    Sneak into the Beta!

We are pleased to announce that Relic and THQ have extended the length of time to get into the beta until Monday July 5th. The catch is you have to do a bit of work.

Relic and THQ are going to use IGN.com's wishlist service as the gauge. They will hand out one beta key, per 10 people that sign up for the DoW Wishlist over the next day. So far, at least 300 people have already signed up (as of Friday). Hopefully, by Monday July 5th, we will have 300 or so more, which means a total of 20 keys each fansite to give out. Each fansite will be giving out keys separately.

To add DoW to your wishlist, first, you need an IGN.com account. Once that's setup, click this link or go to the Dawn of War Page and click the add to wishlist link. The wishlist is actually pretty handy, you can configure your IGN account to send you news updates about the games on your wish and watchlist.

Sometime late on Monday, the next step in the distribution of these extra keys will take place. Please note that if you are not 18, you will not be eligible to get a Beta slot due to legal reasons. However, like a good space marine sacrificing himself for the Emperor your signing onto IGN's wishlist will not be in vain! If you have 5 or more games on it, you are apparently automatically entered into a weekly draw for a free game! In addition, if you are a fileplanet subscriber, you know you will already be given direct access to the beta. Help out the rest of the community if you would though, so more people can get in and play.

Watch Relicnews.com, Relicuniverse.com and Dawn of War Planet for more info!

    UPDATE

THQ's just told each fansite that we have 33 keys each to give out. Watch www.relicnews.com 's main page for more info!

I am quite happy to not be involved in the beta.

I think it would take away some of the fun of the game as beta testing is not the same as playing.

Translation - I am not a fileplanet subscriber :fight:

Pity the BETA was not just offered as a matter of courtesy to all Relic News members, then they could raffle the rest of the spots off how ever they liked.

or May be I am just bittered and twisted.

Takes a lot of time to administer a Beta test. The thought of having to manage 100 keys is painful, let alone potentially thousands.

As stated, this WILL be an international beta. THQ wants to stress test the netcode specifically to avoid the problems that HW and HW2 suffered

So its safe to say yes, Aussie people can participate

These slots appear to be for the closed beta. Please don't take that as utter fact, but that's what it sounded like.

Yes, the amount of slots opened up will depend on how many of you get DoW on your IGN wishlist

Contact info will probably come from a THQ rep I'm sure.

    Straight from the Beta FAQ:
    Q 07:
I live outside the US, will I be able to play?

A: Yes, this is an international beta, but if you do live outside the US you may have to play at some weird hours (as most players will be from the US).

well there isn't really an EQUAL chance because they are only giving out 1 key per 10 people who signed, so so far, going by the number of replies ot this post, 23 people have replied, so 2 extra keys will be given out .... not much more of a chance it is

    I added.

I really really hope this will be the way I get in, I'm really anxious to test out this game, and would /personally/ like to make sure that when it's released, it's the best it can possibly be.

  30. #30
looking at that list, it seems most people seem to want FPS's or games that already have a following/previous games.

relic need to be advertising DoW a hell of a lot more if we want it to be up there on that list. even if it means focusing on the gamers and not the 40k player/fans

crackseed, why did you use that quote? about international players?

who says most players will be in the US, if that is the case, why bother making it an international beta. and if that is the case, its discrimination :P

i suspect they will select equal number of US and other players so that us (normal  joke) players that aren't in the US can play at hours that suit us, becasue we will have people from our time zone to test with. unless ofcourse they dont get many overseas players and have to use mostly US players.

    Thanks, it sounds good.

But all these "token" gifts are a bit silly in my opinion.

Competitions for such things are silly.

Well, its ok. But I suppose I am looking at it from a BETA and testing point of view, not a "Fre3 gam3! Whoot! I am leet!" point of view.

I see that Relic needs pubicity, and this is one way of doing it. But it is not much of a benfit to the beta itself.

It's truly sad how few people actual know about this game in general. Only 1/10 people I have asked have even heard of it. The saddest thing was walking into my GW, enthusiastic about the game and ready to rant, only to find not even the STAFF had heard about the game.

I know what you mean, GreatSamaman.

A few days before Fire Warrior was released, I went to my local GW store and asked about the game. Only one employee knew about this game. And he was annoyed, because the only thing he told me was: " We do not sell video games!"

It was just like he was afraid, that some people might stop buying miniatures just to get the game.

Well in all forums I frequent Dawn of War is in my sig, and I've told most of my mates about it. Most think it will be too much of a Warhammer gimmick and not a good RTS.

    Night, chill out man

Man, why whine about it saying most slots go to US? Would you prefer this beta WAS just US? Dammit, they are doing it internationally at least to let everyone help out testing servers and what not.

well one way of getting publicity is getting alot of sites putting up reviews. I am sure from what ive seen this game it is so polished it would get a pretty decent evaluation. And the Painfull ads at gamespy could be used?

THQ/Relic's buzz machine is either starting up late or they are seriously grass-rooting the whole effort because Sam-theman is right; DoW is definitely not as high up on the notoriety list as the competition (RTW, LoTR:BME, et al.?)... regardless of what this froth-filled hype-insane forum may suggest.

Hopefully things will pick up especially with the Gamespy/FilePlanet affiliation. The press in general (e.g. in PC Gamer 8/2004 a whole page is dedicated to DoW whereas LoTR:BME received a half-page in their E3 coverage) has been very positive though.

    OT: BTW... HAPPY CANADA DAY!!!

Yes, thank god PC Gamer is on the DoW bandwagon, they love the game there. With how many people go through that mag, there is a lot potential So all is not lost. Besides, I made sure those bastards at my GW sat through an hour-long rant about the game. And you all know how my rants are.

personally i think GW should endorse the video games, and sell them in the stores, i mean they sell warhammer novels, so why not cashin on the gaming marcket aswell? if they did that anyway, GW would be the first place i look for any warhammer related games. and the fact that i'm in the GW enviroment, purchasing a computer game about it, would probably tempt me to buy more GW products.

its a win win situation for them (as they make enough money, they can easily afford to sell games about their own hobby)

i dont really care about getting onto the beta, all i want is more CHAOS screens and info!

Would be interesting if they had some sort of tie in, like including a pre painted Blood Angel space marine or something if you pre-order. Give him unique attributes and you could have hardcore WH40k gamers buying it just for completions sake, and you'd be giving people who haven't played tabletop an idea of what the game really involves.

  49. #49
i mentioned this in a diff thread, that GW should make a limited eddition Gabriel angelos (sp) model, and put it into a special edition version of the game, that would be a great way for GW to promote their products

I would encourage everyone to do this, whether they are fileplanet subscribers or not even interested in participating in the beta. The more publicity for DoW, the better.
