Terrible match, England are boring, more athletes than footballers as expected, good result for us I suppose. France were good passing Cabaye was good (stop being good so noone tries to buy you please) and glad they waited so long to bring on ben arfa (and played him oddly deep).

That was not terrible for England, France still have work to do but they will probably leave the group stages top. Oxlade-Chamberlain and Nasri the two stand out players for me.

  3. #103
Wasn´t impressed by France, they played very slow, with that play, they will have trouble vs Spain or Italy. England was OK, didn´t expect eye-candy football from them anyway, but that doesn´t mean it´s terrible.

    Dead chuffed with that
1-1 will do, as I predicted
Glad to see we kept our shape all game. had a game plan and stuck to it
Not boring, Some would say 'pragmatic'

I would say a decent game, happy with that result. Agreed though, I was impressed with Oxlade-Chamberlain. Ukraine Sweden now. Lets see what we're up against!

  6. Gamers Lounge Senior Member Company of Heroes Senior Member Dawn of War II Senior Member  #106
Aye, think it's a decent result for England, vastly more so than for France. Sure, they went up against a very defensive team and took the cautious approach, still worrying that they couldn't capitalise on their superior attackers due to the absolute lack of coordination between them. Weak as they both appeared today, in this group it may be enough for both of them.
One step closer to the end of the decadent Eldar race.

France played better than England but not well enough to deserve a win. England had threatening moments; overall I'm satisfied. Much improvement needed if we're going to even think to get beyond the first knockout round.

Some of us would call a spade a spade :P

2 banks of 4 will always do well, especially since few teams with much penetration it seems, but it is pretty dull to watch, and England should be able to field a better team, instead we have the pack horses of Milner Downing and Henderson, players who don't belong anywhere near any half decent national team.

It is pragmatic, we haven't got much talent at the moment fair enough in a way but our play lacks ambition and is horrid to watch. I'd like there to be a plan for the future but we're still relying on veterans like Gerrard Terry and Parker, we need to build a new squad, not just wring the last life out of the old one.

Oxlaide Chamberlin and Welbeck are welcome additions but neither has entirely yet convinced me, the former maybe sparkles in comparison, has had no-where near enough game time for anyone to be sure, and Welbeck flatters to deceive a lot, can be very good at times, we'll see.

  11. #111
Taking Henderson instead of Carrick and leaving Richards at home in favour of Glen Johnson is mind boggling. There should be a place for Adam Johnson, who might not have played much this season but on the plus side he isn't Stuart Downing.

Not a fan of welbeck, chamberlin looks promising but that is all really. I agree that we haven't go the pool of players to pick from and that we could have chosen one or two different players(raised eyebrows at carroll, downing and henderson here). To be honest, I have now got to the stage where I am sick of england attempting to play decent football and lose. I am more than happy to see england play 'boring' football if the chance is that my team will still be in the tournament after 10 days . Sad perhaps, but realistic

    Isn't Carrick still ill?

  14. #114
He said if they needed him he'd go, but Lampard got injured and they took Henderson instead, so he's probably slightly miffed.

Carrick ruled himself out if he wasn't going to automatically start, and to be fair I wouldn't take him with that kind of attitude regardless.

Carrick at least could have kept the ball, no problems with a defensive approach but England gave the ball away far too much and thats unacceptable. Is Cleverely injured or something? This would have been a great tournament to test out some of the younger players as we're not getting beyond the first knockout stage anyway. Much rather see Cleverely than Gerrard and Adam Johnson or even Lennon over Milner. Would have been great to see Phil Jones and Smalling in the team as well.

Tired of seeing the same old team getting the same old results, lets get some of these younger guys some exposure and work towards the future.

  17. Gamers Lounge Senior Member Company of Heroes Senior Member Dawn of War II Senior Member  #117
Zlatan vs. Sheva indeed. Might be the last tournament for the latter, nice seeing him score again. Nice job covering the near post by Lustig, of course.

Atrocious defense by Sweden, as well as some of the worst passing in the tournament so far. I am disappoint.

1 - 1 for England was a great result. People need to get real. England, with the players they have available cannot go toe to toe with France and have a hope in wining.

A lot of the players are at their first Internation Tournement. Lescott, Ox, Parker, Young, Carroll, Smalling, and Welbeck just to name a few. Funny that pretty much all of them played against France. I really struggle to see why people are still saying "same old shit England team, need fresh faces".

@SOLID MATTIC, all of the players you would prefer to see play hardly feature at all for their parent clubs during the season. The current England team works because of Gerrard not inspite of him. You need experiance at international level to lead the squad.

    My opinion:

Need to keep Carroll due to lack of striking options (especially with another match ban for Rooney remaining), should've jettisoned Henderson and maybe Downing. Adam Johnson, Micah Richards should have made the cut, but Richards was not playing much for City towards the tail end of the season; I wonder why that is.

