Got my RAM a day early. Way to go UPS guys and girls! I ran shadows back up to high and nothing changed; very choppy. So as I said before, just gonna leave shadows in low and everything else on high.

I also saw a post or two mentioning ATA. I have a ATA 133 and have no problems from it.

At this point guys everyones pretty much agreed that its a code issue. There is either some bug in the code, or something in the code that doesnt like certain hardware/configurations. Relic is currently chasing that out and when they determine whats causing it will attempt to fix it. Since Uberjumper hasnt bothered giving us an update on it they either have not told him or told and him and hes not telling. Moot either way, so we just wait.

I figure out something... if i enable second monitor (dual view) from my video card... the chopiness in Dawn of War is no more. But i can't scroll the view with the mouse... only with the arrow keys, if i disable this second monitor the chopiness is there...
can anyone to test it ? to be sure ?

the only time it scrolls choppy for me is when shadows are on.. the higher the detail of the shadows the worst the chopiness is.
I have Athlon XP 3000+ on an Nforce 2 board, 1gig of ram, Geforce FX 5900 ultra.
I run the game with everything on high at 1280x1024 and shadows off. smooth as glass even in huge battles, A.I. or no.

I'll have to experiment with my second display (which is actually a tv) to see what happens. Disabling it didn't do anything, but I don't actually have it running in clone mode or extended desktop mode while I'm playing. It just knows its there.

Is anybody else who is experiencing the weird periodic stuttering running with a second display in any way?

In my case if I enabled the second display the game runs ok... if i disable the second display i have problems with the scroll.

Just a note.... I have a athlon 1.8 512mb ram radeon 9700 pro 128mb that has the scrolling problem
    and
a laptop 1.6ghz pentium-m centrino guy with 512mb and a radeon 9600 mobility that does not have the scrolling problem.
Being that these two setups run games almost identical (the pentium m chip seems to run a tiny bit faster then the desktop athlon chip however the 9700 obvious outperforms the 9600 mobility....) its odd that the game should be almost unplayable...(when scrolling that is) on one and not the other. I mean literally I get within 3 fps difference between the two setups on most games for the different systems. so this just furthers the has nothing to do with speed of your system theory... they are both not monster computers but judging from my experiences with every other game EVER.... (and I play a moderate amount of games) they should be performing at a very similar level. seriously is misery to play on my desktop. very bad scrolling over mountains or computer controlled troops (but not to bad with human controlled troops unless theres a whole lot of them) I vote ai issues. Granted ai should be sucking up more resources... but since its playable on one of my computers and not the other......... sorry for the messyness guys... im lazy and tired.
    peace

All right this is how I got rid of my scrolling/zooming/rotating chopping issue

    I warn you it's ridiculous.

I had my Dow patched to v1.10 and first time I experienced chopping big time was by the end of the mission4 and trough mission5, after that I stoped playing cause it was unplayable. Prior to that I didn't experience any chops not even on mission1. Ever since chopping occured even mission1 gets choppy.

I tought it was my hardware so I overclocked my 9700 but nothing imporved. So I tougth it was hardware failure and installed Unreal Turnament 2004 to check out if everything is fine with my 9700 and CPU. UT2004 run smooth on normal and high settings and that time I figured out it's DoW itself that is causing the problem.

I uninstalled DoW and installed it again but this time I didn't patch the game at all (not even 1.01)
-But the game was still choppy as hell. Even on mission1.
I uninstalled UT2004 cause I didn't need it anymore and guess what?
DoW plays without chops! Suddenly it works fine just like the first time I installed it.
Settings are on MED with exception of model detail and texture detail which are HIGH and shadows OFF. 3D camera is ON. Sound is set to LOW on both options.

This makes no sense at all!

    My computer is:
Sony Vaio VGN-A270 Notebook with Intel Centrino package
    1.8Ghz Pentium M, 1G RAM, ATi mobility 9700 64Mb
    DirectX 9.0b

I am affraid to patch the game cause chopping might occur again. For now everything seems fine, altough I experience slowdowns when scrolling over hills and buildings.
I will not be surprised if chopping occurs again suddenly.

Unbelievable that they totally ignore this thread (and others) and keep our 50.00. Thats basically stealing from us. No worries tho we can bothplay that game. I've stayed away from downloading games to support people who make great games like this but if im just going to get ripped like this in the future by a company who just ignores a large percentage of customers having a problem i'll just download relic stuff from now on. Least i know i wont get screwed out of my money . .or wait. .is that stealing? What goes around comes around.

Oh boohoo. Enjoy your ban, btw.

