Wait wait wait! Interplay is still around?!?

It's just a name... Black Isle without Chris Avellone isn't Black Isle. And he's with Obsidian now and doesn't look like he's going anywhere.
Let's Play Europa Universalis 3: Divine Wind
Let's Play Master of Magic: Abandoned
In the beginning there was nothing. Then Steam crashed.

And Interplay doesn't actually do anything anymore, either. They're basically a place to bleed money out of. Not make money. Lose it, just by hanging around. And occasionally be sued or otherwise do something stupid.

Honestly I could call a gaming studio Bullfrog. Or Looking Glass. It wouldn't make it any better a studio.

Kind of like when Infogrames suddenly turned into Atari; they're not really the Atari company of old, They are just using the name and logo because they owned it.
I do not mind playing Icewind Dale 3.

Opening a can of worms here, but that's as short-sighted as saying "Relic without Alex G isn't Relic". Of course, people may think that (or some alternate set of employees instead of/as well as Alex G).
The thing is you're kinda ignoring the tonne of other employees that make the company what it is, some of which may have been around since the company's inception.
I am an Iron Warrior! Iron Within, Iron Without!
Looks like we'll just have to wait with bated breath until we know more about who's in it and what they're doing.
EDIT: I am interested to see what sort of stunt they're pulling.

Agreed, Gorb. However, as far as I know none of the old Black Isle employees still work for Interplay. In fact, as far as I know Interplay doesn't even employ any game developers or anything any longer. They haven't exactly kept up with the whole 'publishing' businesses.

That's a fair point Langy (I actually meant to include that, but I derped somewhere).
I wonder how many of the current staff were trained or influenced by the older/original staff. That can sometimes have an impact (for better or for worse).
#13
Yeah like Langy said, Relic's at least been a continuous company since then. Black Isle's been dead for years and basically everyone left for Troika or Obsidian.Opening a can of worms here, but that's as short-sighted as saying "Relic without Alex G isn't Relic". "The newly resurrected Black Isle Studios intends to make triple-A role-playing games based on Interplay's intellectual property..."
Hmmm...yeah. We'll see.

Having done a bit of research, people whom I'm almost certain are not involved in this are:
Feargus Urquhart, Chris Avellone, Josh Sawyer, Darren Monahan, and Chris Jones - Old Black Isle staff. All currently with Obsidian. Chris Avellone specifically has said that he heard nothing about the new Black Isle until the public announcement.
Tim Cain - Fallout 1 developer. Currently with Obsidian.
Leonard Boyarsky - Fallout 1 developer. Currently with Blizzard.
People I'm not sure about:
Christopher Taylor and Mark O'Green - Fallout 1 developers. Both worked on Fallout Online for Interplay before it was canned. I think they're still with Interplay so they might be part of the new Black Isle.
Jason Anderson - Fallout 1 developer. Worked on Fallout Online as well, but left in 2009. I'm not sure where he's at at the moment though.
If anyone can add to/correct this that'd be cool.
I'm wondering if this reforming Black Isle will put a dent in name-brand loyalty, pushing consumers to become more interested in the staff of a company, rather than the company itself?
While I doubt it, I'm finding myself, for the first time, looking more closely at the names behind the studios.
I hope that resurrection will not turn into a zombification of Black Isle corpse.

Actually that would make a cool game in itself... You have to stop the undead game developers!

Paladin... I'll take two copies.
Look at the bright side, kid - you get to keep all the money.
@Rusty: I wouldn't be so sure. Not that many people remember Black Isle; heck, a lot of people never played any of their games! Chances are Bioware's stupid mistakes with DA2 and ME3's endings did more to damage brand loyalty than BI's resurrection will.

At least some dead IPs can come back. Which is what, Icewind Dale and Torment? Hmm, maybe not, since Icewind Dale got some good coverage, and the Torment storyline is rather conclusive. Still could do more with Icewind Dale though...
Anyways, like others have said, another RPG game development studio is always welcome. Might as well treat it like new since it... basically is.
Icewind Dale was a simplistic slasher, compared to BGs and Torment, but I really loved it for being quite atmospheric.
Even if it's 'legit' it's a hoax: the team that made all the great Black Isle RPGs are no longer together.
Icewind Dale for me was the nadir, however - the game was really just the combat mechanics repackaged with some very thin glue to pull it all together, even if it was atmospheric.

Well they are, by and large. They're just called Obsidian now.the team that made all the great Black Isle RPGs are no longer together.
