    Cosplay Party?

In a cosplay party, can you come as any character you want? (like a character you made up?)

Depends on how much time you have and what the theme is (I suppose Anime in general), best make your own costume, shitload of work but usually pays off. If you don't have the time and/or skill to do that pick a char with an easy outfit and go shopping for the parts you are missing

I think part of the whole idea is that a well crafted costume should be recognizable. It seems to me that if you're going for a novel character, it ought to be "someone else in that same unit" or "someone who goes to that same school" or the like, so that there is an identifying uniform which other people will be able to guess your costume from.

Or do what I do. Make an Inquisitorial Seal and a small bolt pistol then wear anything you like (and I mean anything, from anime stuff to just a formal 3 piece suit). If someone asks, show them the seal and say that you're an undercover inquisitor trying to fit with local culture.

hmmmm... I'm thinking I should just rename the cosplay party to costume party. its basically a requirement for our events planning class. don't think everybody in the class watch anime.

I didn't think cosplay was limited to just anime, VG characters as well count IIRC.

Costume might be better for your task though, unless you plan on making things specific by which it's wholly your choice.

Just buy a storm trooper costume, everyone should have one.

Hell, throw a storm trooper party.

But yea, pretty much what everyone else says. I'd probably just go with 'costume' party, because then you don't really need to be recognised so long as you look out of the ordinary.

Still options waiting in the middle for St. Mirren...OH, AND THEY HAVE ANOTHER ONE! It's stunning! It's absolutely stunning at Hampden park! And it's Steven Thompson, who scores his thirteenth goal of the season, and that might just be the goal that takes St. Mirren into the league cup final!" - 27/01/2013

Perhaps it's just me-- I'm always much less interested in costumes I can't identify. (Yes, I find much of cosplay utterly boring. )

You tend to get better costumes at cosplay than at a costume party, in my experience that is. But a costume party is more accessible. But wouldn't you rather have people walk around like Araghast, for instance? A lot of cosplay is bad to terrible, but when you look at the best costumes.. those things are AWESOME.

With a costume party you'll probably get the usual halloween, carnival, whatever-festivity-you-dress-up costumes.

You always have the option of making stipulations on costumes as well (you'll probably lose some of the people who might othewise come), but that can be a bit mitigated by saying that they need to be a recognizable figure (past or present) from media, be it tv, film, books or video games.
Me - Dude! Don't eat that (habanero beef jerky), it's friggin' hot as f*ck!!!

I think you can take a character from whatever work of fiction you like (historical figures are boring as hell). You should make the costume recognizable to those who know about the source material, and you are free to modify it a bit or make it more interesting by using one of the character's secondary outfits.
