how to download and install the demo from gamespot

    what you need:
    1. internet explorer
    2. gamespot dlx secure delivery (that's a free internet explorer add-on from gamespot)

    what you do:
    1. sign up for free at gamespot.com with an e-mail address and a password.
    2. you have mail: "confirm your gamespot registration".
    3. login into gamespot.com with this new account.
    4. click any other download to trigger the installation and setup of the free download manager from gamespot.com.
    5. go here: http://dlx.gamespot.com/pc/wh40kdawnofwar/index.html
    6. click the "get auto updates" button on that page.
    7. open the gamespot dlx secure delivery client in your taskbar and click the window called "pending deliveries".
    8. click warhammer 40000 dawn of war demo.
    9. wait for the client to finish the download.

    update:

the hard disk space requirements for the demo are:
    1. 319 mb of free hard disk space in order to download the demo. the dlx client downloads the demo to special folder. check the help at gamespot.com on how to find that folder. you can download the demo to any folder and drive on your system.
    2. 700 mb of free hard disk space in order to launch the installer. this free hard disk space is required on your system drive. that's where windows is installed. the installer extracts the files and prepares the installation of the demo.
    3. 425 mb of free hard disk space in order to install the demo. you can install the demo to any folder and drive on your system.

    how to install the demo:
    • locate and double click the demo installer.
    • after launching the installation the game files are extracted to a temporary folder on the system drive of your hard disk.
    • this can take a couple of minutes.
    • even if it looks like that the installation froze just wait.
    • after choosing where to install the demo the game files are copied to that folder.
    • if you get the "out of disk space" error anytime during installation, you are most likely out of disk space on your system drive.
    • once all game files are copied, the installer deletes all its temporary files from your system drive.

It seems there a lots of people having SQL errors with Gamespot, try disabling pop up blockers and if you have SP2 kill the built in pop up blocker there, ActiveX controls are pretty annoying with the DLX CLient.

I get this message: Protected Delivery

"We are sorry. This protected delivery is only available through GameSpot's secure delivery software. However, the software could not be installed on your computer.

Please click here to install the GameSpot Secure Delivery Plug-In. "

And clicking the link pops up the same window over and over again! Damn this is frustrating.

If your browser allows the pop-up, you'll get this:
    Initiating secure delivery. Please wait...
An approval window may appear; click "Yes" to continue.

Note: This may take 2-3 minutes on a dial-up modem.
However with my version of Internet Explorer (XP SP2), I then get this:
The previous site might require the following ActiveX control: 'GameSpot Secure Delivery Plug-In' from 'CNET NETWORKS INC'. Click here to install...
You won't be able to read this however because the page changes in under a second (I only know what the message is because I hit PrintScreen).
    Protected Delivery

We are sorry. This protected delivery is only available through GameSpot's secure delivery software. However, the software could not be installed on your computer.

Please click here to install the GameSpot Secure Delivery Plug-In.
You may need "Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart)" ticked in the "Advanced" tab of "Internet Options" (Under Tools in Internet Explorer's menu).

I managed to install the ActiveX plug-in by very quickly clicking on the yellow bar that briefly appears that says "The previous site might require the following ActiveX control: 'GameSpot Secure Delivery Plug-In' from 'CNET NETWORKS INC'. Click here to install..." and selecting "Install something" (I didn't catch the bit after "Install", it might have been "plug-in") from the context menu (It was the first option in the menu). It took a few attempts and you can click on "Please click here to install the GameSpot Secure Delivery Plug-In" to try again. Remember to close all the pop-up windows when you've finished!

For DLX downloaders, if you can't find the file:

    C:\Documents and Settings\******\My Documents\My Deliveries\

If you follow sevenredseven's instructions and click on the "get auto updates" button and your browser allows pop-up windows you should get the first text. The text that reads "The previous site might require the following ActiveX control: 'GameSpot Secure Delivery Plug-In' from 'CNET NETWORKS INC'. Click here to install..." probably only appears if you have SP2 for Windows XP installed. It also only appears very briefly before changing to the next page! However I found that by clicking on this and selecting to install it was the only way to install it.

Otherwise I can only suggest you try looking in your browser settings for something that enables ActiveX plug-ins to install (possibly without your permission). Set them to something sensible when you've finished.

I'm already 90 Mbytes into the GameSpot download now so I'll wait for it to finish. There is a FAQ here explaining how to uninstall GameSpot DLX's "Secure Delivery" software. It also tells you where you can find the Dawn of War demo file on your computer ("C:\Documents and Settings\GameSpot DLX Secure Delivery" it says).

Uninstalling it is easy, same way as you uninstall everything else

    Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programmes

It's listed as "Secure Delivery" on my panel (XP Pro, SP2)

*edit, as mentioned above, the FAQ gives the incorrect download location, it can be found here:

    C:\Documents and Settings\******\My Documents\My Deliveries\

(the ****** is your username on the comp)

The biggest problem I have with GameSpot's DLX is that I can't get it off my taskbar once I'm done with it. I can't seem to find an 'exit' option on the pop-up menu. The only way to get rid of it is to restart my computer.

    Suggestions?

Yeah, I right click it on the tasks, and it's right there beside my clock. A menu does come up, but I don't think the full menu is there. I have a bunch of options followed by a little indent line. But there isn't an exit option visible.

If you have Windows XP with SP2 installed they've tightened up the ActiveX security settings quite a bit. I had to enable a few settings in the IE security panel to get the GameSpot downloader to work...

    You might also have to:

i put up with that %& for about 30min, then trying to find their ftp and after that just felt like "ok, how can i delete my account and curse you all to bloody hell for this crap?"

so lets see, i need to register, install their software of which i a) know nothing and that b) requires to use security hole numero uno (aka ie + craptive x) and c) isnt looking too good after this 2 year old article: http://www.extremetech.com/article2/...,365073,00.asp (might not be same anymore, but i wont take chances as i dont consider the number of hairs on my butt anyones but my own business).

just think of all the frustration that would never have been necessary without that kind of "cooperation" (and i REALLY hope that it at least pays VERY well for relic) or just looking for other sites (that seem to have offered it only minutes after, or at least less than an hour).

and frankly: neither their server nor your connection will magically get any faster by installing dubious software. IF it is any faster, than only because the majority is put off by stuff like that.

Would it be possible to make a closed sticky about Troubleshooting Downloads and Installation? At least the installation part might be relevant even after the demo runs of of interest...I would be happy to contribute, hell I could even set the thread up, but not without Mod coop...

    Would maybe save some threads...
