DoW choppy when scrolling over units

Hello I have a small prob when playing DOW. If I scroll over many buildings or a lot of units the scrolling becomes a bit choppy. I dont think these are low frames because I tried it with every graphic detail set to low and its the same and the units and animations work smooth. I´ve tried it out on another computer as well and it happened the same way (both have radeons with drivers up to date). If I use the pause mode and scroll the choppiness is gone, very strange.

    My system:
    P4 3,2 ghz, radeon x800xt with 256 mb, 1 gb ram

I saw in other posts that you need the contents of dxdiag, warnings.log and graphicsconfig.log. You can see them below:

Agreed. I spent 50.00 on this game and can play nothing but multiplayer. On LARGE maps such as the first one on the campaign. The scrolling and movements of units in general are choppy, like there is a 1/2 sec lag. This is only on LARGE maps with AI. Smaller maps like the tutorial map are splendid. It seems to be a problem with AI and the map size. Here is what i've tried.

    Reinstall Windows XP w sp2. - P4 2.4 ghz 1024MB ddr 2700
    Turn on/off smartgart - ATI 9800 pro 128MB
    Tried ATI 4.7's 4.8's and 4.9's.
Used safe mode 800x600 16bit low everything.
    Turned windows paging file off.
Turned windows pagign file on with 1000/1000 MB
Set BIOS to share 4MB AGP to 64MB agp, tried both.
Defragged drives after a fresh XP reinstall.
Used ATI tool to over clock form stock speeds to XT speeds.
Checked for spyware. Adaware and Spybot.
All drivers updated: Tried with/without latest via 4 in 1
    Updated sound card drivers.
Removes sound card from system totally.
Removed all devices except video/cdrom and 1 hdd.
Changed refresh rates from 60-90 @1024x768
Put quality settigns to LOW on everything in ATI cntrl panel.

NOTHING WORKS. even on the lowest of the LOW settings on a 9800 pro. This must be a bug /fault of the game. I've tried everything. Does anyone have any tips? This is a damn good game and i've been dying to play I'm gonna be forced to buy a new system and trash a p4 2.4 and 9800pro?/? wtf. Speaking of which any1 wanna buy a used ( 3 months old) 9800 pro. $50.00, dosent seem to be worth much more atm.

Somehow i think if i had a 6800GT i wouldnt be havign problems either. I think this is a problem with some combo of ATI cards and or motherboards, not sure yet. Memory coul d be a bottleneck. I'm not usign the fastest ram for my processor. I just dont know . . . :fight:

I had the same exact choppiness problem, where nothing you could conceivably do would fix it! It was one of the first posts on this bug forum, actually. The best solution was to turn down the shadows. With shadows down to low and everything else at high, it ran acceptably. It is a bit irritating to have to do that though, and it was *still* choppy when lots of units were onscreen. I swear its a problem with AI processing or something. I'm using a Pentium 4 3.0 ghz and a GeForce 6800 GT. I really hope they investigate this problem further...

EDIT: I just played a skirmish game as the Eldar against a single Standard AI opponent, and by the time I had a reasonable force, it was UNPLAYABLY choppy. And that's with shadows and terrain on LOW. Something is clearly wrong with this game's singleplayer/AI programming. 4vs4 multiplayer is as smooth as silk.

I can prove that it is some driver compatibility issue in the game because when I was using my geForce 2 ultra 64 it ran without the scroll issue on the demo. Now with my radeon 9800 SE softmodded to 9800 pro it has extreme issues no matter what the settings are..that means its the game not us...the card eats up all my other games and has room to spare even on this intel 1.4, go figure, they need a patch, disappointing they did not test these cards and/or boards

Yes, I agree, something is definitely amiss. This is a problem that's appeared not just for AMD or ATI users, but for Intel and nVidia users as well; I don't think this is a random issue. Something must have been lost in translation between the demo and the final game.

Something is up with your hardware, or at least the game thinks there is.

Make sure all of you try the game on the lowest possible settings first, ESPECIALLY turn off shadows.

I used FRAPS to record my framerate on Campaign Mission 1, with all graphics set to "High" except Shadows and Terrain Detail, which were set to low and medium, respectively. Here is the result in-game:

After panning around the map, with FRAPS recording the FPS every second, here was the result:

However, the choppy scrolling was still present... it scrolled around like I was suffering from 600-800ms lag, even though it wasn't even an online game. This shows that frames per second has little to do with the problem, at least in this case.

Nah, that error is a bit bad - as you can see, it's -0, it's just a rounding error from the math and nothing to be worried about. When it shows something like -3574363, then you should worry!

Gigabomber: Have you tried going back to the GF2 to see if the issue still exists? But on a 1.4 CPU, it's not surprising that it's choppy - we are far far harder on the CPU than the video card, more so than probably any other recent game.

terrific: Have you tried a higher AGP Aperature than 64mb? Even that is quite low for a system with 1gb ram and a 128mb video card - try 256 or 512mb.

Yeah but my Main menu screen the Marines animation skips/choppy and the song skips/is choppy.... so is this related it goes on throughout the game, is it a graphics card problem or my comp just cant handle it the game?

Tried multiplayer, the effect of the lag was greatly reduced until large amounts of units came onto the screen, i think we need a patch to remedy this, there rae a couple threads about it. It feels like a memory leak but its not, or, like mentioned earlier, high ping lag, but its not. I usually wait to buy a game til a few months after it hits the shelves and drops in price because of issues like this..

Thanks for the tip. I'll try the highest settings for AGP ram and report back here. I will also post my log files to see if this helps. However, i do agree the issue is onyl present on the LARGEST maps with AI present.