Edit: Before yu blame the game, let me remind you that most of the time it has something to do with YOUR OWN setup. Sounds harsh, but it's true. Most computers are VERY unpredictable, so one CAN NOT guarantee how the game will run. So far, not EVERYONE has the same problem, so it's NOT the game's fault. Stop trying to point problems at the game itself. That goes for ALL games as well.

If this community stopped playing just because the next patch doesn't resolve their issue, then I am VERY dissapointed with this community.

Well, please calm down, guys! We shouldn't argue about this topic due to this or that... I think its a huge number of users having this prob! and so i think you cannot point out their pcs as the reason... And the pre-testing of a game should always be done carefully... past has showed, that users always react critical, if a game is at first playable a year after having been bought! ..not to speak of not being playable yet!!! So please dont be disappointed of me saying that!

    My Opinion Exactly !!

I am very glad at least one other person feels the same way that I do. It is very RUDE to point the finger at your customers, and just say that their PC's are the problem, that every PC is different and unique, and for that reason just decide to blame 'Different Configurations' - like : "Sorry, but our game only works on selected hardware configurations, we did not have the time, skill, or will to test our game, or work on the damn thing until it did exactly what we wanted it to do, on almost any computer configuration".

I dont want to BAD MOUTH any company without reason. But lets take some oposition company, like..... I dont know..... Blizzard. They worked on WarCraft III for like 5 years or something, TESTING IT, and TESTING IT, and some more TESTING IT. It took forever to get it released, but was all that work worth it..... YOU BETTER BELIEVE IT. As soon as a company commits itself to excellence, the end result is software with NO, or almost NO, glitches, problems and strange issues. I am a firm believer that WarCraft III is one such game, and that Dawn Of War is not.

This issue has been brought up so many times allready, in so many different threads, and still there is no solution. No patch to fix the problem, no consistent advice for solving the problem, and seems, that there is no interest to do anything about it either. Relic has let down a whole lot of their fans because of this.

I never played the demo or beta of the game, so only found out now, that the stuttering problem was allready present there, and obviously, through my experience, that it is still present even in the final release.

Its a weird problem, found on AMD and Intel processors, with ATI or nVidia graphics cards, with or without a lot of RAM, it can happen on any motherboard - not just certain chipsets, and drivers, patches or other software does not seem to fix it.

What are we to do..... where do we turn to..... I dont know the answer to those questions, but maybe, just maybe, somebody out there does ??

    My PC Specs :

    Gigabyte nForce 2 Ultra Motherboard
    AMD Athlon XP 3200+
    KingMax 1024 MB DDR400 Memory
Seagate 120 GB SATA Hard Drive
Leadtek GeForce 6800 GT, 256 MB

PS : Sorry for the looooong post, but I had to get it all off my chest.

Btw, 1.3's coming out and here's a little tidbit for those with the scrolling problem:

    - Game performance has been improved through the use of the Intel Performance Primitives library
This means that 1.3 MAY fix the scrolling bug.
There were several other bug fixes too but they weren't mentioned yet.

Edit: 1.3 is OUT. Download it and see if it fixes your scroll bug problems.

Greets, Uberjumper, Totmacher, and all. Firstly, I thank you, Relic, for making such a joy of a game. I, too, am in the "stuttering framerates on a high-end system and can't figure out how to fix it" group. However, I was thoroughly impressed with sound, visuals, and gamplay experienced before the stutter became pretty much routine with every single player and replay-viewing session of DoW. Even the intro movie ceases to play smoothly, now.
Anywho, I hadn't seen anyone post on this thread if the 1.3 patch fixed anything for them, so I figured I'd go ahead.
I have WinXP Pro SP2, Pentium 4 3.6Ghz. 2Gigs DDR2 PC4200, Geforce Go 6800, and DirectX 9.0c. Replay-viewing, single-player 1v1 on Blood river versus computer on standard AI difficulty, and the intro movie all still stutter on my system, after installing the 1.3 patch. Stutter still persists after after adjusting settings (resolution lowering/raising, shadows off, sound set to low, etc.). That extra gig of RAM made no diff. (damn, shoulda read more posts before shelling out that $140). Pretty much the same situation I've read many times over from posters on this thread and the like. Here go the logs:

A damn shame, this problem is. Game would easily be worth every penny I paid, if it would just run the way it should on my hardware, which is far beyond the recommended specs. Maybe I'll find someone who owns a system that does not experience this problem and just buy that whole system from them. Will probably cost less money than my current rig. I'm supposing the issue was not fixed with 1.3, but has it cleared up for anyone else?

