I'd like to see the Research Ship buildable without a cap ship facility. (Like scout don't rquire fighter facility) Right now getting this out early is a huge resource drain compared to the Vagyr, whom already have the advantage of only needing 1 research tech.

I agree. Maybe boost the initial cost a little and put it under the utility ships like it was in HW1. sm

I dont even think the cost needs to be boosted. It'll still be way more than on the Vagyr side.

On a seperate note, this stil sceduled for today?

Tenative release date is sometime in May, but as we haven't heard anything from beghins in quite some time, I don't know if that still holds...

It would be nice if he'd at least stop in and say something now that we're several days past the release date without any word. Just things are taking longer than expected, give it another week - or something along those lines.

While many other people here see that Complex is a great modification, I may be the only one to see it as indeed sub-par. Memory usage while running standard HW2 or other mods can range from 170 to 250 MB, however Complex seems hell-bent on running at 300+ MB of RAM, leading to some horrid in-game lag at times.

As Hiigarans, researching is a living hell and a half - the entirety of the starting resources goes directly to building the Research Station, and even then I still have to retire the Capital Ship Facility that provided the build option for it to complete even two wings of standard Interceptors. After nine in-game years, Pulsar Weaponry research was finally finished, and two years after that, I had a force that would have taken 5 minutes to build as compared to 10 minutes with Complex.

Now, thinking that the computer player on Easy would be struggling even to get to my point, I decided to assault them with two groups of Pulsar Gunships, 4 groups of Interceptors, and 2 groups of Bombers, which took a while to build.

The defenders put up quite a wall of fire with their ten or so groups of Assault Craft and 5 groups of Lance Fighters.

Honestly, I can't see any point to this modification while it takes so long for a human player to build while the computer player is sitting happy with enough fighters to take down both the US and Japan at Midway. The controls and gameplay are not intuitive anymore - there is simply too much micromanagement to really get by.

  16. #1116
HW Complex is supposed to be appealing to people who like micromanagement.

It is also supposed to be for expert players, even on easy mode. It is not supposed to be a quick game, hence the large research tree.

As for the RAM problem, HW Complex has more going on than other mods.

Love this mod ! only thing i think that need some change 1. AI to easy at any setting. 2. lagg near end or middle of game (know u trying to fix that ) 3. more ship that u can add slots too mabye make most ship that way but think u should b able to add the gunns that u whant .4 think u need to add a long range platform like the sniper ship somthing slow but that could out range anything in game . Keep up the great work ...

Dan, basically what you have to do as Hiigaran is hunker down and go defencive at the beginning. Position your mothership between the AI and your resources, I have actually been experementing with the following startup: refinery - 4 collectors - refinery - 5 collectors - refinery - 5 collectors - refinery. And then after that working on getting a research platform and some fighters out. It may slow down your initial research and fighter production, but it helps aleviate the resource cram. I also sugested on forums previously making the research platform not require a cap-facility to build, which i still thing would be a HUGE improvement. (May even try and alter it as such myself if it isn't changed)

The lag goes away if you follow that suggestio of making the HW2 logfile read-only. As for Ram, 200mb or 300mb really makes 0 difference. The lag is all due to the log file.

Yargnit, with all respect, the lag is not all due the log file. The more ships you have, especially, the more fast ships you have on the screen, the more the performance goes down. And this can be drastically: on my pc framerates drop down from initially 60-70 to 30 and even more. I've experimented a lot with different driver settings and fiddled around with hardware too, but it appears that can be solved efficiently. Also, no one could really give me an explanation for this. The only workaround is harvest the debris as much as you can and - implement a fast, and I mean very fast, video card. Also, I'm aware of your log file syndrom, but it has not that effect you think.

Incorrect, Babbo. Whilst it IS true that the log file is not the only culprit for bad framerates and whatnot, before I set mine to read-only, the game would stutter about every three seconds or so, even from the beginning. Now, depending on your system, you COULD theoretically be able to play without noticing this (really freaking fast dual-core CPU) but in most cases it solves a lot.

Naytheless, the overall accumulation of debris is the major facotr in late-game slowdowns. by the end of a match, I'm having to fight through the framerate drops. Not to mention that, yes, having a lot of the level viewable (with fleets, or with probes) and having massive fleets, you'll see a lot of slowdown there too.

So, you're both correct. The early lag is due to the log file, whilst the late-game lag is due to fleets and debris.

    Aside:

Perhaps it would be possible to give the debris a lifecycle? Like, say, every debris chunk only lasts a couple minutes? Or would that perhaps add MORE strain (as the CPU is having to keep up with timers for every chunk)... hmmm...

