i need help getting the rdn tools to work on my computer

i read the readme files, looked at all the tuts on the site, but,im sad to say ,im just to dumb to figure out how to correctly install the tool kit.tell me what im doing wrong?my os is windows xp..........(windows 7 is being used as a paperweight)
so heres what i got:my hw2 is installed in this location:....."H:\Program Files\Sierra\Homeworld2"..is this the location i install it?because it installs its self into a relic folder.
    second question;the directions state...
"1. Make sure the "HW2_ROOT" environment variable is defined and points to the directory where Homeworld2 is installed (e.g. C:\Homeworld2). This is done by clicking on Control Panel/System/Advanced/Environment Variables and adding HW2_ROOT as a new System Variable"...
...this is where i get lost!..do i add the Variable in the top of the window or into the bottom window of the control panel window?....and do i type this "%HW2_ROOT%"..or do i type this "HW2_ROOT"...
im hoping someone can give me a ridiculously simple instruction that i can cut and paste..
    please help me!
    thanks

You don't need to worry about HW2_ROOT unless you are planning to use the FXTool.
Or some of the other tools that you should NOT be using.
    Are you?

The most useful things in the toolkit are the tutorials (some of which are outdated) and the commented code files (which do not require HW2_ROOT to be set up).

If you want to set it up, though, it's the bottom window, and you type "HW2_ROOT". The percent symbols represent that "this is an environment variable".
    Destroying things is easy.
    Creating things is hard.
Creating things in order to watch them explode is just plain fun.

And search for fxtool here - there have been a couple of guides, including one by me, on how to set up the FxTool so it will work properly.
