer than in vanilla)

    - 200 pop cap for each race

    - 4 vehicle hard cap for each race

    - HQ health reduced to 6000

    - Quick start resources is now 2000 req and 400 power, as apposed to the old 9000 of each.

    - 250 victory point selection is now 99999(infinite) this will allow for essentially FFA annihilation.

    - Super units now cost and additional 200 red resource

    - Units are now "As seen". Meaning for example, a space marine in a tactical squad will have the same stats as a space marine in a devastator squad.

    - All walkers health decreased.

    - Lots and lots and lots unit changes, way to many to remember all of them, hopefully most of them will be noted in race changes.

    Race changes

This is still ongoing, there is quite a lot lol, also I will have most likely missed out some changes, due to not remembering :P..

    Space Marines

Scout sniper damage decreased, but squad now receives 4 instead of one.

Tactical marines buffed up, health and damage increase, increased squad cost, sergeant upgrade cost increased.

Devastator stats match tactical marines, squad size reduced to 2, increased squad cost.

Assault marine squad health increased, sergeant upgrade cost increased, power axe upgrade added, increased squad cost.

    Predator lascannon AOE decreased.

    Terminators build-able at HQ.

Added in Honor guard Squad, tier 3 heavy melee unit, also acts as support for infantry with abilities.

A release is very soon, so stay tuned folks.

    Nice project man

As I'm a coder too, I wonder if you could help me with AI codes, because this is a real mess for me... Or at least, if you can show me your code so I can understand it and modify my own code... Because for my mod (look at my signature), I don't need a complicated AI, but it has to produce troops and attack, and I can't even get it to do that !
    [Dow2] Zone Control
Once again, sorry for my poor english .. ;)

  3. #3
Well I use copes mod tool to deal with the AI, I mean I could go through the wall of code without that tool, but come on....effort :P. I believe what you are trying to do will be very difficult due to the fact you are pretty much making a whole new game, where as what I do is alter the behavior with the current game settings. For example, I am not 100% sure how to you could make the AI build form the bunker as appose to the HQ building, I would have to download your mod and see for myself what you are trying to do for a better understanding.

I tried to mod the AI with copes tool, but without any success... I got it more aggressive, but for the other things, nothing changed... Ok, I think I'll have to spend some nights with scardoc as a pillow
I'll release soon a beta version, I just need to implement some abilities and maps.

    @ Hollow

Leaving the DOW 1 scene for 2.....how could you :P.Thanks for the offer, I would wait till I release a public version first before you are willing to offer( you may hate it :P).

    @ Dharkahr

I see, well, you do have a very amphibious project, I hope it all goes well for you.

Oi, Adratus! Welcome back to Da Big Slog()

Anyways, if you and Hollow were to produce a mod... Marvelous is all I'd have to say.

How come you decided to ditch Reincarnate (was a good mod if you ask me)?

  9. #9
Well I didn't ditch Reincarnate, as this is still Reincarnate technically, just thought I would start a new,as well I want to take a slight different approach to the mod. I might release the mod tonight or tomorrow, as I am running out of things to do with it without community feedback lol.

Claw: Well, the increased pop cap, improved balancing and greatly improved AI to name a few.

I only just reinstalled Retribution out of missing it and I stumble onto this mod.. what a great homecoming!

    See you on the field

Im loving it at the moment, its basically to me a much more refined version of Reincarnate, the AI are a good challenge as well, Iv actually down-scaled to hard CPU because the experts keep trashing my allies across the screen :O

Overall though, great job, Iv lost many hours on FFA

Do not think(even for a moment lol) that I am dissing your work. Because I am not. If you want to know what I think, well, I think that what was Hollow to DoW 1, you are to DoW 2. Pretty pivotal if you ask me.

Keep up the good work !

  16. #16
Thanks a lot, I will be working on it further.......right after Civilization leaves my life alone :P.

