The best players of all time

ok since its quiet round here, i thought i'd start a thread that I know ppl can't help reply to.

Its been two years of Homeworld, and I want ppl to nominate who were the best players they have seen, heard of and played against. Give reasons too plz.

    My nominations go to:

SirMolle - For sheer inventiveness, Molle gets my vote. He loses alot of games, but has always had a unique ability to break that "unbeatable" strat and turn the trend of gameplay on its head. Molle taught me how to think laterally - nobody else could say "why dont you try going 7/0?" and actually mean it.

fORNAX - Never cared about the map, never cared about the settings, this guy just got in your game and won. I'll never forget playing a 2v2 against fORNAX and his newbie partner who got killed straight away. He took on two skilled players and quietly went about his business, owning both of us. I was ranked at number two for over a month & only got top spot when he went and joined the army. God help us if we go to war with Korea.

frstkor13 - The guy taught me how to play and was always better than me from the start. HATES losing with a passion and never does, not even in muck about games. Not a swarmer by trade, and not a frigger by trade - frst always plays the opponent with the best strat he can think of to beat them.

    Feel the love, ppl.

echo : best def swarmer i ever played and he was very trikkee with salvs
yellowdragon : cheat0ring dolt always killed me =\

[edit] due to dolts on irc critisising me, these ppl i mentioned are the best ppl i know and played. notice i said echo was best def swarmer i have played, did not say he was THE best. [/edit]

    Hrmm, best play0rs.

Dukachu : I have beaten Molle but i never beat Duky, any map, any time and you gotta love those "weird settings" games.

Molle : Forced me to get good by beating me far too much.

Frstfool : I taught him everything he knows about claws.

ps. YOU ARE NOT INCOGNITO DOLT. WE ARE WATCHING YOU

PreyOnU - My nemesis for such a long time, I think my best hw moment was managing to finally beat him on subjugate. At a time when all ladder was subjugate he was one of the few all round players who was just as happy with caps on a large map as with a fast fighter swarm on small maps.

Grimm - This guy had (and still has) so much natural skill at hw, he created the defender swarm, a strat that lasted for 6 months. A clan whore and an original smurfer he still scares me when I play with him even though he has been away from hw for such a long time.

SirMolle - For sheer perserverance and strategy. I remember when he was a newbie and an easy kill, I never thought he'd get to the top of the ladder but he kept playing and learning and it didn't take long for him to get to the top 10. Then he just kept going, moving on from learning to innovating till he beat JoeTheShmo and became the hw legend that he is today. Molle shows us that it's not just natural ownage skills that count. Like reki said, he comes up with a lot of odd strats (hyper col attack on subjugate?) but the thing is that he makes a lot of them work.

All of these people have the magic, the ability to make almost any strat look unbeatable and to snatch victory from you even when you are convinced you have them owned.

I rewrote this at least 5 times before I decided to stick with what I'm writing now. There are so many people that I have in a group in my head titled "the greatest". I don't have an "ever" after because I have not been playing Homeworld online since it came out. But since I have been playing here are the people I have listed in my head in alphabetical order. I'm sorry for the length of this but I'm not capable of breaking it down to 3 or 4 people. I'm going to include in this list certain assholes that we, or a lot of us, dislike, but they have great skill on the Homeworld field nonetheless.

Apollo - I remember thinking that maybe I could someday join SLS if I was good enough ever. APOLLO was the leader and a pretty popular guy on WON when I first started playin... He's been an expert since I've started playing and continues to be one even as we have become good friends over the past year. Incredible team player whom I don't get to play with enough. Ladder HoF'er.

BloodLord - a good friend of mine with a good sense of humor, he somehow blossomed during august 00 and has gotten better ever since then. I remember the first game I played vs him it was a ladder on radial and I had never heard of him. I forget what name he was using at that time, some wierd islander name no doubt. but I remember thinking I might like to get to know the dolt. #1 on ladder achieved.

Chewy - well this idiot is actually a friend of mine, but he's still an idiot. He got a mix of natural talent, brains, and magic. I'm not sure why hes good or why hes on my list, but he is. I wish he was playing more these days cause I'd love to pound on him but he neither plays, or playes me when he does. HEH.

Devlin - In the same group as Hive and RIP, I've been told he was the greatest ever. As in, the greatest. I'll take my friends words for it. #1 on ladder achieved.

DK - bah as much as everyone hates this little faget, hes still good at homeworld. He would crap his pants if he heard me say this I'm betting because he was always trying to make me think he deserved a spot in my list of who was great. I never gave him the satisfaction of telling him he was good because he is such a prick. But alas, he is good, has god given talent along with a horrible dirty mouth. His talent came with echo's as they live very close to each other irl and their skills grew together. A most lucky setup, much like Griff and Bloodz. Anyways, faget, but good at Homeworld.

downslope - I've watched this kid work his ass off for the past 6 months, and he is the current #1 on the ladder. No small feat. He's hounded talas more than maybe anyone I've ever seen. Could use some work on subj though. Most fun to be around, takes lots of jokes and gives alot too, a great sense of humor. The kind of guy you want around when your in a shitty mood cause he'll let you flame him to relieve stress. All around nice guy. #1 on ladder achieved.

dukath - how can someone whom you know is going to go grav, beat you? Record a game with this guy and you will surely have your answer. Very good caps player obviously but I think if he did not have a reputation to uphold as the "gravwell man" he could outswarm the best of them. Very smart player. Ladder HoF'er.

