Internet 'TV style' series review thread

Alright Relic Newsers, we have had our fill of 'fave webcomic', 'fave music' etc. review threads, but I have not seen one for the new trend that is cropping up around the net:

Self or crowd funded projects distributed online.

This can reach from the recently completed Video Game Highschool, to the longer episodic format Pioneer One.

What they share in common is that they completely cutout the publisher/broadcaster dynamic and are just the development/production team creating output directly for what they feel is their target market.

This differs from previous webseries (e.g. for Jericho of Battlestar Galactica) which are usually tie ins or funded by broadcasters.

I would highly recommend VGHS - it's very much the Scrubs of this new format of webshows. Bringing in a plethroa of web celebs and really nailing the humour for it's target audience.

Critically each of the episodes is paced as an episode meaning it doesnt have the really off putting structure that its peers seem to fall into. Mix in some suprisingly good acting from the leads and it's nearly up to the par and quality of what we would expect for our half our longs on TV.

    Contrast this with Sync:

Which started off brilliantly (or more accurately started off with great trailers) but has completely lost it's shit for the last three episodes and has a really misguided attempt to shift the 'action' to 'China' which was far outside of the budgetary constraints (or shooting schedule?) of the show.

Though from the same team is a pilot for Tether which looks amazing so go check that out.

I have to say, I'm really enjoying this trend. I enjoyed VGHS (though it was a little too PC and childish for my tastes). One of the best parts was the use of songs by The Protomen, a band I've been a big fan off since Croaxleigh (I think?) posted about them in the Music forum near the time it was created, throughout the season.

The first thing that springs to mind for me otherwise was the live action Half Life 2 'series' (Though it was only 2 episodes I think). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ixFf4ljuCg

    Some great stuff in there!
"Celtic fans right now sit in silence and watch, and hope that the damage doesn't get any worse from this Graham Carey free kick. Away by Wilson. Teale. Still options waiting in the middle for St. Mirren...OH, AND THEY HAVE ANOTHER ONE! It's stunning! It's absolutely stunning at Hampden park! And it's Steven Thompson, who scores his thirteenth goal of the season, and that might just be the goal that takes St. Mirren into the league cup final!" - 27/01/2013

Dont know if these really count as Crowd funded or whatnot but.

The Mortal Kombat: Legacy web series was quite good from what i watched (i got about half way through before exams stopped me from finishing it, and i forgot about it till now xD)

Also i doubt any web tv series thread would be complete with Dr.Horribles Sing Along Blog. Who doesnt love NPH being a 'bad guy' trying to get the girl from the 'hero' Captain Hammer?

I would recommend Bite Me as a funny comedy web series dealing with the zombie out break from the geek point of view. Geek/nerd culture jokes abound.

Favourite musical of all time for me, which is saying something. Competing with Avenue Q, Spring Awakening, The Producers...

If you haven't seen this already, you aren't a gamer:

    www.watchtheguild.com

Comedy Webseries that has finished their 5th season this year, each of the episodes are between 3 and 8 minutes each, but you can easily burn through a whole season in one sitting. Genius. No ads, full quality. Also, the site has videos which has swear words censored...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grCTXGW3sxQ
It's all on youtube as well, with closed captions, full screen, but only available in 240p. No censorship. Your preference really.

Next up: Jeff Lewis' 5 Minute Comedy Hour
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0VOVuxiahk

A series of sketches, about 5 mins each. Some are quite crude though and definitely NSFW.

Ahaha it is up there as one of my favorites as well (Id likely just switch out the producers with Les Miserable in my list of competing musicals :P )

    And back on track.

It takes some time to get into, since a lot of it is about the characters. As someone who actually has been addicted to gaming and was completely socially inept The Guild particularly struck a chord with me.

I've never seen Les Miserables! If only tickets weren't so gorram expensive these days. Adding it to my to watch list now

Jeff Lewis is awesome! Thanks for posting the link. I hadn't heard of him before and he does some really great and funny sketch comedy. It good to know that in the sea of memes that is the internet, someone out there still knows how to tell a joke. It's disappointing that a lot of far less talented people have 10x the views.

Also musicals: Sweeney Todd, Chicago, and Moulin Rouge for me. Can't wait to see Book of Mormon, too.

Revision 3 has a bunch of great content, but by far my two favorite shows are Tekzilla and Hak 5.

If anyone remembers The Screensavers from TechTV, Tekzilla is kind of like a stripped down version of that. The main host of Tekzilla is even one of The Screensavers' old co-hosts, Patrick Norton.

Hak 5, while another tech show, focuses mostly on network/data security with a some intermediate to advanced software and hardware stuff. If that kind of stuff is interesting to you, you'll probably enjoy Hak 5, however sometimes the subjects can be a little dry and unless the subject really interests you, you'll probably nod off in the middle of it (see the recent series of shows on SSH Tunneling for an example of this).

Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis is an awesome series - spoof of late night talk shows with his own awkward brand of humour.

Rewatching The Guild, it still really strikes a chord with me. If anyone is interested, it's where my name comes from, and so many times last night I ended up nodding, and saying, "been there, done that."
