    Multiplayer crashing

when i first bought homeworld 2, i played it quite steadily, it worked perfectly...then i got the patch and it still ran nice and smooth...i quit for a month or so and ive recently tried to play it again, and as soon as i try to join a server or host it will crash the computer, there have been no significant hardware changes during this period

What does the other error file have in it? Have you scanned for viruses or spyware? What software (specifically network software) have you added since then? Any changes to your network architecture, like maybe a new router?

XP does have a built in firewall, you may want to shut it off.

Can you run adware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com and remove any adware you have? Also, do a virus check from http://housecall.trendmicro.com

I see some suspicious entries in there that I'd like to rule out before continuing.

Once you've scanned, go ahead and try using msconfig to shut down all your startup apps, then try again to play online.

i did an updated adaware scan, only things found were tracking cookies, i have no infections...and homeworld 2 still crashed after a safe boot, also fixed a few of the anomalous hijackthis results, is there anything else i can possibly do...this makes no sense whatsoever...

Do you get any error.txt files when it crashes? They're in the same directory as the HW2.log file.

Do you get a bluescreen error? If so, what's the file that it references?

  16. #16
    venomdragoon

error.txt is empty, and i do not get a blue screen, the monitor freezes and keeps the frame of homeworld that was currently active at the time of crash, windows runs in the background but it is impossible to see what im doing with hw2 on the foreground, so i guess thats considered a crash?

That would be a freeze yes. You can't Ctrl+Alt+Delete and get to task manager at all?

i can run task manager, but theres no way to see what im doing in the window of it, hw2 covers the foreground...and alt+f4 does not work

Well, your lockup definately sounds like a crash is about to happen. Have you tried waiting a bit to see if it actually crashes?

Do you have any conflicts in your device manager at all?

Are there any errors in your Event Viewer (system or application) from times around when you crash?

From your description, it sounds like something at the network level is screwing up.

i dont think its anythign physical on my end, i can go into a cpu vs player match easily with the lobby then loading the game. But as soon as i join someone elses server it freezes...but wont crash...i can host a game but people are unable to join, i think its a network issue...but my connection has no firewall, its 5mbit, low packet loss and a new modem....new modem eh, thats about the only thing new since i started up again (maybe im not sure if i had this one before or not when hw2 worked) but that could be the source.

Something is wrong with your system (this includes from your PC up to the ISP).

You need to find out if your "modem" is a modem/router which has a built in firewall... what model is it?

i strongly doubt there is any problem with my system...I have never run into problems with anything else, application, game or otherwise and i keep it VERY well maintained...only hw2 acts up, I have a motorola surfboard 5100...no firewall.

what am i looking for exactly?
i have the following entries in the "Registered Directply Service Providers" section

    directplay8 modem service provider dpnet.dll
    " serial service provider "
    " ipx service provider "
    " tcp/ip service provider "
internet tcp/ip connection for directplay dpwsockx.dll
    ipx connection for directplay "
modem connection for direct play dpmodem.dll
    serial connection for directplay dpmodem.dll

it says they're all "ok", and lists the version as 5.03.0000.0900 for all of them

What does it say in the notes section at the bottom? What happens if you hit the "Test" button then try to host a test session?

  30. #30
    senor135
    Guest
    the notes section says
    -no problems found
-to test directplay functionality... yada yada

when i test the directplay function, i can host and join over tcp/ip and ipx without trouble (this is over the exact same network and with the same other comp that i'm trying to play hw2) BUT when i close and/or end the session on all cases the test window and dxdiag program both crash and im forced to end task in the task manager (everything else runs still, such as browsing the net or whatever, so i guess its not really a lock-up)

so i guess this means re-install dx 9.0b?

So you've got two computers on your network, trying to play TCP/IP with each other? Or both trying to go out to Gamespy? If you're trying to take them both out to gamespy, do they each have their own public IP address?

Do you have a linksys router? If so, make sure you get the latest Firmware for it.

  32. #32

well, we were trying to play over ipx (err, the LAN option in hw2, i assumed it was ipx) however, i just tried to host a tcp/ip game to see if it would work and it did get to the game lobby/setup screen but we couldnt test it yet cause my brother (the other comp) reformatted and he hasnt reinstalled yet... d'oh

    and our router is a d-link DL-704

and we do not have separate public ip addresses

The LAN option is TCP/IP as well.

It's likely a problem with one of the DirectX files on one of your computers.
