The "unwritten policy" is that bigger guns and explosions are frowned upon because they're too easy. In just about every imagewars to date, someone has posted a handgun and someone followed it with a machine gun, then a howitzer, then a battleship cannon. Ditto for firecracker/dynamite/nuclear bomb. That's predictable and a bit boring, which is why it's not recommended.
Imagewars is most entertaining if the picture owns the previous picture in some imaginative, clever or non-linear way. If your response is merely bigger or stronger than the pic before it, it might be improved if you went with something else.
