    Marines Big guy?

I just was thinking.. this is not a complaint.. I like the marines a lot, just a question, a comment.

I was curious why the Marines don't really have something "Big".

    Chaos have Bloodthirster
    Eldar have the Avatar
    Ork have the Squiggoth
    Marines have ?

They just don't have a "Limit 1" Big guy.. not complaining really.. Marine opponents are tough enough, and when I play them, while it would be nice to have, it's not really my strategy.

  2. #2
They don't because it's not in their fluff history. Unless you consider Primarchs or Chapter Masters but they wont see the light of day in this game hehe, but .... I always consider shooting down 10 drop pods to be their "Big guy"

You have Terminators and a Landraider. I'd take them over a big-guy anyday of the week.

I think that it's good that Space Marines don't have anything big. It makes them different and calls for a bit different strategy.
Going OT a little bit, what I would really like to see are the Imperials with a Basilisk cannon as their ultimate unit raining shells on the other side of the map (well, ok, that would be little bit of an overkill, but you get the point). Hopefully in an expansion...

Marines have 4000 hp Dreadnaughts with damage a little over half that of an avatar in melee :o

...and they cost less than half the amount and come at tier 2, there is your super unit.

and you can create tons of dreads
    the Avatar is onely one
The Bloodthirster is on his own

You want something big: let do the Thunderhawk do some massive bombardement instead of the Commander

Titans aren't a part of the Space Marine Chapters, they are a part of their own area of the Empire, adeptus mechanicus.

titans belong in the Titan Legions of Mars

And titans could turn thousands of marines into slush so NO titans!

The SM have the amazing whirlwinds, land raiders, drop pods, orbital bombardment and dreads more than enough.

tbh to scale up a titan the largest is like the size of the empire state building. Thats like one leg!!!

  14. #14
If anything the only thing a SM has one of is (and is unique) is the leader (in our case, Force Commander).

Titans are huge and would be overkill. and btw when i say huge i mean HUGE! i was at the Gamesworkshop HQ in nottingham, they have a titan built to the same scale as a Space Marine. That means that a space marine which in real life would be 9 foot tall, are 1 inch high as models, so a titan built to the same scale is over 10 foot tall :wow:

    YOU do the math!

Yeah, the word 'stompy' springs to mind.

The thing is, Marines really dont need a huge deamon-esque thing, and plus it isnt in their character. The Eldar need the Avatar because without it they would get wiped out, the Bloodthirster is powerful but impractical and the Squiggoth, well, lets just say the Orks need it. You dont argue with a Squiggoth, well, you might, but it would be a mighty short argument

I calculated the size. 329 meters or 1080 feet.
A space marine is 108 inches "IRL", and one inch ingame, which a the scale is 1/108th.
A titan is 10 feet when scaled to SM size.
    10 feet is 120 inches.
    So... 120 x 108 = 12960.
    12960 inches or 1080 feet.
And that was probably a Warhound Titan, the smallest version.
    They're scout titans.
The Imperator, which is the largest, is like three times the size of a Warhound.
    So...800-1000 meters, or 2620-3280 feet.
Now that's one hell of a vehicle.
Couple that with a fusion reactor and enough firepower to level a city and you get loads of destruction.

Actually, the Titan is a Warlord Titan, the second Largest of the Titans in the Adeptus Mechanicus.

I've seen it as well, the bloody thing is *huge* and a Space Marine is only 9 feet tall in his Power Armor, otherwise he's 8 feet Egads!!! Tall man!

Oh believe me, I agree.. Titans would be rediculous, and I do not think the marines need any more help than they have.. just was pointing it out.. thought it was interesting.

Yea the Imperator titan is over three times larger than the warhound, check out the old Epic models for reference, I mean the thing has an entire castle on its back...
However they arent seen anywhere in the universe except for the last remaining two that sit outside the emperors palace on Holy Terra... Thats one hell of a guard dog!

Warlord Titans are the largest Titans still in any use around, aye.

There's Three Imperator Titans, but only two of them are functional ATM, remember there's also one on Mars Warcrier.

ahh, but then you run into the Eldar Phantom, Ork (Mega-)Gargant, Nid Hierodules + Hierophants, Chaos traitor Titans and before their strange dissaperance the Squats had the Leviathan

And the Land Train, I don't think there was anytning quite as terrifying as a bloody hige train, mounted with more guns and squats than you could shake a stick at trundling across the battlefield at you.