EchO - His proximity to DK irl helped make him very good at Homeworld, they could both learn from each other. Their skills rubbed off, but unfortunately alot of their attitudes and asshole tendancies wore off on each other also. God given talent and smarts here. #1 on ladder achieved.

eclipse - he also kind of blossomed in front of my eyes. Started on radial and moved to the other maps. Seems to have lots of god given talent and perserverance, worked to get his spot in this list and well deserving of it imo. #1 on ladder achieved.

fornax - I didn't know him as well as the better english speaking lads but he sure seemed to be a nice guy. Would play any map, any settings, and beat you, like reki has said. Incredible frig player, but could do everything and make it lethal. #1 on ladder achieved.

Frisky - Ah, I've not gotten to play as many games with, or against this dolt as I've wanted to, but hes well deserving of the title "greatest ever". He is most unplayable on subj. I have a recording of him beating two SOG (they were a halfway decent clan about a year ago) on subjugate in a 2v1. Swamred em both to death. #1 on ladder achieved.

Griffin - well, I dont know Griff very well, not as well as I know Bloodz, but he is just good. Just good. And if you played Blood then know that what he knows, came mostly from Griff. He's a helluva team player. Ladder HoF'er.

Grimm/Lucifer/sneakykitty/tarantula/fatsweatybetty ect - I attribute his place here to luck. Oh, and shitloads of god given talent and huge gaming smarts. I didn't get to pound him enough before he stopped playing to be satisfied. I hope he comes back so I can resume. #1 on ladder achieved.

Hivemind - He was on his way out when i was on my way in so I don' know him well, but have seen recordings. And everyone who knew him who is on my list, has him on theirs, which is well beyond good enough reason for me to put him up here. Invented the modern swarm. GG #1 on ladder achieved.

Jason - nice guy, raw talent, raw skill, raw smarts, gg. Ladder HoF'er.

JoetheShmo - Dont know him well, only know of him and seen recordings, played a very few against him. He liked his hosting, liked his small bounties, and liked his subjugate. He always used defenders and I get the feeling hes around someplace. hmmm. Check ladder for his +72 streak. #1 on ladder achieved.

Kalessin - hmm, well alot of these guys it seems are people I would call friends, kal is just good. I don't know exactly what to say except for he is just good. The type of player who is smart and could be just good at anything he wanted. Hard worker and fun guy to be around. Has slight eating disorder. #1 on ladder achieved.

Kamel - The crusader from spain! One heck of a nice guy who worked to make the ladder a better place by hosting tons of tournies before he had to leave. An awesome frig player who can play any map, do anything. Very hard worker from what I saw, but I never knew him well. #1 on ladder achieved.

LordRule - I've watched him since June 00 improve bit by bit little by little. Worked his ass off to get to #1 and when he got to #2 his HD blew and he fell down. Discouraged and feeling down, he broke his HW cd. I would like to break him for it cause I feel like he's throwing something that he built away. Lordy if your reading this, wake up and take that #1 spot you deserve. Ladder HoF'er. [edit] #1 on ladder achived =) [/edit]

Mecha - bah I was going to try and avoid putting this jerk up here but I am forced to. He's just good. I wish he would die and take his imperialism with him but that doesn't change the fact that he was good enough to take #1 if he felt like it. Doesn't play much now I guess. Ladder HoF'er.

Metho - ah my buddy meth. He hates 99.9% of all non standard maps but he could own you on them anyways. A strat hounder who is essential in our FL labs games, he will work numbers with the best of them and find ways through anything. Above his hard earned skill, hes a hell of a nice guy and great community supporter. ps. don't ever think you have him beat until his MS explodes. Shoulda been #1. Ladder HoF'er.

Molle - another good friend. I first remember him when I began playing Homeworld online around April 00, he was in RBA (snicker). I didnt know him well when he turned into a lethal killer but I remember not liking his NHC ass at one point. Man did I have him wrong. Hes as fun as they come, teaching eT swedish on bcom is priceless. On Homeworld he is magic. Playing in dolt ffa's to FL labs, his creativity is neverending. If you beat him once, then your in deep shit and hes going to pound on you till you beg for mercy. I think he is the greatest Homeworld player ever. Multiple ladder #1.

Mouse - Kinda the same as frisky, I've not gotten to play with him as much as I would like, but his subjugate skill is astounding. Nice guy with great skill. #1 on ladder achieved.

PreyonU/RIP - Like Hive, I was on my way in when he kinda went away. He's also on this list for the same reasons as Hive, because everyone whom I know, who knew him, says he was a badass. He's in a catagory with Hive and Devlin. I hear his micromanagement skills in a swarm were untouchable. #1 on ladder achieved.

Protos - others may not know him as well but I can tell you that he is as good as anyone else on this list on radial. Hes a drunken fun loving aussie whom doesn't play too much which is maybe why he keeps it kinda simple. But on radial... damn good, also on talas. Very smart player.

pyro/setzer - hes a retard but a funny one. Kinda a perv, but kinda a magician. Has a way of surprising you with something out of the ordinary just when you think hes going to use his perfection in basic strats. I get the impression hes gone, but then he comes back and obviously was never gone at all cause hes still damn good. Ladder HoF'er.

Reaper/Beltemall - a wealth of knowledge on homeworld numbers and strats. A tactical genius. Multiple #1's on the ladder under OMO and BM names. He helped me quite a bit several times on battlecom over a year ago. I just sat there with my mouth wide as he spit out numbers like I had never seen before. I thought he was obsessed! Very hard worker and nice guy all around, geniunily wants to help other players improve. Multiple ladder #1.

reki - We grew up together. If it wasnt for reki I would suck at HW I thinks. His talent made anything I have better. In a class outside of the rest here personally, his talent on the field comes from tons of hard work and FL labs games. I could ramble about him but you might think i was a fag so I'll stfu. ps marry me. #1 on ladder achieved.

ridock - He was a complete newbie around the end of november 00' but he is the quickest learning pornstar I've ever seen. Assisted and taken in by Savage, another great, he was on his way. He has more brains in his left earlobe than most players have in their whole bodies. Very inventive and OMG he doesn't give up. Maybe he takes after meth, but I'm telling you do not count him out of a game until you see his MS blow. I love him.

