    [OPINION][1.4]Worried about Single Player..

My bias: Multiplayer and competition is good, but Single Player is where the meat and bones are.

Based on how the tutorial has been running in the last 2 builds, I have to say, I'm a little concerned. At this point, 3v3 runs smoother than one single player and some AI. The reasons for this, frankly, boggle me. Why, with net code, server-side detection, and all that crap, does MP outpreform the Tutorial? I am a huge fan of skirmish battles, as it is where I learn most of my tactics to apply in single player and MP. But with a 2 gig processor, high speed memory, and a good video card, this game, in single player, simply runs like crap. There is more to optimize I know, and there will be yet another build before release probably, but as it is right now, single player is just unacceptably laggy. With shadows off, detail at medium, and an average resolution, turning down my settings even farther is not an option, nor should it be. If my machine can't run DoW at even 1/2 settings decently, what kind of machine DOES it take? Not much point to this thread, other than to say, the SP had BETTER get it's act together and quit running like shit, or the preformance reviews alone are going to kill DoW.

    It's a beta dumbass.

Seriously though,I think there are still some things to optimize. We cannot truely know about the performance requirements until release because in a beta, everything's bound to change.Quickly.

And with stated release in less than 1 month, how much more work do you think it's going to get? When I read the patch notes, I seriously expected the Tutorial to improve. Someone explain to my WHY the tutorial sucks so bad compared to MP, and I'll shut it. But it defies logic why one, tiny level with one opponent and some tool tips lags as bad as it does? What does that say for the REST of the game?

You might notice that we still don't have a date yet.Fall 2k4 can be anytime from September to November. All the release dates given out by places like EB are at best speculation.Besides that even if they did have a solid date there's always the option of pushing back the release date a bit so they can iron out the optimization problems.

NOTHING IS SET IN STONE AT THIS STAGE!

The beta isn't meant to test SP. Tutorial is basically low priority. I wouldn't worry about it quite yet.

If they included the SP campaign there'd be less reason to buy them game once it's out. Sure you couldn't play online with the beta but some people may have thrashed DoW enough to get it out of their system.

Some have performance problems in the Tutorial, others dont. I dont have the least problems running the tutorial, even in the end when both me and the AI have lots and lots of units. It runs way better than Multiplayer games, this likely due to Network Lag.

It's odd how you and I have totally opposite experiences. I can't say MP runs flawlessly with tons of units on the screen, but it, for me, definetly runs better than the tutorial. The scrolling the map is the big tell for me, it gives me lots of problems in the tutorial right now

Mid September is my guess, but it might get pushed back.

this is a MP beta they are fine tuning the MP balancing techincal aspect. the retail version build might be very different.

from what i read in previews most of the SP is done. maybe just bug squashing and optimization is left as far as SP goes.

Er the computer in the tutorial is set on easy difficulty, anything below Hard is a cakewalk, even 2v1, Hard...is pretty damn insane tho.

Though I must say, if the game gets pushed back past Septemember, I'm going to cry...

At a wild guess I'd say they simply don't have the singleplayer code in the beta version. The beta is to test multiplayer only, so they slapped a quick tutorial together, based on the singleplayer code they had when they started the beta. After that, they have probably done a lot of work on the singleplayer game, but I'd expect them to run that in a separate build. Would be a waste of effort integrating it into a special beta version where they have to hide/remove a ton of features anyway.

Here's a crazy suggestion, the reason the MP outperforms the SP Tutorial could be that in MP you don't have your CPU proccessing AI (unless you have it on of course).

In the SP, your PC is having to proccess all your actions and the CPU players aswell.

I imagine it similar to a game like UT (any version), open a map up and see what your fps is at, load up the same map with 12 bots and you'll notice your framerate falling through the floor, simply coz the CPU is busy doing other things.

Nah, they have placed absolutely NO importance in the tutorial yet. Its just a placeholder for us guys just to get to grips with the game be4 we get online. Get over it, SP will be fine. These guys made Homeworld and Homeworld 2. Just remember THAT.
