Not really impressed by England and Sweden, France was pretty good though.

edit: so Sweden found back (sort of) and I have to wonder if England has a realistic chance against the Ukraine. I mean they play at home and showed that they are willing to win

That turned into a very good game eventually. Nice job England for getting back into it and not flopping again.

When I left my Austrian cafe haunt, England had conceded an equaliser while I was in the bathroom. Bastards! I get home and find out they've ultimately won 3-2. My veins are fit to bursting with what is, I sense, grossly misplaced patriotism.

The Wellbeck goal was great, not just for the incredible finish, but also for the fact that it was preceded by a good passing move. Best move by England in the tournament so far.

Otherwise it was a very suspect performance by England. They needed to keep the ball better. When they suppressed Sweden there was no danger, yet we concede 2 in 10 minutes? Poor.

Game this evening was like a couple of Sunday pub teams slugging it out
England were poor - no win can hide the cracks as happy as I am with the win
Ashley Young was awful. Theo coming on brightened up the game but Hodgson will go with Milner again because he will go 1 up front with Rooney on Tuesday V Ukraine and flood the midfield where Milner can play. Ashley Cole this evening was dreadful - surprising as he has been very consistent over the last 18 months

Ukraine were very average this evening - France didn't have to do much. Ukraine were obviously going for a 0-0 and when France scored you could see they had no Plan B

Coming from an England fan this may be taking the biscuit but the French look pedestrian to me - They have just been lucky that they have been in a poor group (and yes I included England in that). The Netherlands have been the same but have not been blessed with an 'easy' group and have still got to get a win against Portugal - that ain't gonna be easy

On that note Codex, I bloody hate the presumptuousness English commentators. They are part of a UK channel and proceed to say things like 'We' and 'Us' and 'Our Team' despite Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland all having international teams. It's irritating at best, and outright offensive at worst, especially considering they air on the STV. Commentators should try there best to be unbiased. The Ukraine Sweden game was particularly bad; they wouldn't shut up about the previous game (England V France). It's little things like this that further Alex Salmond's ridiculous cause.
"Celtic fans right now sit in silence and watch, and hope that the damage doesn't get any worse from this Graham Carey free kick. Away by Wilson. Teale. Still options waiting in the middle for St. Mirren...OH, AND THEY HAVE ANOTHER ONE! It's stunning! It's absolutely stunning at Hampden park! And it's Steven Thompson, who scores his thirteenth goal of the season, and that might just be the goal that takes St. Mirren into the league cup final!" - 27/01/2013

God our commentators are so bad, everytime they boast about 2 banks of 4 I die a little inside. If I had a penny for everytime they got a bit of factual information wrong or just spoke balls "that was an honest performance by England" WTF DOES THAT EVEN MEAN

    anyway...

Good play by our forwards, surprised me, still not convinced by most our team, or backline was very poor but we played alright at times. Carroll for first half was back to his old newcastle self of actually imposing himself, he did tire though and was pretty much useless again by half time. Milner and Young we pants, Walcott was good though when he came on, and while not convinced by Welbeck's build up play he does have a good finish in him often.

Same with German commentators, and they are particularly worse.
There are long moments of silence too in certain games. A friend of mine recently told me that it was better to mute the TV while the game is running and turn on the radio as they talk more about the actual game and stuff.

Of course, if you are watching it on TV, you don't need specific details, but sometimes it is obnoxious when they start rambling about non-german players who did something cool that they could only do this because they had a german mother, affiliated with something german like a team etc. xD - instead of saying "he's been playing in several international teams and gained world-wide experience". A bit too much in love with themselves at times .

I understand the "We are (country)" part but -- ò.ó!

I'd trade such commentators with the latin american ones anyday - especially when a goal is made.

I understand it if it's an English commentator, but still they should be more objective! Especially if it's a game being aired across the UK. But fair enough.

There was a depressing half-hour where England were as bad as they've ever been - and they deserved to give away two goals. Flashes of inspiration don't make up for the fact that on the whole England looked scrappy and easily broken. Against a better team than Sweden England will be punished mercilessly.

Ukraine will play out of their socks vs England and it will be almost like a hostile away game for England.

Sure, I agree with your assessment now Argonaut, but it's worth noting that England have had very little time to adopt the rigid and disciplined style of zonal marking that Hodgson favours. In my opinion, the England squad has comparable quality to that of Chelsea, and we have seen a good rearguard action can do very well even against the very best. Sure England deserved to be undone, and the defending at times was atrocious, but that's just organisation. Ashley Young did not track Mellburg's run for the first goal, while Glen Johnson played everyone onside, and I'm guessing no one knew exactly who was meant to mark Mellburg for the free kick, which resulted in a free header and a second goal.

Now, these are totally avoidable mistakes that no Hodgson team makes on a regular basis, or at least continue to make. Sure, England were poor but this is infinitely better than the England of WC2010. =/

According to the BBC, if Germany lose to Denmark by more than one goal, and Portugal beat the Netherlands, Germany could get eliminated.