Savage/Valentine - this bish was someone I couldn't stand when about a year ago at this time. BM founder, nuff said. If you knew the Bowel Movements then you know that hes special. Kalessin once told me "he could be top 10 whenever he wants." and I know this is true. He's a very very smart gamer, he doesnt necc need to know the perfect build or research or hav order to somehow pull out a win. He just plays damn smart. Ladder HoF'er.

skibb - He was one of the first people I fell in love with online. He tried to tell me he was 37 too. HA Anyways, he just happens to have oodles of god given talent and the ability to make me laugh without trying. Skibb and I have played over 125 2v2 games with each other in the past 16 months, lost 2. "Bro's N Arms". I love him even though i wasnt on his greatest list. =[ #1 on ladder achieved.

Anyhow, I've obviously got enough names in my head to forget a few as well. There are tons of guys whom I would love to put up here that are great friends and very skilled HW'ers but not the #1 on ladder types. And of course there are people that I have not listed that are the #1 on ladder types. The up and comers, the guys who I might edit this for in the next couple months. ect.

    ono this was too long.

Reading that makes me realize just how many people i DONT know

I have only been playing for about 3 months. In that time I have played some of the FLers, who are all extremely talented and who all have a good sense of humor (except skibb ). The only FL I have played regurlarly would be Banshee, and he is, in my opinion one of the best players that I have had the pleasure of beating

Also, Archangel is a talented player. He's a fagit, but a good player. Never hesistated to kick my ass and never hesitated to let it be known that he HATES losing =/

hmm... dang, thats all I can come up with. I gotta start playing more games on WON =/

Devlin was very very good indeed. He was sitting at the top of the ladder when Homeworld was at the hight of its popularity and just kind of stayed there.....
I was fortunate enough to play him once and learned quite a lot, I also learned that a combination of feild frigates and minelayers could cause untold grief even if it did not help you win. I managed to hold out ooh.. a good 45 minutes in a subjegate 1v1.

Well come on, I have just beaten the no 4 and no 12 on CASES in a 2v2 allied with Ressev and wanted to know what would happen if I played the no 1 :P
I learned WHY he was no 1

    ...

I agree with frstkor13 that Kamel was indeed a very nice guy to play with.
I remember a series of games I played vs Kamel when he was something around n°2-3 in the ladder. It was good fun. I had not played for a very long time nor been around in the community so I didn't know him at the time. I remeber I tried a new strat (which I obviously didn't master) for our first match and he seriously whooped my ass in around 20 mins. Then he nicely agreed on a rematch and this time I did something more well known and although I was as rusty as grand'pa's tractor, I managed to keep him busy for something like 50 mins. I was quite depressed at the time telling to myself that I had become hopeless for not playing the game enough, and I apologized to him for not being a good fight... until he gently told me I was doing quite good and also told me where he was in the ladder... Curiously, I felt reassured after this.

Another name that comes to mind, although he's not known for being a ladder player is Calaban. I never played him in HW, but I played him in Cataclysm twice: these were amongst my first games of Cata online.
We played this map with a lot of slipgates (which btw he taught me how to use...) and that I can't remember the name right now.
Our second game (I lost the first one miserably) was a very good game, tense and with a lot of extraordinary maneuvers from both sides, with clever use of slipgates and very well-thought maneuvers. Too bad that Won froze at the final battle in which I found myself in a winning position but completely unable to send a single order to my ships. A shame that Cata recording feature didn't work.
Cal is a great guy to play with and has alot of ideas, very innovative and open minded. He loves to try new strats and revive interest in units that noone believes in. I remember he was the sparkling that revived the light corvette at a time when almost everybody thought this ship was hopeless. Do I also need to remind he was one of the biggest animators of these strategy forums... His contributions to the strategies that everybody uses right now are really impressive.

Hands down it has to be Vinnie because no one else always had cloaked Destroyers in reserve.

Iam just going to name some names, ppl I had played with that prolly wouldn't mean much to the younger folk here.

Hydroxide: the original ladder smurf, just to prove a point (which he did)
Katkiller: when corv walls were king
    Stripe7: "pheer my scouts"
Hivemind: only because i could never get him to say "I" (well i did once but he'd never admit it)
BuckRodgers: used to be unbeatable on caps
Apollo: still think of you as a GOD
Bing: getting a viable def frig counter on subj when Hive started swarming

I would prolly name others but because of roo time I never got to play much with other "stars" of my time. Molle was just coming onto the scene when I started to drift away form it, yet he and Shin still gave me one of the most memorable games I have played in a 3 way ffa.

best? you mean as in pimping one's brownnose or do you want objectivity?

Hi. I'd like to nominate Frstkor13. period. end it.

Everyone knows i hate him, but at least he's the bestest...bar none. even "sirmolle" (uhm...what's his name now?) and dukath aren't even close. (as for hivemind? uhm....dunno. i never really met him, so i can't say; maybe Dyntheos isn't smokin crack, but i doubt vinnie did more than molest children)

    GG HW LEGENDS!

