Denmark are doing great, really firm and regimented play. The Dutch seem a little chaotic, compared to what I remember, or maybe Denmark are just really outplaying them and making them look bad. Excellent game so far though.
"Celtic fans right now sit in silence and watch, and hope that the damage doesn't get any worse from this Graham Carey free kick. Away by Wilson. Teale. Still options waiting in the middle for St. Mirren...OH, AND THEY HAVE ANOTHER ONE! It's stunning! It's absolutely stunning at Hampden park! And it's Steven Thompson, who scores his thirteenth goal of the season, and that might just be the goal that takes St. Mirren into the league cup final!" - 27/01/2013

so many interepted passes, Netherlands looks nervous.

Just a few minutes to go...

Oh I am happy! That was REALLY unexpected... Now if Portugal would win (or at least make a draw) my day couldn't be better

Dutch there recreating Bayern Munich's champs league final performance almost perfectly. When Robben is poor he looks really poor, and Van Persie was poor. I like Germany they play very good football, not too much defensive possession play, fast, some very exciting forward player, not convincing backline by all acounts (though on paper defenders are solid, apart from Mertesacker)

I'm ridiculously gutted that I'm missing the next game. If there's any team that I love watching, it's Germany.

The Danish deserved the win for that game. Holland were out played for the majority, though it was noticeable in the last 10 minutes; All the Danish players looked absolutely shattered and I thought that the shear number of chances Holland were throwing at the net might get them a draw through attrition.

really rubbish game so far, maybe it's because previous result means a draw isn't a disaster for either team but still poor.

I know what you mean Tir, the last game was by far the better game, let's see how it will continue

So the saying is true after all "football is a game played by 22 people and in the end Germany always wins"... Don't really think it was a deserved win but from what was shown today I'd say Denmark will make it into the next round, just not sure if it will be with Germany or the Netherlands...

  12. #62
    We made it!

Very hard piece of work, but I think overall we were the better team. But both didn´t play very well so that doesn´t mean that much.

After the goal the game was much better with more chances on both sides.

But we have to get better if we want to get far in this tournament.

    Edit:
    @Scoia:
You are never thinking we deserve the win

No I don't think that you should ever win, but a deserved win is a deserved win, small but significant difference. This game had just an equally bad performance from both teams where Germany got lucky.

  14. #64
Lucky indeed with the big chances Portugal had at the end, but I still think it was deserved. While it was not a very entertaining game with much fancy pancy playing we fought hard, and played very good in the defense. But our passing was not very precise, and not much ideas in the offensive, also Portugal was very defensive.

On the other side Portugal had few but better chances for scoring than we had. I think there have been 2 were we have been really lucky with the bar hit, but the other big chances where mostly neutralized by good defending and goalkeeping (Boateng tackling Ronaldo from behind was impressive),

Really hard to judge if one of the teams had an overall better performance, if so not by a big margin.

I think we will see a complete diffrent match vs. Netherlands, as there are 2 teams playing that playing very offensive.

Efficient, that's the kind of football I want to see from our team. Portugal held it really well, or our offence wasn't at its best, what matters are the 3 points.
Gomez was my first choice for a substitution, still glad he left his mark of course. Terrible ref, not allowing that one advantage and giving out just two yellows to Portugal.
MotM Podolski (always ), great performance by Hummels who I didn't even expect to play in the starting eleven, Müller and esp. Lahm somewhat lacklustre in my opinion.
One step closer to the end of the decadent Eldar race.

If Portugal had plaied with attacking intent like they did at end, with Oliviere (or wahtever his name is) on the whole time no reason they couldn't have won that. Not sure why they don't play Ronaldo straight upfront tbh, he's their best finisher and they have some fine wingers he's getting in the way of...

Slow start for Germany but suspect they'll grow into the tourney so this may be their worst performance, still an annoying habit of passing their way out of dangerous positions. Would have liked to have seen Gotze and Reus who are probably 2 of the best players to be on the bench in the tournament.

Germany always had luck - or simply a course of things coming to their advantage.

Remember how that portugal player had his elbow give a perfect pass for Germany's headbutt goal!

With a slightly more sober mind you can't deny some luck, that's true. Not conceding came down to good defensive work in my opinion, but us scoring was very fortunate, our offence didn't really force it. This better be a slow start if we want more than the group stage, bit worrying that the "old veterans" like Lahm and Schweinsteiger weren't at tournament level yet. Trying to risk as little as possible means creating little danger yourself. Holland having their backs to the wall can work to our advantage if it results in more space, still have to step it up just to seize it though.

    Next up, Italy going down

The only thing I am betting on is that they'll make it into the next round, I doubt that they'll win against Spain.

I predict Italy here, just out of spanish hate playing them, and I fancy them to win with a dodgy offside goal

    @ Scoia:

The other 2 teams should be not too hard for Italy, but you never know what happens.

Quite entertaining game atm, already chances for both teams, even match.

shockingly the side that brought strikers is more threatening. Not a fan of this midfielder filled tika taka, it works at barca because of Messi, this is just defensive.

