Switch Audio Converter is a free program that I've had good results from in the past. You can get WMA voice files down to a lot smaller size by converting them to MP3 and using a fairly low bit rate since you don't need CD quality audio for them to still be understandable.

what bit rate can i get away with? i'm compressing the file using default at the moment. ouch1!! 300megabytes. lolz.
trying 16 bitrate and got a 15meg file; 8 bitrate gave me less than 8meg

i hope i can email the former...

It's hard to say how much you can compress the file without listening to it. What I did when I needed to convert and compress some WMAs was to try a setting and then play the compressed file back to see how it sounded. From memory, I think I got away with 8 bits on all except 1 file where I needed to use 16, but that was on a fairly clear recording of a spoken interview with almost no background noise to worry about.