OK HERE ARE MY ALL TIME HW HEROS!
(BTW I HAVE PERMISSION TO USE ALL CAPS,I ASKED IN ADVANCE SO DONT BAN ME AGAIN PLZ )

OK I GOT THIS WONDERFUL GAME ON DAY OF RELEASE BACK IN OCT '99.....HERES MY STORY AND FINDINGS

    NEWBIE DAYS
WERE SPENT AIMLESSLY DRIFTING FROM GAME TO GAME,FLAMING AND ANNOYING AS MANY PPL AS POSSIBLE WITH MY CAPS ONLY STYLE OF TYPING,THEN.....WHEN 1 GAME I WAS LEFT IN A 2V1 SITUATION WITH MARAUDER(SP) AND ANOTHER SP WHOSE NAME I DONT RECALL (SORRY)....THEY WERE IMPRESSED WITH MY DETERMINATION AND SO I JOINED

    SOLARIS PULSARE
I DONT REALLY REMEMBER BEING TOO IMPRESSED BY ANYONE AT THIS STAGE EXCEPT 2 FELLOWS WHO WENT BY THE NAME OF ONI AND NEKO . I DONT KNOW WHAT THEY WERE TAKING BUT TO ME THEY WERE IN A WHOLE DIFFERENT LEVEL COMPARED TO EVERYONE ELSE..NOT MUCH TO SAY CEPT HI GUARRAND(SP) AND THE (SP) SLOWLY SPLIT UP SO I NEXT ENDED UP IN....

    AOK!
THIS TO ME WAS MY HITTING THE BIG TIME IN TERMS OF HW CLANS.I NEARLY DIDNT MAKE IT HOWEVER AS VINNIE-AOK (HW'S MOST HATED PLAYER AT THE TIME) FELT I WOULD DAMAGE HIS CLANS REPUTATION :O CHEEKY HUH......ANYWAY DURING MY TIME IN AOK I GOT INVOLVED IN A HEATED WAR WITH MY OWN CLANMATE AND NOW ONE OF MY BEST FRIENDS ZEPPLIN-AOK ...MORE TO THE POINT I ALSO BECAME VERY IMPRESSED WITH 4 PLAYERS IN THE CLAN WHO USED THE NAMES VINNIE,JOETHESHMO,KALESSIN AND BELTEMALL . I WISHED I WAS HALF AS GOOD AS THESE GUYS!!AOK DISSOLVED SORTA ,NEXT PORT OF CALL WAS....

    GURU!!!!
NOW THIS TO ME WAS THE GOLDEN ERA OF HW.......GOOD TIMES......GOOD GAMES AND BEST OF ALL.......GOOD FRIENDS.
I REMEMBER CHEWY ASKING ME TO JOIN GURU WHEN IT WAS STILL SMALL AND I JUMPED AT THE CHANCE.NOT LONG AFTER JOININ I REMEMBER CHEWY SAYIN TO ME "GAZ....I WANT U TO HELP ME TAKE OVER WON WITH GURU" SO WITH THAT WE AND GUTS SET OUT ON OUR INFAMOUS RECRUITMENT DRIVE WHERE WE PRETTY MUCH NABBED ANYONE SKILLED OR WITH POTENTIAL....ONE DAY WHILE PLAYING LADDER I CAME ACROSS A CERTAIN MR FRISKYJIM WE HAD A GOOD CLOSE FOUGHT GAME WHICH SURPRISINGLY I WON :O SO BASICALLY I ASKED HIM TO JOIN GURU AND HE ACCEPTED! OTHER PLAYERS WHO ALSO REALLY IMPRESSED ME AT THIS PERIOD IN TIME WERE MOUSE ,SKIBB AND DK WHO WERE GETTING VERY GOOD.....VERY FAST AND OF COURSE CHEWY WAS ALWAYS COMING UP WITH NEW TWEAKS AND TRICKS TO THE GAME! IT WAS DURING THIS ERA THAT I ALSO FOUND OUT THAT ATTRITION AOK HAD MUTATED INTO A AZZ KICKIN MACHINE GOING BY THE NAME OF MECHACHICKEN ! I REMEMBER HIM AND THE MIGHTY HW GOD MOLLE FORMING A 2V2 ALLIANCE IN THE GURU V CC WAR AND THOSE 2 COMBINED SCARED ME MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE...EVER.....IN MY LIFE!

AFTER GURU WENT.......WELL HAYWIRE WITHOUT CHEWY AROUND I ENDED UP IN

    BIB
THE BEST IN BRITAIN CLAN......BY THIS TIME(APPROX A YR AGO TODAY) ID SEEN PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING THERE WAS TO SEE AND FRANKLY WAS NOT IMPRESSED WITH HW THAT MUCH ANYMORE....HOWEVER A FEW PLAYERS CAUGHT MY ATTENTION.
ECHO I HAD KNOWN FOR A WHILE AND HE WAS ALWAYS GOOD.....BUT AROUND THIS TIME,TO ME ANYWAY,HE JUST SEEMED REAL GOOD! I REMEMBER HIM SMURFING AND NEARLY BEATING ME AND WICKSYBIB IN A 2V1 HANDICAP MATCH.
THE OTHER PLAYER I THOUGHT WAS A GOD AT THIS TIME WAS

BY THIS TIME I WAS PRETTY MUCH FED UP OF HW AND AFTER LEAVING BIB AND JOININ SLS FOR A BRIEF PERIOD OF ABOUT 2 MONTHS I QUIT PLAYING REGULARLY.

THE FOLLOWING PLAYERS I ALSO CONSIDER TO BE THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME BUT I HAVE NOT PLACED INTO A TIME BRACKET FOR VARIOUS REASONS....EG THEY HAVE ALWAYS KICKED ASS OR I COULD NOT REMEMBER WHICH ERA THEY BELONGED TO:

    APOLLO,FRSTKOR13,GRIMM,HIVEMIND,KAMEL,PREYONU AND PYROMONGER

I HOLD ALL THE ABOVE NAMED PLAYERS IN THE UTMOST REGARD.....YOU HAVE, NOW AND FOR ALWAYS,MY HIGHEST RESPECTS.

I think I should put my two cents into this thread...

