    [BUG][1.4] Badges and Banners blurry

As of 1.4, all of my custom banners and badges are blurred to hell and back. What used to be crisp and clear is now a smudge of color. I doublechecked my graphics settings, and nothing on my PC has changed between 1.3 and 1.4.

AMD 3000+, gig of ram, Radeon 9700 Pro, Windows XP Pro SP1

I just noticed this too. Frustrating as hell because I put in about a good 5 hours this weekend making badges and banners, and now none of them are displaying worth a poop. Glad to know it's a tech issue, I thought it was because I was using the D3 logo editor and it couldn't hit the resolution requirements.

Have you checked the default badges to see if they are displaying correctly? I haven't.

    Details: Medium

Most of the default ones arnt detailed enough to notice.

Well I had a VERY simple 2 color badge made out, and it smeared it completely so all you could see was that there were 2 colors there.
The Dark Angels bad has enough detail so that if the game is screwing up displaying badges, the DA will tell you for sure if it's just customs or all MP badges.

Yes, my badges where blurry as well, but where fixed after I changed my texture detail to high... restarted the game, and I believe I went into army painter, reselected the images, and saved. Anyone of these steps fixed it, so you can give it a whirl.

I'll give it a shot, although I already tried the texture detail thing.

The devs said they changed something with the colors for performance reasons... my badge/banner isn't blurred, so I'd imagine it has something to do with settings.. like if your set to a specific setting it blurs.

Blurry team colours are a result of team colour memory optimizations. Basically, what everyone is doing as soon as they start the game is cranking texture detail to max, which is the number one reason for:

    1) Slow "load" times (team colouring happens after models are loaded).

    2) Bad performance in-game - those textures don't fit on the card and cause a crap load of AGP transfers and a side-effect is very jumpy/choppy framerates.

    3) Crashes on drivers that can't allocate more texture memory and very rarely system crashes when the system gives up the ghost and can't allocate more memory.

To avoid these problems all team coloured textures are dropped a mip to save texture space. The downside is blurryness.

With all of that said, in the final game, there will be a way to disable this optimization for your local machine (by setting a value in the ini file). This feature is only recommended on systems with 1GB of system memory and a video card with 256MB of memory (no, I'm not kidding!).

    Hope this helps!
Please note: I am unable to reply to unsolicited PM's due to time constraints. Please post questions in the forums so that everyone can benefit.

So is there a fix like Sabin said or is that just a not true? ANd there will be no fix till final version?

*sigh* If people have to have an option enabled to figure out what my Logo is, it takes a TON of the coolness out of it.

Uh, yeah, I have to say I'm more than a little pissed by this. When it went from looking good, to looking like shit on medium settings, what is the point. Especially if I'll need over a gig of RAM to run it the way I USED to.

Might as well remove the custom badges and banners and save yourselves some work. As it is right now, it's worthless.

I'm sorry, but have you LOOKED at the custom badges lately now? The blurryness isn't a downside, it's completely ruined badges and banners. I don't like bitching at the devs like this, but the clarity of the badges litterally sucks balls after the patch. Seeing as it worked beautifully at one time, I'm confused why allowing it to go to crap is now ok.

Wouldnt have been much easier to say, Instead of bumping ALL of us down texture wise (until retail, at least) to simply but a small text note under the texture settings saying "Higher settings may lead to lower framerates"?

  14. #14
Yeah I'm sorry I don't understand this at all. You guys basically ruined one of the coolest features in the game because some people think their computer can handle it when it cant ? Why not just make it autodetect system settings and disable high graphics on cards that cant handle it?

I'll take the lag from 1.3 over the blurryness in 1.4. That was one of the coolest things you guys added to the RTS genre, now its just an afterthought.

This is very upsetting to me as well. I spent quite some time making badges prior to 1.4 and they looked great.

As of now, they look like crap. I had been able to zoom in on max and see my badges as crisp as intended. But as of now you actually can't even make out what they are anymore.

All of my badges using laurel's are unusable due to the smaller details in them

damnit, I just did those badge profile packs for nothing! I dont get it though, HW2 has the same badging system (or so it seems) and i never remembered that going blurry.

I guess they are trying to tweak preformance and making sacrifices where they can....personally I think Badges and Banners was NOT the place to yank off a mip layer, as it already needs all the help it can get to be visible. I don't know where else you could shave off texture mapping in DoW, but please, make it somewhere else besides the Badges and Banners. Hell take it from the terrain if you have to.

I probably put in about 6 hours making badges and banners this weekend, and I was planning on doing more ><

Holy CRAP Frank, I just checked out your badges, and they are amazing! It's really a shame.

Can't you just zoom in to see the full detail badge? Why is this a big deal?

The point is you CANT. Theyre blurry as fuck no matter how close you are.

The difference in image size is simply how far I was zoomed in, not that I streached the image.

Draptor's badges are full size, so they are easier to see. My badges on average are about 1/2 the size of his, and show up EVEN shittier than his.

Or, as in the case of mine, where smaller details are important. Mine are not even yet at the point where I am happy with them, but they were getting there. After retail release, there will be others that love creating their own badges and banners. But they will surely be dissapointed once they see them in game. The before ones hadn't even been polished and cleaned up. And even considering that factor, they still look much better.

    After 1.4

You know, it really sucks too, because when I started making badges and banners, my expectation was that would look like what they do now in 1.4. But in 1.3, I was _amazed_ at the clarity and quality badges showed up in. It got me very revved up to start designing, and I actually started to get good at drawing with the mouse(always sucked at digital design). Now, it's pretty much where I initially expected it to be. Very low res badges that aren't really worth putting work into.

Well, that bums me out... I've been making a badge pack with mon from Legend of the Five Rings (aka Rokugan)... here's an example for the Moto of the Unicorn Clan:

Fortunately, there's usually not a lot of fine detail involved with Rokugani clan mon (or Japanese mon in general), but for some of them, the mipmap change would make them look too blurry to be worth it (like Togashi or Ikoma). That's a darn shame.

BTW if anyone is interested in an L5R badge/banner PM me and I'll make one for you.
