    Preferred type of pet?

I own a Norwegian Elkhound myself, so I'm biased. If you picked other, what the hell kind of other pet do you have?

    Dog for me.

I hate cats; imo, they are the antithesis of the idea of a pet. Where is the dependance? The loyalty? The friendship? And for some, the usefulness? This doesn't mean I take a punt at every one I see - I just wouldn't own one.

Fish always seem boring to me. I've yet to see one, for example, fetch a stick.

Birds... well, I can abide by a parrot perhaps, at least they're smart, but otherwise they seem like vicious little bastards to me. And they make a racket, and you have to be cruel to own them, by keeping in a cage.

Rodents are OK, I had a hamster as a child. They just aren't very responsive - give it a nut, don't give it a nut, they don't actually care.

Reptiles - anyone who is into these has something wrong with them. I can't think of a more displeasing-in-every-fashion pet.

    Cat.

Cats because you can give give them a weeks food and expect that they'll eat for a week, if you give a dog a weeks food it starves for the other six days you're gone.

I own two cats...they fight a lot, which is hilarious. They aren't very smart...the male one is really fat and stupid and isn't even discreet about attacking the other one. She walks past him and he just sticks up a paw and smacks her in the side...and she makes a lot of noise and beats the crap out of him every single frickin' time.

If I had any pet I wanted, I would have an emperor penguin. I'm not entirely sure why.

    Reptile... Iguana specifically...
My sister had one. The goddamn thing was huge. Easily six feet long, most of which was tail, and if you pissed it off it would just whip you...

    DOGS.

    Cat's are evil, no question.

A free-roaming monitor lizard might be cool... as long as it knows parts of me aren't food, we're all good.

Dogs all the way. Dogs are lovable, stupid, and loyal. Unless they think they're the alpha. In which case they're total pains in the ass.

I like dogs, so long as they're trained, I've gone through training three times and it gets old before your finished the first time. I also like cats, as they are quite loyal as well and are easy(er) to take care of. However, some cats a quite agressive, my friend has a cat which likes to latch onto his arm and then chew his hand while shreding his arm.

Not all cats are mean, anyways - some will jump up in your lap and snuggle. I like those

Cats. Cats and cows. Cats are sensible beasts, and cows are placid and relaxing.

As for other vermin, I'll pass. Rodentia and insects of the giant variety are pests, not companions, and reptiles do not naturally occur in my climate, as well as being utterly noninteractive.

Lovebirds, they're vicious, destructive little bastards. Native to somalia and africa, can you imagine that ethiopian farmer, seeing this rainbow of destruction shrieking and cheeping as it settles onto his field?
No wonder they're all starving over there. And we bought two a couple months back.

As for dogs, it depends on breed. My mother has six Cairn Terriers, rescues mostly, and they are either the most intelligent and amusing sort of dog, or utter hell. The four rescues are the latter, so I dislike dogs. Kelpies, Cairns, Border Shepherds (rare breed, had one from birth to last year), and Rottweilers.

Cats, however, I understand. They just seem to fit with me. I guess it's because I had ten kittens to play with when I was a baby, and lots of kitties around me for the remainder of my life. Right now I'm in a kitty-drought. Only two.

you have a lovebird too? how old? how long have you had him/her? is he/she alone or do you have more than one?

zeke is the sole lovebird at my place and thinks he's quite the man of the house. very jealous of the keyboard, remote control or anything/one else that may be taking my attention away from him. he is super cuddly and sweet though. recently got over his "biting" fetish.

Our lovebirds are called Kiwi and Mango (one's green, the other yellow& red)

I call them Rend and Maim. They are destructive little bastards. Loud too.

Another reason Cats are better. They're reasonably quiet.

My rottweiler, Rambo (gotcha hehe) is a very intelligent and sneacky beast . He's always sleeping on my bed when I'm gone (he simply opens the door) and when I come back I can only feel the warmth of the peelows.
oh, but he's attacking only shadows

Dogs. Mainly because they're so stupidly loyal. Emphasise on stupid. What is it about dumb animals that's so endearing?

Only my opinion, but I don't think cats are pets. They're squatters.

    Zeke is very cute, Jen.

Although I have no animals in my house, my girlfriend has several fish, a parakeet, and two cats I have dubbed Jeb (short for Jebus, which is a weird New England way of saying Jesus. He is pure white.) and Ick (because he always seems to smell).

Out of all of them though, I think I like Steve the female parakeet the best. It's cool to listen to her sing along with any type of beat. (The other day she was singing to the background music to The Rock, movie, not guy.) But I suppose that could get annoying.

I always wanted a ferret though.

What, no place to vote for a pet rock? OMG, the injustice. You have to neither feed nor water them. They never tear your place up (unless you get mad and throw it at something). They never poop in the floor. You don't have to bathe them nor take them for walks. You can keep them in the smallest apartments without having to worry about pissing your neighbor off. And they can protect you too...see a burgular coming in through your window, just hurl your pet rock his head and watch the burgular recoil in fear and pain. All-in-all, it's the perfect pet

Seriously though, I am a dog person. Unfortunately my landlady doesn't allow dogs, even though we have a fenced in back yard. A close second are cats, of which I have one. He is onery and spoiled, but very cute at the same time. He's a big fat red/orange tabby, who weighs in at about 20 lbs (9.1 kilos). He's a big bundle of amusement. Despite his large size, he is still a pretty active cat, and likes to chase a string around if you pull it around him. He'll bat his toy mice all over the place when the mood hits him. He loves to sit at the patio doors and watch the birds come in to eat at the feeders. He'll just chatter at them and get so flat that he seems to melt into the floor.

He honestly has many of the personality traits of a dog. He'll come up to you and roll over on his back so you can scratch his belly. If he wants you to pet him, he'll hop up in your lap, then stick his nose under your hand and bulldoze until you pet him. Only cat I've ever seen do that.

Pets are great, everyone should have one.

I'm both a cat and a dog person. I think they complement each other. Dogs are stupid, positive and obedient. Cats are cool, gracious and independent.

And dogs are probably the only animal on earth that loves humans more than we do ourselves.

My birds are named Sunny and Skittles. I chose genderless names because I got them soon after they were born and we didn't know yet whether they were boys or girls (or one of each). Sunny was almost completely bright yellow and Skittles is kinda multi-colored.
Btw, they both turned out to be boys.

I can't believe no one has mentioned ferrets! I've had pet ferrets
for the last 12 years. They're smart, they're fun, and they're
good if you work third shift (don't make much noise). I currently
have two females, Cotton and Onyx....

Not to offend any Dog lovers or anything, but I just found an interesting quote from some cat lovers:

I would have went with a reptile, but it's a bit hard to make them understand the difference between me and the food.

So I voted "other", because I want a bat. A tame one, that would have no problem hanging upside-down from my arm or scaring off the people I don't like.
