How do i transfer data via a LAN connection, (with router in-between)?

Short version I’ve been having issues with a certain closed beta, (you know the one I’m sure). Can't get the patcher to work on my system. However another system in the house, (which isn’t mine and doesn’t have the graphics card to play it), can get it to work. I know from the beta's private forums that I can just transfer the data from the machine to mine and then play that way.

The problem is I don't know how to do this via my LAN connection. I know it's possible and it saves having to mess around with swapping HD's.

So anyone got any idea how to do it.

Both systems are running windows vista home premium, (they where both pre-bought okay).

    Thanks in advance.
I don't know what i'm talking about, ignore me.

Just get yourself a usb stick and just copy it. Vista in my opinion is a nightmare
Is 20 pound for the weight like 30 pounds if a guy lifts?

Sigh, it's going to be 10 GB +, so thats just not an option, it won't all fit and some of the files are likliy to be larger than the capacity of my stick atm anyway, (it's limited to 1GB), so splitting isn't likliy to work.

You can get a 16 gig for less than 20 dollars

Maybe where you are, i don't know of anywhere that sells them that big. I can look into it, but i suspect i'd have to order one, at which point i'd do better time wise to just wait for them to fix the buggy installer.

I do appreciate the thought though and i will look into it. But i doubt there's anywhere near me that sells them at the right size. That’s why i wanted to use the LAN. I don’t have to spend money and i don't have to wait ages on acquiring something.

Since the two machines are on the same network, try this: (FYI, I'm currently on Win7, but the steps should be the same)

-On the machine with the data, share the folder that contains the game file.
-----Go into the Folder properties, and click on the Share tab
-----Either click share or go through the Advanced Sharing button
-Find your sharing machine's IP address.
-----Open a cmd prompt (type cmd in the start menu)
-----run "ipconfig" in the cmd window
-----Get the address next to IPv4 address
-On your 2nd machine open an Explorer window and go to \\<IPADDRESS>\ where <IPADDRESS> is the address you found in the last step
-----You may need to enter credentials for the 1st machine

You should see and be able read your shared game data folder.

You almost got it right Skrzyp .

When i tried the whole IP address thing it just opened it in IE and threw me to a page for Microsoft server so what i did instead was fiddle in control panel till I hit jackpot.

    For everyone else:

Find the folder you wish to share
    Properties, Sharing, Share
    Select "Everyone", then hit add

Next go to control panel and find the button marked file sharing
Check the sending computer has public folder sharing turned on
Now hit "veiw computers and devices"
Select the appropriate computer and Enter the username and password for an account on that system that you know
Select the folder then just copy and paste

No wizards or such like involved .

Unfortunatly it hasn't fixed the issue

nonononono, i've got the transfer done. But the beta still isn't working as it still wants to run the out of game patcher first, which is whats FUBAR'd for me.

Glad it at least partially worked. Welcome to the wide, wide world of beta testing
Just for future reference, when typing the ip address into the folder bar you need to make sure to include the starting double slashes "\\" at the beginning. Otherwise it will treat it like a url and open it in your browser.

Ahh, thnx, good to know .

TBH my biggest fear is that this beta will go live and still have a bad installer, it's not that far away afterall.

Are you posting all this on the forums for the beta? If no-one on the beta reports the installer issues then your fear will probably come true

Very much reported, in fact we thought a random person had nailed it when they found that purging personol settings from IE fixed it for them. But it dosen't work for me or a small minority of others.

Handy trick, if you ever need to (and have a username on both computers, I use the same UN on all my computers to make this easier) browse the other computer's drives, say C for example, just do \\ipaddress\c$

    Administrative shares ftw.