I been around for along time and for some reason I managed to get good along the line (Im not mentioning my 1200 ladder games or aboout 6500 overall WON games as a reason).

The thing about me is that Im competative as h*ll and stubborn at that. If i get beat i refuse to give up and MUST beat (prefferably humiliate) the guy who beat me at his own turf.

I have been beating my head against the wall a ton of times trying to figure out how to beat various guys...

My first great nemesis was Kalessin, this guy is an overall great guy and also my first ever mentor. There isn't one single aspect of the game he doesnt excel at. Kal has a way of tricking you and you never know what he is up to. He will fool you and go the other way or lure you out where you definatly don't want to be. Thanks Kal!

On my strive to climb the ladder i encountered a lot of decent and good players.. but this is the greats so i won't waste your time with telling you about every single one of them.

Kamel-FSS... I beat my head against this guy forever.. i tried hitting him with swarm, i tried hitting him with caps, I tried hitting him with my frigging mouse. Nothing worked. No matter what map, what strat, he always came up with the winning hand. Kamel is a micromaster and uses caps with ave. I think it took me 1½ month to finally beat him and when I did, I think I cheered for two weeks... phew.

MechaChiken, master probe bomber, master swarmer. Tactical master. Positions his forces like a true master. Also a brilliant armchair stratguy. Me, Kal and Mecha have dissected all the strats out there to semipieces and smaller pieces to see what we can do with it. Mecha u dolt... lazy sod! This guys could have owned the ladder if he just hadn't been so darn lazy.

JoeTheShmoSLS... the battles between me and Joe was numerous and always tense. That is, after i became good, before that Joe just smacked me like a fly on the wall and continued. Joe is verymuch known as one-strat-one-map guy, but oh so well he did that strat and map. This was THE guy to beat.

beltemall/ReaperBM/GrumpyOMO.. a player much like me. He analyses the crap out og the game and counts every second. There isnt one number of stats he cannot pluck out of his mind. I specifically remember a two hour Subj battle with him in which he commented near the end "wow, your'e much better then i thought". Damn i was proud....! This guy is truly one of the greats!

RipBM/JudgeIto/PreyOnU.. old school great... jebus. I never ever in my life thought i'd beat the guy. But I did... ONCE. Bah. Never saw enough on him to play more then perhaps 20 games against him. Toughest cookie i seen. He used to annoy the crap out of you by bringing out 2 salvs out of nowhere and go steal your colls as you were bashin it out. I have no idea how he pulled it off with salvs still alive, but for some reason he did..

This is my list. These are the former greats and NOT todays greats. Apart from these i have seen skilled and very skilled come and go by the hundreds, some very skilled.... I could make this list 5 pages to describe each and every one of them but this will have to suffice for now.

gg guys, may the probe be with you

My nominees for ALL TIME best HW players are:

[414]Quaker: i never could get a grip on any strat he used..

Manus: He ruled in HW and also in the short time he was on Cata

SoulBlighter_DD: Fawker always won in teamgames against me and my fellow SP clan m8's

PreyOnU: Only managed to beat him once in dozens of games

InfinityChiken: Although he never reached #1 status, i bet he could have if he had tried. He teached me the ins and outs of HW.

Beltemal: I saw him enter HW, we played togheter in the same clan/armada and then he outgrew all of us. A real natural!!

That concludes the votes from this jury.

    my list

I don't often get an opportunity to play top players. This is a short list of some players that I have played against and that consistently own me very hard. Playing them is like hitting a brick wall over and over:

    MechaChiken, Friskyguru, CptUnreal, Molle|FL

Mecha's my inspiration and he still gives me constant advice and support.

Finally, my #1 spot goes to the player that's consistently owned me very very hard skibb|FL . A game against him is normally over very quickly.

    My picks

It was hard to make my pick. I limited it to my top 10 players. Many other people are right there and I could have easily picked 10 more. Originally I thought I would split my list between ladder and non-ladder play. There are some really great ladder players who never played much on bigger maps, or in team games. Then there were guys who never really played much ladder but excelled on the bigger maps. The style of play is so different that there are not many guys who can do it all. Finally I decided to do one list with comments. Its a little bit long winded but I hope some people might be interested. The names are in roughly chronological order. (I haven't been playing much for a while and there a whole crop of really good players active in the ladder now that I don't know so well so my picks are from the period up to Spring 2001).

    Devlin

Devlin was getting ready to retire when I started playing. I was a hopeless n00bie who never really gave him a run for his money but I really liked playing him and watching his recordings because he was just a brilliant player. He played different strats with equal skill. He had a website for a while where he posted his games and some analysis and was one of those players who tried to give something back to the community 'cos he loved the game. He developed a lot of tactics in fighter formations and positioning that everybody takes for granted today.

    Grimm/Lucifer

{IB}Grimm started playing ladder around the same time I did at the start of 2000 but he advanced much faster than anybody else. He crushed everybody after a while. His swarm micro in ladder games was great. He really developed Anti-Swarm Swarm and had a corvette fetish. He used salvettes for a while to force his opponents to attack and get their swarm out of position. He was also at home playing cap strats on larger maps. He was so precise and consistent I used to study his games to learn how to play better. At his best he was unbeatable. He retired for a while and came back in April/May 2000 as Lucifer/Scorpion and didn't get back to his old peak; thats when he took some losses but back at the time he made ladder #1 I swear none of us could touch him. He was one of those #1's who would be on every day asking people for ladder games.

    Hivemind

Hive took swarming to a new level with detailed analysis, thousands of games and a drive to perfect his game. He went from obscurity to #1 on the ladder within a few months. He was a well-liked personality on WON and several clans gave him honorary membership. In team games many people might not know that he rarely swarmed and played solid cap ship strats. He was constantly pushing the BM to try out new tricks. I remember one game where he laid a massive minefield in the middle of nowhere then took cloaked salvettes and dropped his enemies caps into it before they figured out what he was about.