I know what end game lag due to too many ships looks like, I have just never seen this gamemode cause it, even with a capped out fleet @1200 men. The only time I've seen that is in the Star Wars mod with unlimited unit caps and huge resource injections vs an expert AI.They had well over a hundred battlecrusiers and i was flinging a few dozwn star destroyers at em. In Complex i've never seen anything nearly like that.

What I mean when I say "lag" is, every 20 seconds or so the game would completely freeze for a second. It's a nuisance.

Thanks, Sarkazein ... hm ... I'm still not convinced, at least with your explanation what concerns the beginning of a game and the fact that the read-only setting would help a lot. Because, lags occurring as a consequence that the log is allowed, are mostly due to the write process on the harddisk and not due to a slow CPU. So I mean, if you really recognize these as annoying events, then you probably have a slow hdd. I don't. So maybe I underestimated that initial gaming effect, while we both agree upon the debris problems in the later phases. Unfortunately, I assume that this behaviour is something which is hard-coded in the HW2 engine and it cannot be changed. I know of a Radeon X1900XT user, who complained dropping frame rates ... So from that point of view HW2, and especially all the mods based on it, will remain limited for some more years - until graphics card industry has reached a standard that is far beyond the current needs. We simply have to wait.

Let me just say that I have made literally no changes to my computer in over two years.

I'm still running off of my old GeForce 4 Mx 440, an AMD Athlon 2600 (this is a bit more recent than the video card), with a total of 768 megs of ram, and I have little problem running a game with 2-3 CPU on Normal-Hard.

Late in the game, the lag does get pretty bad, (especially with the debris fields I make  ) but it's not bad enough to prevent me from playing the game normally and win. I've played a human opponent or two as well. (With the log file on read only)

If I can deal with the lag and still have an enjoyable game with this ancient system, then you lot shouldn't have much a problem with it.

I do agree that, once you learn the AI's strategy, it does get a bit boring... They always send in wave after wave, never trying anything new... sometimes they seem to just stop building and doing anything at all. Also, they'll constantly send shipyards and carriers to resource OP's defended by hostiles, and lose ship after ship.

(I kinda forgot how to show framerates, otherwise I'd let ya know. I'm sure it drops below 20 though lol.)

What I would really like to see is a resource injection option in the Player Vs. CPU setup screen. I know that the idea of Complex is to produce a much longer and more strategic game but it would be nice to allow resource injections just for variation if we so want.

I've tried using the HW Classic mod in conjuction with Complex but they don't mesh. Likewise, I'm not good enough at modding to work out how to implement it myself.

I am currently running Complex 4.3 and I noticed an odd problem with the fighters. The fighters keep crashing into the enemy ships; I lost five bomber groups to three siege frigates because every time they would make a run at the frigate one or two would crash into it.

I also have a ship suggestion, but since v5 is due out soon it is probably too late: A "Salvager" or "Recycler" to gather up all that debris faster. A frigate size ship with an arm that gathers up debris arround it and either stores it for drop off, about 5k woth max, or turns it into RUs. Upgrades could include upgrading the arm speed, capacity if it stores the debris, and engines of course.

Excellent mod by the way. I love all the new modules, ships, and techs. You all have done a great job and I look forward to v5.

Have not had my fighters ram enemy ships. But have had a number of corvetts run into some of the piles of junk on the maps. Seen some AI destroyers do it as well on one map (cannot recall which one though). It's like the ships don't know how to avoid other things anymore. sm

    @ Babbo:

Mmm... well I would have thought that to be true too, except that I have a 7200 drive that works great for everything else. Either way, we're probably both right, I'm just reporting what I've experienced. If you don't have trouble with the log file, then I envy you and whatever setup you have ^_^

oh the problem with fighters and stuff crashing so "spectacularly"(yes my s/p sucks for a highschooler -.-;, is because that the speed upgrade is beyond what it was supposed to be in the original game. By normal speed, the bombers would avoid the frigates and be safe, but with the extra speed it doesn't apparently have teh reaction time left. same holds true for vetts and DDs.
By the way, is it possible to slow down the fighters when they make an attack run so they get more attack time in?

    Instilation problems

I just downloaded the 4.3 version of the game from two different sources and i have found that i fail to get either to work. I follwed the instillation instructions to the letter, however when it comes to setting up the shortcut windows wont allow me to imput the suggested path. It states that "the name in the target box is not valid". If anyone can help me out with this it would be most appreciated.

So far, i have tried putting the .big file in the suggested place, along with the release folder where the original .exe is. Also i have tried dragging and dropping the .big file onto .exe file. These were really the only things i could think of, and i tried them but with no results. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Drakendor: Ususally that means that it can't find the original exe (homeworld 2 exe). Make sure that you don't remove the original path, and only add the -mod line.