    Hmmm...

I love these "yeah but if the stars are aligned and the Germany manager wears a tracksuit instead of a suit to the match...."

Denmark are not going to be beating Germany, 2-0.

Portugal could beat the Netherlands. Just depends which "team" wants to play as a team and not 11 prima donnas.

As much as I want to see Germany lose, Denmark beating them just seems unlikely...

Anyway would be fun if Greece makes it, looking good so far for that to happen, surprisingly^^

Denmark aren't going to beat Netherlands in the Euros.
Mario Gomez isn't going to miss a slew of chances for Bayern against Chelsea.
Chelsea aren't going to beat Barcelona, the best club team in Europe possibly the world, especially when down to 10 men.

The game is still a game of 90 minutes, and still has to be played. The fact of the matter is, as a very wise man once said, "this is a-football... and it's very strange!"

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lh8zUroNItw

Regardless, the point about my posting that is that earlier in the thread scoia thought that the Germans couldn't get eliminated after getting 2 wins, and I was just answering with the actual truth.

    EDIT:

Oh wow, Czech Republic beat Poland 1-0, Greece beat Russia 1-0.

The two situations combine to put Greece through

    Czech Republic with 6 points
    Greece with 4 points
    Russia with 4 points

Greece go through by virtue of their 1-0 result against Russia.

I thought the Greeks were done for...

When Germany beat Spain in the final we can put it down to, economically speaking, Spain being in the shit and Germany being the unstoppable force.

For a team chasing a win, Poland were never going to win based upon the tactic's last night

Last nights round turned out pretty unexpected, as I thought Russia would advance for sure.

Today's round is equally interesting, with both matches having a 1-1 score after 45 minutes. Right now Germany and Portugal are the advancing teams. From what I've seen (watching both matches at the same time I may have missed a few details) Hollan'ds defence looks pretty poor, but there has been several scoring chances for both teams. Denmark's goalie did some crazy save in the beginning of the match, and Germany have missed several shots from what I could see.

Really strong defense by Denmark, but Germany was able to create a lot of dangerous situations, just the last bit of luck was lacking for more goals. Looking forward to the second half.

Harry Redknapp has said he wouldn't trade England's front 6 for anyone elses. Someone tell Xavi and Inesta that they're not as good as Gerrard and Parker

  35. #235
To be honest, neither Portugal or Netherlands impressed me much, way too many ego's, I don't see Portugal progressing past their next match. The reason Spain and Germany are so good is because they are a team first. Ronaldo is here for his own personal glory, he could give two tosses about his country.

Feel kinda bad for Denmark, but Germany not going to take it easy on anyone.

Harry Rednapp has a face that looks like it was stretched over a boxing glove. Not a fan of his, im glad they gave the job to Hodgeson over Harry. Guy is so shifty, and he probably didn't realise he'd have to pick English players, he cant spend ridiculous money from a billionaires assets on "creating a team".

Flagg, Rednapp didn't have rediculous money at Spurs to spend on players.. I'm not really sure what your point is there.

As for Ronaldo, people never change? Portugal looked much more like a team than Netherlands ever did.

Um, Harry has had ~30 years of club management, managing a lot of English players. Sure he hasn't managed a national team like Hodgson, but no, I can't say I'd agree with your assessment. It's fine to not like him, but please don't make him sound like an idiot who leans on Levy's money and doesn't know jack about English football.

Ridiculous money? How about Chelsea trying to poach Modric for twice his wage at Spurs? These are some pretty ridiculous wage bills we're talking about here. Only after Chelsea then comes Man City and Man U... wonder where Tottenham comes? Not Top 5 anyway.

I would love to know where Tottenham get all their cash from - because it isn't from shirt sales and it isn't from filling their stadium out to the tune of 40,000 every other week - that amount of bums on seats does not cut the mustard
Also, in terms of Harry spending lots of money - he did spend quite a fair crack of money whilst at Portsmouth if we are to be honest - but in defence of him, he is a good manager but I also wanted Hodgson over Harry

Also, as talented as Ronaldo is, he is a twat - just wish he would stop looking at the big screen all the time to see if his hair is ok

But back on point of the thread

Tonight's games will be interesting again
Croatia have the talent to get something out of the Spain game and Italy have to score a few past the Republic

    Good nights viewing ahead

    Grande Zlatan!

Quite some very fortunate decisions in England's favour, guess they could use those against Italy as well. Our last match of the group stage wasn't too hot either to be honest, let's see how it develops.

Goddamn Zlatan, I think that was the best goal of the tournament so far.
France was incredibly bleak this evening though, not sure what they were doing on the pitch. Was nice to see Sweden get a win though, at least the supporters in Kiev earned it.
England are very lucky to win their match with one goal, I have no idea what was going on there.

Predictions for the quarter finals? My guess for winners in bold:

    Czech Republic - Portugal
    Germany - Greece
    Spain - France
    England - Italy