Ok, tried with an AGP setting of 256MB, max for my bios and still the same thing. I will post a copy of my warnings.log

    Terrific:

Why is your pagefile so small?

    Try shutting shadows off completely.

i can play doom3 or far cry with max details and highest resolution and there is no lag and runs smooth. a friend of mine tried dow out with a geforce 5900 fx and had exactly the same scrolling problem. I dont think so that it is an ati only matter

I don't know if you guys know but there was an AI bug in the beta that did the same exact, annoying thing, regardless of the setup. Maybe they havent been able to fix it in the retail?

Like I demonstrated, I get 70-80 FPS constant with shadows on, but choppiness persists. Its not a FPS problem. From what everyone is saying it seems to be an AI bug.

Can you guys try defragging please? That was one thing that apparently really helped people during the beta.

I don't have scrolling issues, it scrolls absolutely smoothly even at max detail and like 15 squads on screen (at least until the game crashes to desktop...) on xp3200+ 1 gig ram x800pro. The problem I have (besides the crashing) is that commands sometimes simply do not register. I click to build more space marines and it doesn't register my click and I have to click again.. Really annoying (and I know how to click in case you were wondering...).

I'll see your request and up you 1 complete reinstall/format & defrag for the hell of it.

Tried all three with DOW as the only game loaded after a full reinstall. Same AI problem on large maps.

I have the same kind of problem when ever i scroll it gets choppy no matter what settings i put the game and PC at the choppy game play is still there.

The only time there is no choppy scrolling is when I pause the game and scroll.

There has to be some thing wrong but what?

This sounds a lot like the same problem from the Beta with the jumpy tutorial, but I've not seen that problem in a while.

Can you guys posts some log files from http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt please?

    Shadows kills

I have all of the display options maxed. Running 1280x1024 32bit. (Except) If I turn up shadows past low I get 2FPS. I ran a skirmish with insane difficulty and got to a point where there were a gazillion units on the screen. No they weren't mine, I got my ___ kicked.

Well, i dont think there's much else we can do. Just wait for a patch. Lol, the only application installed on my fresh formatted pc is DOW and its still laggy. I'll trust in relic to have a patch ready in short order because this problem is so wide spread that its obviously not just our PC's.

How will a patch help this if the problem is not identified so they can fix it?

I'm not sure why you guys are getting the choppiness, but I do know a lot of systems don't have it.

As i've said before i get it aswell.

    Pauzing the game = smooth
    Running it = uber choppy

Geist, id say your CPU just isnt up to the task. When the game is running there are a lot of AI calculations going on, when its paused id imagine, funnily enough, things like AI, physics, scripting etc. arent running. So all the work is being done by the graphics driver.

I do notice the framerate dips when there are a lot of units onscreen doing all their animations, fighting, idle, shooting etc. but thats to be expected.

Yes thats what i concluded, the ai in this game must be taking up a crazy amount of resources. Im glad that i can upgrade soon...

My p4 2.4 ghz isnt up to the task either? Just what do you need to run this game a 3 ghz processor? I failed to see that in the recommended system specs. Also, there are other users on these froums with specs that are 1/2 that of my pc and running it smoothly.

Which is why it'd be great if we can identify the software or configuration that's causing the problem.

Can you post your graphicsconfig.log file please Terrific?

ive also had this problem and what bothers me the most is that its not in the demo , i reinstalled the DOW demo and tada! no choppyness. So the only it could possibly be is somesort of a bug or script error

Just to put my two penneth in. I have a 3000xp and a (soon to be replaced) 6800GT. Ive noticed the choppiness when scrolling too. I am using 65.76 beta drivers though. Here is my warnings.log file and my graphics.log file

what the hell is spoooge? I only have 256mb of mem on my card :argh:. I didnt have the choppiness when scrolling when in a skirmish map online, so maybe it is a fault of the AI in single player.

I think some caution is needed here though. If you guys are intent on maxing out the entire build tree with maximum space marine squads and tanks and dreadnoughts ANY system is going to get choppy. There is simply too much going on for your processor to take, even those of you with 3.8ghz pentium 4's with 6800's in.

You are simply running out of clock cycles. This game is a SKIRMISH RTS like warcraft3. Play it as such and you wont notice the lag so much. That said the choppiness is noticeable when the screen isnt so busy, so a compromise is required oh heres the graphics.log UBER.

Spooge is just the name of the graphics subsystem I think... the total memory there is also how much is allocated in main memory as well.

Can you rerun the graphicsconfig utility please? It looks like it's not been run.

Yep - SPOOGE is the graphics layer that sits on top of DirectX 9.0b. The total amount of memory it reports is "usually" your video card memory + memory configured to be AGP addressable by your AGP Aperature size. You generally want the reported amount to be x2 the amount of RAM you have on your video card, if not higher.
Please note: I am unable to reply to unsolicited PM's due to time constraints. Please post questions in the forums so that everyone can benefit.

Keep in mind, those drivers are the new beta ATI 8 drivers that came out today. Before i was using the latest cat 4.9's. I tried those new '8' drivers just to see if they would help. Unfortunatley the same problem

lol, its been set all over the place to try and fix this, from 16MB all the way to 512 nothing makes a diff.

EDIT: Just for grins i tried the MS AGP driver fix for other problems that are listed on the forum. No luck. Never tried the pause button thing tho. Sure enuff it is smooth as silk when paused and i end tasked EVERYTHING running, aside from system services. This is a bug with the AI/CPU for sure.
