To be fair* CSI/NCIS** utterly butcher science/forensics/basic computer stuff in the name of entertainment on a weekly basis and they get away with it. I think it shows that many people watch TV/films with their brains firmly in neutral/off mode and thus many things that even basic logic would dictate do not work - do. They can also butcher lots of stuff because the average person has no idea how to hack so if the TV/film says you type like a nutter for 5 seconds and then hack a phone via a laptop using a GUI routed through SecondLife that the criminal happens to be playing and thus through their phone allow you to back-track their location via the recorded GPS of the signal etc..... It works in TV land.
* and not to defend but to explain - and yes when I spot these problems they glare like mad at me and I'm no science wizard
**of which the original core series I will admit to liking and watching - purely as entertainment and mostly because of the actors/characters and their dynamic