Interesting, gave it a couple of games. Some thoughts about the AI:

1.) It seems like the AI in general doesn't like adding squad leaders? I'm not too sure if I saw guardsmen squads with sergeants, but I haven't seen other squads with any form of squad leader. This has always been the case with the vanilla AI, so is it fixable?

2.) I noticed that the AI now groups its units together, instead of sending them on independent capping missions. This is good.

3.) It seems the AI gets a resource boost? My Hard AI ally got more requisition and power than I (by a few thousand units). Is Normal difficulty the only resource-balanced AI opponent now?

Apart from that, so far so good. Some spelling errors in the Space Marine Honour Guard descriptions (eg 'weild'). I found the requisition rate to be a little high (too much req to use and so little power?), I'm not too sure if this means we're expected to get a lot of T1 units that have no power cost throughout the game to balance this. I think reducing the rate might be a little better as well.

On another note, would you be releasing a mod with just the AI improvements, like your previous AI mod?

    1) Back in the days of reincarnate, it was decided to give Guardsman squads Sergeants by default so the AI stands half a chance with using them (The AI won't upgrade the pathetically weak 6 man Guardsman squad and they get slaughtered straight away due to lack of numbers), Im fairly sure its next to impossible to get the AI to add squad leaders to troops.

    2) Indeed, its especially fun against an expert ork AI, you get absolutely swarmed

    3) Not too sure here, I would imagine its similar to company of heroes, where on hard they get a resource boost, and on expert they get an even bigger resource boost and a slight increase to their units durability.

Could be wrong on the unit health though.

    1) I have no idea how to get the AI to add squad leaders, relic seemed not to bothered about that, why I have no idea.

    2)Thanks

    3) Yes , even standard receive a slight resource boost, otherwise too easy.

    4) Players are meant to have way more requisition than power, this is too stop spamming of the more powerful units and tanks.

    5) I will probably release a standalone AAI mod for vanilla in the future.

Maybe Im not playing right or just holding back, I always seem to have huge numbers of requisition yet seem to be managing with the troops I already have.

Certainly comes in handy when your Guard get swarmed by those bloody swarmlords though... I swear they are unbalanced, nothing takes them down fast.

  21. #21
No sounds like you are playing it right, and a good counter for swarm lord is an ogryn squad for distraction, then mass firepower.

Ah, thanks, I never ever get Ogryn squads, but that makes sense

  23. #23
Gonna prolly get my ass kicked at first but hell yeah, your AAI always are a challange
Now you see, Here at the Imperium of Man. We only use, propane fueled Promethium. Thats a flame burning heretic i tell you Hwat!

  24. #24
Yeah, your AAI does not mess around at all. they pose a rather nice challenge. My honor guards axes still dont show, but it doesnt really matter. Great job with the AI

  25. #25
Very nice mod, love the AI in it. Although I don't like some of the other things (4 vehicle hard cap for each race, higher resource rate, etc)
So I was wondering if you could somehow give me a download link with only the better AI in it? (if that makes any sense, not sure how hard that would be or if you would even have any time to do it)
    Thanks in advance.

  26. #26
I will look at releasing a standalone AAI mod soonish, just got stuff going on atm in real life, hence the absence.

  27. #27
Alright, no rush or anything. Just let me know whenever you release it.

  28. #28
Hopefully will start work on this again soon, and the standalone AAI mod, maybe in the next few days.

  29. #29
Is anyone able to download the .zip file from gamefront atm? Every time I try, I keep getting a file not found error:

"You may as well try to catch starlight as bring the Eldar to battle."

  31. #31
When I use the download link I get a file not found error, too. I really hate it when gamefront takes down files. I really liked the AAI 2.0.0 and was looking forward to the updated AI and new gameplay / units in this mod. I could not find any alternate mirrors. Any other AI mods out there that compares to AAI?

Sweet, Thanks! It helped a lot !

  34. #34
Wow, amazed people still play this mod haha. I kinda thought the DOW 2 modding community had died.