And on the subject of marine big guys, I think the dreadnaughts which seem to rain from the sky as soon as the game hits tier 3 are more than enough to make up for the lack of a big clunky unit which gets stuck on your own troops more often then it actually makes it into combat with the enemy

They *can't* build more Titans. The Adeptus Mechanicus have tried many, many times but since so much knowledge has been lost since the Dark Age of Technology, the best they can do is weak, inefficient imitations of Titans. The Adeptus Titanicus is an army which can never get reinforcements or new recruits.

And as I think everybody has agreed by now, Titans just don't work in this game.
Marines have Orbital Bombardment and Drop Pods instead of an uber unit.

They can still build Wolfhounds, that STC is in use still, Warlord and Imperator Titans though, the STC's are still lost for.

Most likely, but you'll never know there are quite a few working STCs out there, and these are the ones still working WITH all the lost knowledge from the dark age of technology.

You might be able to get a Warhound Scout Titan into the game. When I played Rogue Trader there was a point you could buy resin Warhounds that were the proper scale. Still... with their vuclan megabolters they'd lay waste to an entire WH40K force in one burst.

unfortunatly the STC's (for those of you who have not immersed yourselves into the story of WH40K, the STC or Standard Template Constuct, is a sort of computer that is the repository of the sum of human knowledge) are just broken remains, locked in the depths of Mars as the tech priests attemps to access the info contained within them. any STC's that are intact are lost, along with the info they contain. if any remained the imperium could master the galaxy with ease.

Lemartes has a point, the Marines would just completely crush anything if they could recover the knowledge needed to build Imperator Class Titans, and like Doomhawk said, they have drop pods to compensate.

As was mentioned, the resin Warhound were not gargantuan, but they were still three or four times the height of an Avatar or Bloodthirster.

Warhound titans aren't completely lost, they do construct new ones. But they are still mass overkill.

Actualy, Marines do have something. The Landraider. It might not be as powerful as the Bloodthirster or the Squiggoth, but you add the fact that it can transport like a Squiggoth, and that you can have more than one, and they can pack quite a punch. Only thing I have to complain about it is that it takes so long to build.

    well

The big guys of the eldar and chaos, are there more for fun, or stopping a counter attack more then effectiveness. More often then not I don't get to build a thirster, cause my marines and preds are already finishing it up.

Now, the squigoth is very effective for the orks, much more so then the thirster or avatar for the other two. But then again, when I play as orks, I tend to overun my opponents with sheer volume of troops then with powerful troops.

Well thats a combination Id never thought Id hear... See your point though. Titans would be fun, but then youd need to make something equally boyo for the other races... then your really back to square one because the whole point was to make something big and stompy for the SM to counter the stompyness of the uberunits for the other races, or in a nutshell, :fight:

And Yoe is right... The uberunits are there for sheer entertainment value (i.e. The Avatar, which is fun for mashing whole squads :werd: )

Just as a side note, the marines do have a limit 1. Although its not a unit, per say, but their orbital relay building is limit 1. So drop pods could be considered the "big guy".

Its not too difficult to take one of those uberfreaks out. If your enemy is at the point that he sends one of those, then either youve lost, or you have just as much rp to spend.

I once was able to separate an avatar from its main battle group and go it surrounded by 2 squads of fully upgraded SM and one sqaud of AM. had to reinforce, and send in fres squads, of course, but it came down. just had my whole rest of the army protect those guys.

For those not in the know, these are some of the bigger titans.

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=5915984559

In one of the photos, there is a 28mm figure (the size of the miniatures used in Warhammer 40,000) at the foot of the machine.

It should also be noted that this isn't exactly a officially sanctioned titan from EPIC warhammer 40,000. Its a sorta copy cat design from another company which to the best of my knowledge is not offiliated with Games Workshop. But I think its cool none the less. : )

Now these, these Warhounds are from an semi-official side company assosciated with GW.

    http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/wolfclass.htm

If you can see, a warhound isn't quite like a walking building that the Imperial class titans are. They are more like Battlemechs from FASA's mechwarrior games.