    Cheers,

I have experienced a slightly different variation of this problem. My game was running great untill recently when I did an upgrade to my hardware. I was running on a P4 2.4 non hyper threading 1.5Gigs PC2100 ram and Nvidia FX 5600 256mb ram. I put in a P4 3.0 w/Hyper threading, same video card, 2Gigs PC3200 and flashed the bios to enable support for the new processor. I had no scrolling or sound issues untill I did the upgrade. After that the game was pretty choppy, almost unplayable, certianly very annoying. I then went and upgraded to Dx9.0c and got the latest drives for my video card and sound card. It did seem to help a little but, as it has been the case for others with this problem it still gets choppy when alot of enemies are on the screen, which was not the case with my slower hardware. That would tend to suggest that this is not a hardware speed issue.

Is there a way to disable hyperthreading? I'd be interested in seeing what happens when you do that.

I've yet to see the scrolling issue :-/

Is there a way to disable hyperthreading?
In my case, and in most cases I imagine, its done through the BIOS. However, if hyper-threading was enabled prior to installing your OS, you may have to re-install to get it to run without hyperthreading. That's what I had to do. I tried it because I remember reading a previous post from someone claiming that disabling hyperthreading fixed the choppiness issue on his PC. I formatted, re-installed, and ran Windows XP SP2 without hyper-threading, but sadly the choppiness problem is still in full effect whenever I play DoW 1.x.

Backsmackes, your case seems to smack of the same pattern we keep seeing. Get more powerful hardware, get choppiness. Some code routine in DoW just doesn't seem to like certain hardware configs.

    My system specs are:

    ATI Radeon X800+ Pro
    512MB RAM
    AMD Athlon 2800+

I have the same problem as stated on the first page of this thread. 1.3 did nothing to help it.

Well I disabled the hyper threading and now the game runs perfect(zero choppiness). kinda bitter sweet though, since The upgrade was largely for the hyper threading technology in the first place. On the bright side, all my drivers are up to date now.

Hi guys, I've been having the same troubles recently, but turning off hyperthreading did fix it right up.

Just thought I'd add another way to temporarily disable the hyperthreading technology without fiddling around in bios and stuff.

Execute w40k.exe, and then in the main menu press ctrl-alt-delete.

Go to the processes tab and find w40k.exe. Right click it and select "Set Affinity...".

In the following screen make sure CPU0 is enabled and CPU1 is disabled.

You will need to do this every time you play, but it really only takes 15 seconds, so its what I would rather do than disabling HT completely.

Hope this helps a few people.

...and what about AMD-users?! Is your suggestion also available for then? Or is CPU0/CPU1 just referring to HT-capability?!

Pretty sure AMD doesnt have the Affinity option since it doesnt use HT technology.

Fiction Solution or "End of A Crusade"

Hi, I just joined the forum. I joined because I'm having the same type of game/intro movie/audio problem. I am pretty experienced with solving these types of issues, but what you have here is a problem concerning motherboards.
I run an older Dell Dimension 4500 P4 2ghz without the Hyperthreading Technology and I have the same problems as the AMD users, concerning the all around audio bugs and chop throughout the game. Now, everybody knows that no two motherboards are alike. Some are designed for gaming and some weren't. Some have integrated sound, video, or expandability features that are hardwired and cannot be modified by anyone with less-than-capable engineering skills.

When I bought my Dell I got it for the numbers, rather than investigating those so called "gaming rigs" and why they cost so much more for what was basically the same CPU speed, RAM memory space, AGP over PCI for video, etc. Basically I was deluding myself into thinking that the big numbers were all that mattered. Later, I came to realize that it's the design and quality of the components that make the price bubble in those true bad-ass systems like Alienware or Falcon.

I also tune cars and if it makes it easier, look at it like this. Think about buying a Chevy Lumina with a V6, or a Nissan Z with a V6. Both have same size engine and both can have auto-trans, but you end up paying 3 times as much for the Z because it's a wholly better car. Those two facts yes, are major, but are still only a drop in the bucket. You could add a turbocharger to the Lumina, but it would be a waste. You could do it to the Z, and it would be art. The same goes for Video Cards, you see. It doesn't matter how much RAM, how many Ghz, or how hard you overclock if your system isn't designed to work in harmony with it.

The only way I can see to fix the issue so that it works for everyone is to have OpenGL video support and audio that doesn't require Direct X because, frankly, the audio on my oooooold AMD K6 300mhz sounds just as good as what I have now, and those games never even heard of Direct X.