  35. #35
hehehe, yeah things are relatively quiet. But this mod is still awesome. Interest in a good AI skirmish mod will last long since you don't need a community to be alive to enjoy good AI skirmishes, and because out of the box, DoW II's unmodded AI just isn't that good. Thank you so much, by the way, for your work on this mod :-) .

  36. #36
Yeah, the AI mods will the best type of mods and maintain longevity of the game beyond any other types. And more gamers with more experience with getting into communities later after buying a game like this on sale will come to various forums and download the AI mods. So you're securing that your mod will remain popular and also helping the community that continues to play.

The two things that are keeping DoW 2 alive(imo) are:

    1. Mods Like this one(this mod, Codex Edition,...)

    2. The Last Stand.

  39. #39
    Yes completely agree.^^^

I just registered even though I had registered much earlier during the heyday of dow 2, but I forgot my username and my email that I used to register

Anyway, I just booted a game of Armageddon after so many years, got wiped pretty hard, I have completely forgotten how to play the game. Adratus made such a wonderful AI compared to the trash relic came out with.

It still surprises me how so many RTS devs do such a half-hearted job on the AI. The only positive story I can remember is Sorian who made an AI mod for Supreme Commander 1 being brought in by the devs to make the AI on Sup Com 2 - which is probably the best AI I have played against in an RTS game. Wonder where Adratus might have gone if he had been drafted by relic/THQ to help make the AI in this game.

Its sad to see the state of the game, but there is a general lack of mods for Dow 2 ret (I think Dow 1 modding is more active unfortunately!) combined with the demise of the company have really left the more hardcore community in the lurch. Its a shame, Dow 2 is an excellent game that just needed that tiny bit more to really make it great.

Its surprising given that company of heroes is a very similar game to Dow 2 but received a lot more love and in many ways was better polished overall than dow 2 was.

Unfortunately browsing the forums, it seems many mods have sort of been left halfway done.

  40. #40
It's hard sometimes for modders to carry on working when they feel there is simply no community. Maybe I'll consider working on this when I get some spare time, and if I remember how the hell to mod DOW 2 anyway :P

Or perhaps offer your skills to Elite mod if your looking for something? I'm sure they would appreciate some better AI (who doesn't).

Also there is a dedicated fan base around that mod. Although a lot of it focuses on multiplayer.

Or be a Gue'Vesa to Codex Edition mod? That sounds good?

Don't give up! You single handedly fixed one of major flaws of DoW 2(AI).

edit: @Beatrice: What is the Elite mod? I don't believe I ever heard of it and it is not on first pages of either Completed Mods or Mods in Progress...

Its a competitive balance mod, aiming to introduce some bug fixes etc. so that some of the crap Relic left in the game is not so frustrating.

They added a couple of new units and a new sub-faction of Space Marines (grey knights).

Well I'm going to re-install DOW 2, play this thing of a mod that I made, then see how I feel about working on it.

  47. #47
    ^^^
    Dude that would be awesome

Hopefully we hear more from you!

  48. #48
Pffft yeah why not, I'll give this another whirl.

As I can't remember most of the changes I did (was over a year ago) I won't bother adding all the race changed to the first post, I'll just add ones that I make from now.

I guess my next course of action is working on the AAI :P.

  49. #49
    Awesome man.

    Will be monitoring thread closely.

Recently been having a blast, bit of a re-invention run with dow 2 at the moment.

Just a request - do you think you could implement chaplain for space marines some how? I thought it was a big omission from the game... missing him from Dow 1.

Anyway - cheers, thanks a lot for getting back to it bro.

A simple drop of Water upsets the fine balance of the system. Its ripples keep spreading and what has laid dormant is active again.

On the Real note: Can you make computer challenging without making it cheat? Is not very fun to go with guardsmen/assault Marines vs $hit Like T3 units. A simple disable of building a super unit(more Like super-fuck-the-balance unit!) on AIs pre 20(or 15) minutes would do. I hate how blatantly AI on hard cheats. Can't you make normal AI more agressive?
