Demo Settings versus Final Game Settings

    Hi All,

Since there seems to be an issue with the incorrect readme being in the demo download, I thought I'd clear up some missing settings (for those familiar with the beta atleast).

For space requirements, the following settings are not in the demo:

    model quality
    sound quality

Both of these default to medium. So in the full retail version you can improve these settings if you have a high end machine, or turn them down to have a smoother experience on low end machines.
Please note: I am unable to reply to unsolicited PM's due to time constraints. Please post questions in the forums so that everyone can benefit.

Wow! I thought they were amazing as it was... but on a higher setting will be amazing .

I noticed the artwork and models are much nicer than the beta (may just be imagining it :P ) and look forward to the release version!

You can edit the difficulty of single player? Ahh yes, the Devs pwnzerz once more, taking ideas from Cata

What does pwnzerz mean and what is Cata? Anyway it's pretty standard to be able to change the difficulty of a single player campaign, so it's not as if they took the idea from something else.

They own...they are good....that is pwnzerz. And Cata's full name is Homeworld: Cataclysm. A Homeworld game they co-made with Barking Dog. But its in the past (4 years ago), so hehe.

Question for the devs: Are you guys even aware of turning up shadows to max lagging peoples games on high end machines?

Is this a known issue? I havent really seen much info on it.

I'm not a dev, but I've troubleshot all of Relic's games. Shadows are a big hit on performance.

Ahh, the answer I was looking for.

    thanks!

Hopefully Ati will help optimize with a new catalyst release.

It's not just ATI, it's Nvidia cards as well... in my experience anyway.

aye; in the beta I turned shadows off and I loaded about 25% faster.

in HW2, when I turned shadows off, my computer went from lag to dream.

don't turn on shadows unless you have a really really really high-end computer.

Thats the thing tho ...... I DO have a very high end computer, and it still lags when shadows are turned on.

shadows are fine for me, until you hit multiplayer... it barely runs for some reason in Mplay with shadows on.

    this is my rig:

    Athlon XP 1800+ @ 1.54ghz
    256mb DDR RAM
    128mb Geforce4 Ti 4600 APG

i have no problem running the demo with everything maxed out, sure its jerky when an Ork horde launches an invasion, but in an RTS you dont need a smooth framerate like with twitch shooters. I can play fine. Only during the absolutely massive battles, like 3 full marine squads against 4 Ork squads with the explosions and bullets flying does it get unplayably jerky.

Its a well known fact that shadows in any game lowers your frame rate.

So turn shadows off. They make very little differnce imo and give you a huge speed increase.

There are 4 settings for shadows: off, low, medium and high. With shadows on low [were off by default], with textures and terrain set to high, seems to run smoothly enough on my rig:

    P4 2.8ghz [hyperthreading on]
    512 MB RAM
    Creative 3D Blaster 5 [Nvidia FX5600]

Is the main difference for shadows between off and low, or do medium to high add a significant load?

i dont remember that squiggots where so hard in the beta

that squiggot in the demo mission killed 3 dreds, 2 whirlwinds
a listingen post, heavy bolter turret and a space marine squad with launchers before i got it down :argh: and i got my other squads (2 assault marines, 2 space marine) seriusly damaged

i dont know if this right but all my missiles seemed to missed
the squiggot, anytime i fired them at it they just passed through it but didnt explode

You obviously didn't send enough - I had 7 squads of marines and 8 dreadnoughts - took it down with a loss of 5 dreads.
    That was highly of topic...

Back to the settings - I'm very pleased that theres another setting I can turn down

Well, dynamic lighting is a resource hog. Just think about how shadows are drawn. It isn't just this game. Try any videocard in 3DMark 2001 High ply count multiple lights (8) test and you'll realise that on this ground the performance increase is not that spectacular.
Caclulating dynamic lighting without optimising algorythms (like Doom3 engine) is a graphic chip killer even today. Basically it can freeze any computer if self shadows are allowed ... it acts like a multiplier to the poly count.
Advice: if 4 of you play on a big map as orks, forget shadows. While the game might not lag on a top rig (Radeon X800XT/Geforce 6800 Ultra, Athlon 64, 1 Gb RAM and so on) framerate will be greatly reduced.

Just to let you know that particular squiggoth has about double health to the normal multiplayer/skirmish one! I took it down with 3 dreads 2 assualt squads and 3 squads with rocket launchers......lotsa causalties though, rockets are a bit hit and miss and yes they do pass through things and not explode sometimes

Im Running on a pentium 4 3.0 ghz with hyperthreading 512mb ram and a Radeon 9600 and i have next to no trouble with shadows on high

I totally agree with the shadow issue. I have a middle grade Pc and turning on shadows on mid or high turns the whole game into a lag-a-thon. Seriously even just one marine squads by it self starts jerking somewhat. Imagine a battle. What I had noticed though is that certain games the shadow feature doesn't take as much of a hit out of performance. Maybe it's just me but I run Splinter Cell Pandora Tommorrow with shadow middle and it's fine but with Warhammer mid is horrible. I'm guessing it depends on the engine the game runs on. Could anyone answer or help with this question? It would be greatly appreciated

Exactly how many objects is Pandora Tommorow drawing at one time? Dawn of War probably shows far, far more than PT does, even though the enviroments are less detailed.

PT needs the shadows badly, too, which means more time probably went into getting them to work smoothly.
