Babylon 5: Previously unreleased concept art, new interviews & other stuff.

    Hi,

As there’s no easy way to introduce this subtly.

After contacting Ron Thornton, to find out who designed one of the ships on Babylon 5, one thing led to another, and a quick exercise in learning how to code up a web page turned into a unique reference site. (5 years, 15 FX artists and one producer later). Among those contacted included Steve Burg, Everett Burrell, Eric Chauvin and Kevin Kutchaver.

The site isn’t going to stay up forever, It was just a hobby, a one off, so I made it downloadable for anyone to keep – no strings, popups, adverts or anything else attached. Just a lot of frank, revealing, wide ranging and occasionally funny interviews from a bunch of artists with enough Emmys between them to field a couple of football teams (that answer a lot of questions and bust a few myths) and a fair bit of previously unreleased concept art, like this.

It’s not so much about the show, but the artists, the art and the technology. Steve Burg (who recently designed the Prometheus for the Ridley Scott movie) described what we talked about as the most in-depth examination of his methodology and approach to design ever carried out. Which, considering Steve’s career, came as a bit of a surprise.

This is a link to a facebook page highlighting the site.

    http://www.facebook.com/B5Scrolls

If you read the top post you’ll see why I joined FB and set it up that FB page, and why I’m pointing there. It’s far from ideal (a lot of folks aren’t on facebook), but it was the best idea I could think of to let as many know as possible, before the site disappears.

If anyone’s curious, and ain’t on facebook, here’s a link to the website itself.

    http://www.themadgoner.com/B5/B5Scrolls/B5Scrolls.htm

Though if you can ‘like’ that Facebook thing, that would be helpful in letting others find the info a month from now.

    Cheers
    Tom

Loved the series and some of the little blurbs with the concept art. Garlic vs squid for the vorlon concept was fun

They need to make a new Babylon 5 type series.

Don't get me wrong I enjoy B5 but it always seemed a bit...amateurish to me, I mean yeah the CGI was obviously okay for the time but who the hell was the art director for interiors and stuff? Guess they worked on the budget they had.

But yeah, basically give B5 some modern new love.

You could try starfleet, I hear they have half decent engineers. ; )

As for some new love for the show. Plenty of stuff is often bubbling in the background, but there’s always a few hurdles it can’t seem to get past.

I don't know what i'm talking about, ignore me.

Thousands of years ago, Egyptians worshipped what would become our ordinary housecat. The cats have never forgotten this.

The only thing that got me with B5 was that there was something I thought was offputting about the main characters or just the setting.. it was good when it got it right but there was other times that it just didn't fizzle with me.

    Spoiler

Minbari I kept seeing as proxy stiff upper elves with ion cannons complete with human war to flesh out their backstory but the Centauri stuff with the Narn was what really made me watch it. Londo and G'kar's power play stuff throughout plus their actors being the best in my mind stole the show. It was as if it was say, this RPG that I mentioned in my above spoiler and two other players janked the setting to play their own version of Dune that was better than the RPG.

But still I'm a sucker for all sorts of concept art

    @elerium:

    Spoiler

I think the most interesting question though are the one's we'll never have answers to. Over the course of the show a number of characters left. Others came in to fill the holes and performed the same general roles, but at the same time the details naturally differed. Seeing how those stories would have differed would have been very interesting. There's also that age old Lando/G'Kar question too. According to JMS when he was writing the initial premise he flipped a coin to determine which would be the evil one and which would be the good one. But who won and who lost?

Crusade also raises so many questions, even though i think they dangled the cure right in front of our noses in the episodes we did see, we never got to see several aspects of the story, a number of side plots where just starting and we never got to see where those where going.

Man, I loved and miss this show..

Too bad it ended on a sour note with the author and producers, chance of seing anything new is less than negative.

Yeah, prior to Andromeda it was the definitive case of screwed by the network.

Crusade was trying to make star trek without star trek, plus the name sucked.

For me Crusade sucked because the space battle scenes weren't as good as B5, plus a lot of the time music was playing and you didn't hear the battle.

@Nuri: a lot of that was the networks fault. They kept demanding changes, the whole episode with the fashion consultonts was a massive dig at that. In fact 99% of anything you disliked about crusade vs B5 probably comes back to this.

Actually if you look carefully Crusade had a lot in common with Blake's Seven. Not a bad thing necessarily, and certainly more interesting than TNG.

Blake's 7 is a freaking amazing show and a lot more influential than is often recognise. You largely have it to thank for Firefly.
Let's Play Europa Universalis 3: Divine Wind
Let's Play Master of Magic: Abandoned
In the beginning there was nothing. Then Steam crashed.

Just a FYI type thing. Those hosting the site renewed their agreement last year, so it should stay up for the next two. Plus I just added an update, new interview as well as new production concept art.

The links at the start of this thread still work. ; )

Amazing. If you're not on facebook, you're going to be missing a TON of content. I would highly suggest making an account just to like this one page.