    PreyOnU/RIP

Prey is/was the player I revered the most in my HW career. Some other greats at their best were probably as good, maybe slightly better but there was something different about Prey. I thought for a while about why I have so much respect for him, and wanted to try to explain it to those people who didn't know him. There have been a lot of top guys in the ladder with a snotty attitude, who avoided games they thought they might lose, picked weaker opponents to keep a winning streak going, were really picky about settings or about hosting and who treated n00bies like dirt. Prey would play anybody on any map any settings, even in crucial ladder games. He didn't treat you any different whether you were a n00bie or a pro. He basically was a really likeable guy. He helped a lot of people get better. I remember he and Hivemind figuring out Super Scouts and the first thing they did was share the info. At that time everybody really honored the top ladder guys like Prey and I think it was because he had a lot of integrity and had a sporting attitude, a sense of fair play. In his play he was like Molle in being unpredictable. He attacked early all the time so his games were action from the start. If somebody beat him he would analyze their game and he would be back next day with a counter. I saw him topple greats like Lucifer or JoeTheShmo this way. He loved swarming and had the touch to keep his opponents swarm beaten down but bleed off fighters to do collector attacks, or sneak salvettes into a swarm fight and pull it off. I have a recording where he stole 3 of Joe's 4 collectors (how many people ever did that to Joe?). He knocked people off their rhythm 'cos he was unpredictable. I remember another game with Toxic/Neo.BM where Prey went defender/gravwell and micro'd the well with supports so his defenders sat just outside and shredded Neo's swarm - simple idea but he did it perfectly against a top 5 swarm maniac without having practised it. He played big maps well and was a great team player. He was the guy who made BM team play what it was, through practice and strategizing. I hope he is back for HW2.

    Kalessin

Kal and I started around the same time. We swapped tricks and tangled in the ladder for months. Then over the summer of 2000 Kal became a very strong player who confounded me by playing a different strat every game and castrating my swarm with every one of them. He rejected what everybody else was doing and developed a distinct style with unique strats. He is a strong swarmer but also plays caps on small maps very skillfully. He is a great strategist and team player. He has also given his time and energy to keep the game alive by helping revitalize the ladder and organizing several websites.

    MechaChiken

Mecha is a really tough player. He could have, and should have been #1 on the ladder. He swarmed very well and used caps effectively. I hated laddering him. He kicked my tail right from the early days when he was Attrition AoK. Several games with him I beat him in the initial swarm fight and then lost the game. I remember him ramming my vettes with his collectors, probe bombing my swarm, frustrating my attacks with great support frigate micro and just being a very tough opponent. He was a mean team game opponent too. I remember being crushed by he and Kal on several occasions when they were smurfing under the guise of ELPA.

    Molle

Molle is another player like Prey who made the HW Universe a better place. His l33t skills aside he has given a lot to the game and this community through his administrative and organizational activities (thanks Molle!) and posing in the buff on the relic forums. Molle has a great attitude and has helped people improve their game. He thinks outside the box and I never know what to expect when I play him. When we all thought fighter swarm was finished last summer Molle brought back bombers. He was the first person I remember that regularly used minelayers behind a swarm on small maps. He is an all-round great player and can beat anybody.

    Pyromonger

I think Pyro is one of the best ever cap ship players in the game. He was innovative in dealing with the swarmers, always unpredictable. On big maps he is a master strategist.

    Frstkor

Frst is a great large map and team play gamer and ladder top 10 anytime he feels like it. He is the player I'd pick first as a partner for a large map game. He has great frigate micro, has an attacking style, and he never gives up. First time I remember playing him was with the OMO and he was the only player left in his team and he won the game. He is very difficult to kill so every time I play him in team games we try to gang up and take him out first. He uses all the ships in the inventory, not a guy who plays a predictable game.

    fORNAX

fORNAX is a player who is hard to beat on any map. I have seen him take on 2 or 3 good opponents on large maps and win. In ladder games he could recover from difficult situations and crush you. I learn from watching his corvette micro now. He was improving right up to the time he left for the army and I think its scary to think how good he would be now if he hadn't been interrupted.

I must apologise as I felt compelled to reply to this even though I had not played in WON much as a whole considering the length of time I've been around.

Sadly, I hadn't played these people as much as I probably should have as I had more fun hanging out with you all rather than playing Homeworld with you. I have no regrets about how I spent my time.

I could have posted many good players here, there are a lot of you. But that would have turned practically into a list of all my friends and I'd have to do it by volume. I'd never finish.

I will also limit myself to those who had been actively playing in 2000. So sorry to 7th and 414 and many of DD, AOK, BDU, etc etc. because you were retired by then

Incidentally, all of those I will mention have already been mentioned by those before me, and they know better than I do how well they played. For myself, I shall try to present them in matters other than WON or Homeworld.

    dukath:
We all know him best for Gravwells. I remember him (aside from other things) for the weeks we played CivNet together waiting for HW:C. For discussions with mecha about computer science, for his recent infatuation with Heroes of Might and Magic. Also for the laughs we had for weeks and months at other people by having the same hostmasks in IRC. I'm not even quite sure that there aren't some who still think that Shin=dukath and dukath=Shin.

    mecha:
Dolt. I am thankful for the day when the CC invaded IRC. I can't remember how many fun times I had with GuaRR's lunacy, StonerD and mecha's encyclopedia of namecalling and more besides. mecha is an authority on video games for a reason, and that reason is that he's a complete video game nut. When the times comes that he does get evil power, all of us might be affected in ways that I shall, for the moment, and true to "mecha-form", keep secret.