So that's it, folks. You can either put on your smart goggles and fish through miles of specs to pinpoint the exact location of the discrepency only to find that you have no other option than to get a new high performance gaming motherboard with none of the integrated crap and 5-6 PCI slots because you're getting a PCI sound board too. You will transfer whatever you can as far as hardware and RAM if compatible (you cheapskate), then do a clean install from a freshly formatted and updated system. It'll cost you between 100-150 bucks if you keep your processor, RAM, Drives, Video and PCI cards. You'll love it too because there's nothing quite like the feel of something new (according to Trent Reznor and myself). I hope this brings some closure to those who've been longing for it. Happy Fraggin'

Does your motherboard have any integrated sound, video, CNR slots? The problem may be as little as a faulty or underpowered capacitor. The point is that all information passes through your board, and if it just doesn't work well it may not deal with the types of processes that DoW calls for. The game will still run so long as the init check passes. Trust me, I've tried every trick in the book to fix this problem. If your system is already killer, then i would recommend trying a new board, as you can basically swap everything over. If it works, your prayers are answered! If not, then you can probably return it for a slight restock fee to the online dealer... that is if the board didn't arrive broken, then they waive the fee on returns.

I think one thing that would help this issue alot is if people on the low-end of technology, who run the game flawlessly, start posting their specs. Things like sound board type, AGP speeds, Hyperthreading, etc... will help in pinpointing exactly what process is causing our beloved game to look and sound like crap, and hopefully give the developers an idea of how to make a workaround patch, if possible. It would really be a shame to let it go, because game stability is one of the biggest concerns these days with both consumers and producers. Anyways, it looks like I've been going on and on again, so I'm out! Good luck and frag on!

    Hey
i get no chopyness wat so ever and my pc isnt that great. here r my specs.

Motherboard: ASUS A7V333 (pretty old one)
    amd 1.5 ghz
    512 ram/ddr
    radeon pro 9000
    C3DX PCI Audio device

It runs great compared to what other people r talking about.
I only get a very slight chopyness wen something is building but apart from that is runs great.

Thanx 4 the post, Brutalman! I hope that encourages others to post their specs, and if possible say what model of motherboard you have. We may be able to narrow it down to a specific handful of them that have trouble with DoW. I imagine it would be nice to have the game bug-free when the expansion releases... one can only hope!

    No probs
if any1 else would want to post there specs and dont know how 2 find them go 2 system information and everything should be there.

If u cant find it (which u most likely can) try looking in the bios or hardware manager.

I also have this problem. Only for me it affects all animations too, but to a lesser extent. The frustrating thing is I get periods of smooth running, but there are bursts of choppiness in animations and scrolling. I don't recall having this problem before patch 1.3 came out though. I posted about this earlier as well...

@Ravnos_13: It don't agree with you 100%! Why the hell do you think especially DoW would demand that special performance, no other even higher performance needing game does not?!
I think its due to some bad programming!!!
    Sorry, just my opinion!

My system handles Battlefield 2 gloriously, and all my other games without as much as a stutter. Ever since I bought DoW, I've had the problem discussed in this thread. I have made a thread about the problem and discussed the problem in other threads. Nothing has fixed it, made it better, and it so far has not been acknowledged (to my knowledge) by any high-level devs.

I've noticed no choppiness in demo. and thats the most strange thing. I have radeon 9800pro and A2000+.

Heh, I think this problem affects everyone. And if people only recall this happening in 1.3 , then it's the patch.

OK, I've read like 8 pages of this thread and had enough - as I can see here the problem still hasn't been resolved. So to add my three cents:

I'm playing on Athlon 64 3000+ with 1GB of RAM and Gigabyte Geforce 6600 - noticeable chopiness, regardless of detail level and color depth.

And now for the fun part - earlier I played with the same config but older Radeon 9200 and it was perfectly fine, only I had to run in 16-bit color depth because of low framerate in 32-bit. But even then it wasn't the chopiness I'm experiencing now. Oh, and I experience it even with unpatched game, so it's not the 1.3 patch.

    So we have:
    1) Some time ago the game ran without any chopiness at all.
    2) I changed absolutely nothing im my computer except for the graphics card, and I mean absolutely nothing.
    3) Dawn of War was almost the first thing I ran on the new card and guess what - chopiness. You can imagine I didn't like it at all.

Now what could be the problem? Sound card? Or maybe motherboard? Not enough RAM? Antivirus? Firewall?

    Or maybe...
    Just maybe...

The problem lies with the graphic card, or more specifically the way the game uses it? I haven't been experimenting with drivers, only tried like 2 or 3 versions. So it may also be the driver problem. But as it happens with both nVidia and ATI cards I don't believe that.

Oh, and I'm still not happy at all.
And sorry if I sound offensive and/or the thing I mentioned was already pointed out on one of the 9 pages I haven't read. That was not my intent.

What's the visual difference between x16 and x32 after your resolution? Because you get a H U G E performance boost if you switch from 32 to 16.

Please let's try to solve the problem... the difference between 16 and 32-bit colour-depth should be well known by everyone... don't you agree?!
BUT only fyi, 16-bits result in non-smooth colour-cross-overs... What do you think