I think Hodgson has picked a lot of Liverpool players because they know his system from his brief Liverpool spell.

    Poor greeks already 0-2 behind.

Cech just gave away a goal, 2-1 to the Czechs.

The one thing I do ask myself right now is if the Russian fans will make it out of the stadium alive if Russia really wins against Poland, I mean right now it doesn't look like it, Poland is really better right now, but I suppose Russia will get their act together at one point.

edit: beautiful goal! will be interesting to see if Poland will be able to recover cause so far they've played better than Russia imo.

Fuck yeah Polska! Russia got 1-1ed around the 56 or so minute.

My whole neighbourhood shouted in joy as they scored, I didn't even need to watch, heh.

Good game indeed and the game against the Czech Republic will be interesting... I'm rating Poland higher because they have the advantage of playing at home and showed a lot of courage.

  27. #127
Lewandowski needs a strike partner or someone playing in the hole behind him, but other than that the Poles were very impressive and the Russians were dangerous at times but it never went their way.

  28. #128
I wonder how good Russia really is. Was the 4-1 a result of them being so god or Czech played so bad? Czech had a good start vs. Greek but the rest wasn´t very impressive. Greeks problem seemed to be them beeing too harmless in their attacks. The rest of their play seems to have improved quite a bit compared to how bad they used to be.

I think Poland will beat Czech in their last game and make it at least into the quarter finals.

Would be nice to see the host nations at least getting past the group stage anyway, and Poland after the first 2 games, would deserve it.

  29. #129
The Greeks won it 8 years ago so who the fuck knows.

so i hear the russians and the polish had a bit of a riot so they all got shot up with rubber bullets and pissed themselves due to sonic cannons. most excellent.
i think unfortunately the czech team was just unlucky. i didnt get the vibe that the russians were overly brilliant either but they got some nice play in.

Looking forward to see the match tonight. Both teams can play good offensive football, but I think Germany has an advantage as they play better as a team, and their defensive has improved quite a bit, this still seems to be Netherlands weakest part.

we have not been in top form lately but I am fairly optimistic that we improve through the tournament as we usually do, and playing offensive teams should suit our playstile better, as it leaves more room for us to attack.

Germany weren't up to their standards first game though, can see Van Persie suddenly remembering his shooting boots. Still thin Van Marjwik playing 2 holding midfielders is a pretty poor idea, especially since neither is that good at bringing play forwards.

This is going to be interesting. The netherlands are disappointing so far, but germany only needs to screw up a couple of times for the netherlanders to exploit it. Some of the scenes vs portugal could very well have ended in ze germinz embarassing themselves.

I am obviously for Germany today, but i also would be very pleased if Denmark manages to draw or even beat Portugal.

Danish and German wins today, followed by a "Schande von Gijón" on Sunday

Hope the Dutch will choke under pressure just as they choked on Saturday. Won't be easy defending against their offence desperation-fuelled offence, scoring ourselves should be the easy part after that.

I know somebody mentioned the responses to tackles earlier in the thread and it's not really relevant, but this just occurred to me: was watching the England-South Africa rugby match last Saturday (boo, Boks smashed us) and guys go down under massive tackles and basically don't get taken off until someone says, "Look mate, you are literally bleeding out of your face." The next day I saw some of the Spain-Italy football match and the giant wusses were practically falling over their shoelaces to try and weasel some sort of penalty or free kick out of the ref. It was hilarious and pathetic in equal measure.

    Carry on.

Now this is podracing! Great game, Portugal and Denmark. Now we have a very interesting situation where if Holland wins tonight all four teams in this group have three points. That would make for a pretty intense last round, to say the least.

Somehow I feel that Germany has the upper hand on Holland though, but we'll see. Hope that game will be close to the quality of this last one.

Dang, almost made it, but Portugal was clearly the more dangerous team.

  43. #143
Holland might have a chance if Robben doesn´t play

Further Im annoyed that Gomez plays again and not Klose. Gomez played horrible except the goal (and wouldn´t have scored if the 4th official had Klose in the game quicker, he was already ready to get into the game for minutes when Gomez scored).

Scoia, you surely remember Toni Polster, Gomez is much like him, just standing around and waiting for the ball.

Klose can actual play football, helping out where necessary, and get the ball himself if he doesn´t get support from the midfield.

Anyway, as much as I like the Netherlands to fail, they should rather fail in their next team against Portugal and letting Portugal and Denmark make it into the next round^^

If you insist on playing 2 defensive midfielders in a squad stock full of great attackers you at least should be very solid at the back. Instead they are giving germany oodles of space, what's the point? Might as well have Van der Vaart on for De Jong.