    kalessin:
He was in US-time so we really didn't get to hang out much except when he (often) chose to do all-nighters. Kal is a hardware nut whether it be computers or cars. He's also a strong Bush supporter (HEH) and I both dread and immensely enjoy ONO POLITIX discussions especially with eTombotron around. I can only imagine the shame many might feel if I told you all that Kal beat you playing Homeworld on an iMac while eating dinner.

    molle:
I love this geezer to death and I'd wish he'd hang around more if only I didn't also think that he'd be wasting talent if he wasn't doing a boss-type job in any company. I think back with amusement at how close he came to forming a game development company, and yet he may still! Molle is also one of the pillars of the current community. Egads, without him I'd have to host GS on my 33.6k. I have always been thankful to molle for several key occasions that I was at a loss on how to handle matters. He, along with the "dolt krew" in old #HW:C (practically all of these guys and more besides) have from time to time helped me put my feet on solid ground.

    grimm:
I almost think this guy is clinically insane. It was hilarious that time when he went up against certain Austnet admins even though he didn't stand a chance. Yet he came out as the winner simply because of form and the fact that they were reduced to the level of childishness that was both sad and comic to witness. I credit grimm with my final resolve to move away from austnet. I think it's worth finally mentioning that those times when he was at the top of his game, he was not only playing on a "crap POS computer !@#%" but also with a "crap POS connection". I dunno, I think he's autistic.

    downslope:
I honestly have not realised how good he's become in playing Homeworld. Oh those dreadful bounty games! /d\ always had odd whims, changing names, joining clans, and that hilarious scheme in Jumpgate. He shall be one of the initiating members of my new boy band group named Shin'Sync.

    frstkor13:
His first days in IRC were such a chore that I don't know how I managed to handle it. I remember vividly the fun we had when we invaded Jumpgate. In retrospect I think the game wasn't all that good, the only real reason that I kept on playing and playing was because of all the people who I was playing with frst, eT, Muffy, Omnistar, metho, frisky... geez there are so many of you that I'll stop right now. frst always had something he wanted to do be it some FL thing, some IRC thing, some game thing. frst would be the type of guy where, if he was a traffic cop for instance, would find creative and immensely effective ways of policing one day, and would just stand in a podium and scream at violating motorists on another. I await with anxiety the time when EVE goes beta, we have quite the dolt krew formed.

    reki:
Probably one of the most level-headed and funny people around. Heck, those qualities were what initially got him a moderator position. reki has leet web skillz that made the FL site possible. And I do so remember his antics during the korean invasion of IRC. Speaking of which...

    fORNAX:
I never realy hung out with him, never even played him. But all of the above respected his skill in playing. I remember danger's (I won't mention him in the list because he was retired ), reki's, and the others' antics with the "naughty koreans" and am still amused. kekekekekek

There you have it. Certainly not a complete "Best Players Evar" listing, and also certainly not my complete friends listing. This is probably a first installment, God knows I could cite more things about other people and mention others besides. I won't say "I hope I haven't left anyone out" because I know I really have. Throughout this excercise I knew that I could not possibly come up with a complete listing that would be satisfactory even to myself. I have been thinking of reasons to excuse myself from not being able to list all that deserve to be listed and all that thinking has made me hungry.

So now I end. Food calleth.

I think you guys have most all of the best of the best, so I'll just add my favorite guys to play.

Molle : Just for his sheer inventiveness. Just when you think you've got him, look out. You have been defeated.

Kamel : Irritating probe bombing and consistently pounding you into the space dust will make you love to hate this guy. He's awesome!

Blood : Very consistent and always throwing coconuts your way will get him what he wants. Your Bananna.

Toxic : Very Good friend of mine! Awesome vette waller and decent cap player! All around good strats from him.

Mordeth : Sneaky little bugger. Probe him and see vettes, next thing you know, here's a grav well and caps blasting away your collection.

Apollo : Great all around player. Sub strat mainly consists of vettes, but he can change up from time to time.

Cathar : Didn't ladder him, but played some good 1v1 and team games with him. Great swarmer and cap player. Will mix it up with the best.

BattleFox : Also great swarmer and cap player. Fox is the inventer of many great strats. Fear this man!!!

Cpt Unreal : Watched this guy go from an easy win, to blowing stuff up in no time. No way will he ever give up, watch your backs when you play him.

Lots of others out there should be added to the list.

Mmm, why not add my li'l opinions to this thread... I know you've all been waiting for my definitive list

Actually, pretty much everyone has been mentioned already, so I don't need to go into details. I certainly didn't get mentioned nearly enuff *g*, but got it where it counts (and GAZ knows where THAT is, hee heeeee). That's probably b/c as big a loudmouth as I was (just the way I am hehe), I tended to avoid conflict. I liked easy goin' games, I never cared if I won or lost.... which is why you may have seen me in so many EXPERT ONLY!!! teams games paired with a bunch of complete nuubs vs 1st or Apollo or sum other sessy biaches, ready to bend over and get gangbanged... It also means I played a much larger range of players than most people on WON, and certainly more FFAs than anyone I know... so I'd go for long periods of time without a specific nemesis.

