    Return of the Genestealer Cult?

Ehhh... hope you guys don't mind bringing a crusty old fan up to speed. I haven't played 40k since the early 90's, but DoW has drawn my interest back to the old TT habit again. The problem is, I was a genestealer cult player, and it seems that in the past decade GW has given my army the ceremonial boot. :smash:

Anyone know why the genestealer cult army was discontinued? Is there any way to use a cult army under the new rules anymore or am I SOL? The 'stealer cult was great fun back in the day, because you had to convert everything (tanks, brood brothers, hybrids, etc). Gave your army a lot of character. It's a shame they're no more.

Would be nice if they at least had a fluff explanation for the disappearance of cults. I take it GW isn't going to bring them back...

For the time being, it is no more. There are some Chapter Approved rules for using the Cult, but i cant tell you what issues of White Dwarf they are in. I too have been playing a long time (since it was called Rogue trader) and i too had my experiences with the "Cult". They will probably make a return in the next revision of the rules. (I hope, as it was a great GREAT pleasure killing them....LOL)

There is some talk of them being brought back for the next Tyranid codex, due sometime next year. Fingers crossed.

I've been using the Genestealer Cult for years. As long as you aren't worried about sanctioned tournamments, you can likely play them. I'd love to see them become "official" but for the time being I have fun with them regardless.

They are in an early Citadel Journal, ask sweetly and they might make a pdf for them.

Ah... yes, I've gotten my hands on a PDF of the GW approved Genestealer Codex from CJ. And I have mixed feelings about it already.

HQ choices are more useless than ever, now that the Magus and Patriarch don't even have psychic powers anymore. With toughness 3, two wounds and flak armor, the magus seems to be only good at hiding under a rock. But at least the new Heirarch HQ only costs 20pts. (20pts for a commander! Good gods!) More points on troops I guess. Maybe it's not such a huge loss. I've always felt more tanks and more 'stealers was the road to victory anyway.

PS - Anyone seen the new Brood Brother Initiates in action? At 4pts a model, you can have a LOT of the little buggers. With all the multiple combatant bonuses you'd get from 'em, it seems like your purestrains would be able to take on anyone in CC. Assuming any of 'em lived to get there.

They're actually quite fun. It's like having an Imperial Guard army, minus some of the disadvantages. Your squads almost never break, as long as they're under the watchful eye of the Patriarch/Magus, and the IG's lack of close combat ability is made up in spades by some of the best melee troops in the game... genestealers!

Plus, with initiate squads that can have as many as FIFTY men a piece, small armies (SM, etc) simply won't be able to kill them all off before they swarm over top of them.

... Just break out the heavy bolters and prepare yourself the the biggest bloodbath you can see in 40k. :bandit:

If you get your opponents permission you could always use Purestrains as a 0-2 Elite choice. No mutations or modifications, though, as they are basic Genestealers. I've thought about this myself before.

I used to use them in small points tournaments. Genestealer Cult is vicious in low points games. We busted out 40K in a Flash a month or so ago (40K in a flash/40 Minutes is about all I'm willing to play anymore) and my Cult army violated my enemies, crushing Chaos, Eldar, Tyranids and Space Marines easily.