    For example: "C:\Program Files\Sierra\Homeworld2\Bin\Release\Homeworld2.exe" -mod Complex43.big

Make sure not to include the -mod Complex43.big in the qoutation marks.

I have encountered a problem with save games now. My save will no longer load. It had been working fine for a while. I played a few more hours, got cruisers, upgraded the MS, made lots of debris, and other usual stuff. Now, when I go to load the progress bar gets about half way then the game desktops.

Anyone else have this or have any ideas?

  36. #1136
I think the loading problems come from there being to much info being loaded at once (map and the mission stats). Try starting the mission and then load your saved game. sm

Ive searched though the thread and cant find the answer to my problem.

playin 4.3 the game always crashes when i play HGN and always in the same place.

When i build the Engineering module on the research station.
I know this is the problem because i`ve got a save game at various points in the game prior to building this and prior to the completion of the engineering module. therefore this a bug? or some other problem and not some hardware or heating problem.

any help would be great as i do like to beable to play the game as intended and use all the gear and not just half of the gear

behings, i downloaded your mod complex v4.3, it's great, but anytime when game is unpaused every 3~5 seconds it lags on 1~2 seconds...

It lags not because of my computer, i know it, my computer is excellent "CPU: 3.6 Ghz, MEMORY: 2 gb GDDR, VIDEO: GeForce 7900 GT 256 mb video & etc..."

Can you repair this bug in the next mod?

You need to set your HW2 log file to "read only" Stalker. The default locaition for the log file is: C:\Program Files\Sierra\Homeworld2\Bin\Release and it is called Hw2.log. If you right-click in and go to properties, there is a box for read-only. Selecting that will solve this issue. I have found that I need to do this after I launch HW2in order to take effect, it seems as if each launching creating an invisible log if the previous one is write-protected, so let the game launch, then window out and make the file read only. This should fix this issue entirley.

    Brilliant!

I've downloaded this Mod last week and have tried it a dozen times now.

A few bugs though, like ships crashing on debris or asteroids when speed is upgraded. I've lost 10 wings of Shiry like that ; they crashed into the carrier and frigates they were attacking. Also, some maps don't accept a set number of collectors at the beginning (you say 5 and get only 3).

I would have loved to see more interceptor types (defender ?), and more capital ships too. Like bigger frigates, or other Destroyer-like ships (more Destroyer upgrades?). Why can't capital ships sport a defence field? That would be cool.

What are Shuttles good for? Do they do anything, except looking like an unarmed Battlecruiser?

All right, don't get me wrong, this mod is fantastic and I don't play the unmodded game anymore. Can't wait to see version 5. Any recent news regarding the release?

It seems that in the readme file for Complex Beghins says that he is planning to use the shuttle as an armed transport because there is a definite disadvantadge to have to slow down your strike group of bombers corvettes and frigates with full speed upgrades and waste them when a slow-moving battlecruiser is added.

-also, cant find that H2.log file thingy u all go on about lol.

-when opening complex, everythings fine till i run the game - loading screen- and it cuts out at LoadScarFile or something..

    help required

Umm... never had that problem myself... that's a little confusing. Try backing up any savegames you have (In your PROFILES folder - I think it's in something like C:\\Program Files\Sierra\Homeworld 2\Bin\Profiles). Then uninstall the whole directory through the START->SIERRA->HOMEWORLD 2->UNINSTALL HOMEWORLD 2(don't worry, it won't remove the backup save as well), then go to CONTROL PANEL -> ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS and make sure HW2 isn't in this list. If it is, remove it.

    Then install it all again.

Don't download complex yet - go into HW2 and download the patch before you put any mods on. When it's all finished, restart the machine and open HW2. If it's worked, it should say Version 1.1. Then you can download complex and whatever else as before.
If it goes back to 1.0 after the install, then it's a bug with something. If it then closes again at the same point, I'm not sure what's happening, so you need to go into the BIN directory again, then to RELEASE and show us the most recent .log file (use notepad). That'll tell us what the error is, and we can try sorting it out that way.

I've never seen this problem with any mod before, so I don't really know (I kinda did a foolproof guide as well, but not intending any offence or patronising )
    Hope it helps...

Hmm yeah, OK. I've read the Read Me file again and it says Shuttle is not complete.

Nuther thing I've noted recently, it's the video settings thingie. The Mod doesn't seem to "remember" the video res, and every time I load the game I have to set the res for my system again (1024). Looks like the default is a higher res.