Only exception to that was when sumone got sick of my mouthing off and actually CHALLANGED me, wooo hoooo, I could never turn those down Watch out, I actually micromanage in those battles *g* Probably where I got most of my rep, scorched enugh HW GODs in my time (and not just in the chat room ;P)

There's also sum vicious rumors floating around that I was semi-active on the ladder....... totally untrue, I can assure you :P

Anyways... honorable mentions go out to:

Grumpy/Belt : I LOVE this guy! Probably the coolest HW player ever, and pretty good too, I guess... :P

Crusty : THE ULTIMATE HW GOD!!!! LOL..... another awesome person, and a great player, too... he was esp good at micromanaging his ships to hide behind my fleet in team games :P

Apollo : I don't agree with him an ANYTHING, but still respect him... about the only person on WON who could say "Shut up, Pyro" and I might be quiet (for a while, anywyas :P) Frequently seen hanging around Wild and Dbl-Gem, Griff, Joe, and a host of other excellent SLS players

Frisky : this guy could swarm... I've never sweated more in a game than trying to deal with Frisk's small-map swarms. The only player I've lost to on Subj AFTER building a MD.... ;(

BuckRogers : One of the most savvy cap players ever... I learned alot about dealing with mixed fleets from playing Buck... esp how to employ minefields in an agressive manner.

BattleFox: A damned good player, and a cool guy, he never stopped analyzing the game. If it wasn't for his help, I never would have been able to deal with post-patch swarms on Subj... I owe most of my 1 on 1 wins to playing styles sculpted in our many discussions and matchups.

Fornax (do-it-all arse-kicker), 1stkor (daaaamn sexy, and dan good hehe), Chewy (my original mentor heh), Hydro (we made an deadly team) ... jesus, this list is gonna be too long. You guys all know yer good... you don't need me to say it again. We had many fun and exciting games together So lemme just get to my FAVORITE HW players of all time... I considered them the best overall, the most well-balanced ---->

Targeter : YEP DOLT!!! You are up there! Heheh, swarming, caps, big maps, small maps, he owns it all. Probably the best large-map swarmer, I learned (the hard way) most of my swarm defense and offensive strategies from this genius. Supremely aggressive playing style, unfortuantely not anal enuff to be the best at anything. :P But, he's the one I'd put my money on in a totally new situation...

Dukath : The only ladderer who would play no-harvest games for fun, but could still own the best of the best on their turf. My ass has been saved by his gravwells in more than one tough team game :P Although he's known as Mr.Gravwell, it was his openminded playing style showed me the huge variety gaming options available.

Kamel : omg. By far the greastest cap player I've ever faced. I perfer to play slow and steady (think FFs), Buck played sneaky, Kamel was the tiger -- he played vicious. Probably the only other player I know who could FORCE you to run into their MS... a micromanaging savant, I swear his AFs could breakdance. Every game we played was balanced on a pinhead... one mistake and that was it. Playing to the limit, at least a quarter of our games ended in draws when our MS collided :P "OH NO NOT AGAIN!!!" lol ... I would have loved to play more team games with him... probably my ultimate nemesis, or maybe doppelganger -- frisky owes me big for keeping him off his back for so long

I'm not gonna even mention Hive But if yer out there, ya know I love ya, thx for all the games/lessons, watch out for me in HW2... you too MajorFreak, we never played a single game together, and I think I saw you on WON maybe ONCE, but I'd never have reached the level I did without our agonizingly anal strat discussions and your in-depth faqs

Well... that's a'boot all I can remember for now. I miss playing you dolts, but I broke my CD and I'm not coming backk till HW2 is out :P Besides, was spending too much time in the chat room, I needed to get out and find sum underage girls to molest >:P

    Best Players

I think most of the best players have been given their due already. I just wanted to add a few to the list:

    - Sub Atomic Cascade: Played lots of 1v1 and occasional 2v2 with him during the first 6 months of HW. This guy in his HW prime is like Molle. Never played the same strat on you. Def build, Vette build, Cap build and pulled a HC build on me also [when I was nOOb]. He was one of the first #1 ladder players in HW.

    - Mancer: He was my primary 2v2 team mate and had mad skills. Superb in swarm and frig build. Also, #1 in ladder [streak of 44].

These 2 I wanted to add on the list. In their HW ladder prime, they are as tough as any I played. Both of them pretty much played in the same era [1999 version 1.01 - 1.03].

As for me, never liked ladder due to extreme competition. A team player by heart but hates to lose. So I don't have any accolades. OK with me. Some of you know my name, "cgc" before "d4e4". 414, DD, Stripe7 and Soul|FL knows this name back in the days. Today, I just like to play occasionally on team games on any map on any settings but not 1 min = 9999 inject.

Hi people, i Finally got my hands on Cataclysm ... aaahhh this Game is totally Cool and unforgiving ... good hehehehe I Love everything about it ... Top notch so so good !!!!

after reading some of the crazy stuff one can find here, i didnt know if this was mention before but one of the good players that played this game some guy named ManusBDU came up with the Idea of having light-corvettes and heavy-corvettes be Heal by a support frigate for damage by hitting the "Z" key multiple times and have them fighting in a game all in once under a Wall Formation, i dont know if this is used today but it was a sure punch-out back then.

    Cheers !!!

Molle - taught me just recently to never follow him when his scouts make a runner

Shutupandshave - one of the current best in Homeworld... currently topped the
Original Homeworld Ladder now top of the other Other HW ladder

Kamel - Played him a few times, he raped me

    BloodSLS - yeah babay

RiddockFL - Noice fella hard to beat - but fun in a 2v2

skibb, molle, mecha, frst are the four that I remember most. Three because they are just damn good. One because hes a royal pain in the posterior. And damn good. If it where not for HW:C there would be more names on the list, surely.

Come HW2 and you will all be writing my name on these types of threads though

    Lex(SLS), Recon(SLS)
    JoetheShmoe
    Infinitychiken
    Molle|FL, Unreal|FL
    Kamel_AE
    EmpireDAB, XanionDAB

And any peep crazy enough to hit numba 1-10 on the ladders

As for me I am just a squirrel trying to get a nut No particular order but IMO these peeps know the game's capabilities inside/out and know how to use what little weaknesses to their advantage