Of course you never know, but I'd be surprised if they wouldn't make it. Italy is really playing good so far, wonder if they can keep that level over the full game.

I have Italy as my dark horses of the tournament (as they perpetually are) so have staked some of my reputation on them getting out the group at least heh. Atm can see either side winning and a draw quite likely. Getting sick of commentators comparing this to chelsea barca, since arguably italy have been the more threatening side so far, nothing at all like that.

Yeah, the Chelsea - Barca comparison seems very inaccurate. Italy has been surprisingly good so far I must say (after 45 min), their chances have been more dangerous than Spain's. Some good saves by Casillas there, and Iniesta is playing well, otherwise Barc... Spain looks a bit vague. (Sorry Tir)

I wouldn't know who to put my money on in this game. Italy should be happy going into the second half but I'll be looking forward to see any changes Spain might make. They really need to consider bringing on Torres or Llorente.

Well that goal was not really surprising, imo both would deserve to win, best game I've watched so far in the cup. I wonder if Spain can turn that around.

edit: Oh well fuck that, another beautiful goal by Spain^^

Very fun second half of the game, and I'd say the end result 1-1 was fair.
But damn Torres, get your shit together.

  32. #82
I'm still keeping the faith, but it's getting harder to do. And I can't get any pleasure from seeing him have a tough time in front of goal out of a Chelshit shirt.

  33. #83
Spain - Italy, wow, what a game. The draw is surprisingly fair, considering the stellar play of both teams.

Italy showing what class they have in their team and playing much better football than their traditional caternazzio. A lot of players from the unbeaten Juve side so going to work well, and Pirlo is a very very classy player, Di Natalie too.

Currently, Ireland get somewhat patronised, they play functional footy, Croatia play some lovely stuff and are deservedly in front

Ireland's problem is lack of pace, technique and invention. Also, having john o'shea in your team is a disadvantage

  36. #86
Didn´t see the rest of the game but just in 63rd minute, Ireland should have got a penalty kick for that foul, and right now they try very hard, but their technique is limited. But at least they don´t stop fighting. I´ll drink a beer on you Ireland

The first 80 minutes of the Ireland game were shameful. We're capable of so much more. We looked threatening in the closing minutes, but it was too little and far too late.
It really was disappointing after working so hard to get to the Euros in the first place, to then just switch off and under perform.

No idea how France will perform, but not looking especially good for England tbh, with all the players injured and Rooney still suspended. I'll go with 3-1 for France.
As for Sweden vs Ukraine I just don't know. The arena will be packed with ukranian fans, hope the Swedish team can keep their composure and win with 4-2.

Their defence is a worry but doubt we'll have opportunity to bother them much. As a toon fan reckon they should be playing Ben Arfa rather than Nasri but I suppose he has more experience.

Not happy with yesterday's results, looks like Italy will advance past the group stage.

Stated earlier that France are one of the strongest contenders in my opinion, if they live up to that England shouldn't be a problem. I'm really ignorant of the second match, it's always Zlatan vs. Sheva to me, has been for something like 10 years.

  42. Technical Help Senior Member  #92
Being the pessimistic sod I am, I predict a 2-0 belting from those French lads today. I would like to see England play a much tighter defensive role, filling in for Rio who I still can't believe wasn't picked. The man is pure class, still so. We cant conceive too early on in the game if we wish to keep composure and, if we're lucky, see some of that pace come from Welbeck and Young to stretch the French defence.

France 2 England 1 is my call- a throwback to our last Euro exit. I predict England is going to play compact and organised, and keep a relatively low pressure line. It'll be interesting to see if either team gets out of the blocks quickly.

To keep you informed, we shall! ;D

I totally forgot about France's former trainer and that protest the players had against.
Or what actually happened there again? I forgot, and I missed the recaps about it :/.

edit (doh, was that last Yurope cup or was that during the World Cup?)

  47. Technical Help Senior Member  #97
Milner should have tucked that one in, even if it was on his weaker side. Still, a promising start for England.

EDIT: 1-0 Fantastic set piece. I'm trying not to get overly confident but I like what I see so far.

England surprised me when they started lively and active... they were playing football (shock horror). The goal was a good set piece, unnecessary to concede the free kick on France's part. Afterwards though France started doing all the triangles and shit, and were using the overlap on the left side well. I thought England invited the pressure and when your pressure line is on the edge of your box, someone like Nasri might put in a thumping strike and Hart can't see it till it's too late. I was begging for them to hold onto some possession and try to build up again instead of just sitting back to protect the lead, but that didn't happen.

1-1 HT. I reckon that's fair on balance of play.

  49. Gamers Lounge Senior Member Company of Heroes Senior Member Dawn of War II Senior Member  #99
England really is better than expected. France has to step it up, their defence isn't looking too good and while you can't ignore the individual class of their offence, they seem unable to translate this into exceptional team play.

Well, that must be a contender for most boring match of the tournament so far. I guess 1-1 is a pretty fair result.
