America's Army: Have you tried it?

As was posted a few moths (2?) back the US Army is releasing 2 free games to give people a chance to see/feel what it is like being in the US Army. So how many of you have tried it and how many of you liked it?

I should say that this past weekend I was on for the first time in multiplayer for a few hours. I've played CS for 2+ years off and on and I must say this is much more realistic, and in my view, more FUN than CS on so many levels.

I haven't played any of the SoF or Ghost Recon type games out there so I can't compare it to them but I can say I think I found the replacement for CS I've been looking for.

I was playing a MOUT map and it played a lot like CS in that you have 2 teams, rounds, and objectives to meet but it is better in many ways. I had a blast playing even though I died quiet frequently due to map unfamiliarity.

So who has tried it and what do you think about it (especially since it is 100% free)?
    There is power in words.

Interesting. It seems a government hacker has been paid to break into Alpha_1's forum account and post this ad.
The army must be getting desperate.

Heh, I love the game to pieces. Finally a dev team who doesn't have to worry about their bottom line and can put a higher priority on realism than 'gameplay' or 'balance'.

I've been waiting for an FPS like this one for a great long time

I've played it and I like it. I've gone through Basic, but I can't connect to any of the servers, so i haven't played MP yet.

Try using All-Seeing Eye, I can connect to MOUT_McKenna all the time, the other servers...umm, that's luck dependent.

You should try playing all the levels, before sniper school comes out and the snipers spoil the game.

I've tried it. Played the "training" mission with the MILES gear.
There's some kind of screwy balistics/lag or something 'cause for some reason, 3-round bursts at 3 meters in the chest don't drop a guy when I shoot.... Then he shoots and I die.. *sigh*

I prefer Ghost Recon so far.

Can you set the Army Ops up for LAN play? I'd really like to try that (no lag)

I play infiltration mod for UT. If you want realism, this is in many ways better than CS and AA because it adds in weapon handling simulation as well. The only problem I have with it is the netcode (it has very bad prediction, as well as other limitations of the UT netcode), which is supposedly going to be improved in the next version.

CS, AA still play like "video games" compared to infiltration - just using your weapon takes skill (there's no crosshair on your screen, you have to pull the gun up to your face to use the iron bars, and you can move your weapon around a bit without turning).

I had intended to download it, but every time I think about it I just play RTCW instead.

It sounds interesting, however, people seem to be having a problem with lag and connections, so that's a bit of a turn off.

Actually you CAN'T play the game if you do not register (I think). Get this, if you TK too much you get banned for a set ammount of time from official servers. They even show you going to Levenworth, lol. It'll stop all the TKers out there. It sets a high standard for teamwork. I liked the play even though I was on for the one time so far. Sure lag may be a factor but since the game is team oriented all the way it is still fun to play. You get no 'radar' like in CS so you have no idea who the person is sneaking up to your position. If you don't use voicecom it gets kind of hard to keep from hitting team mates if you're not careful. I can't wait for more action.

I find the quick 'voices' you can use in RTCW very handy, as well as the location indicator on the score board and chat text (example Name(location):Chat Text). This let you quickly alert people to incoming enemies, when you need ammo or health or when to stop shooting at your teammates.

Another thing that can also be useful is the IFF, teammates would have their class, name and health displayed when you passed the crosshair over them. Enemies would not. But that's not very realistic and eventually you can tell who's on the Axis team and who's on the Allies team by glancing at their uniforms.

Lag can be a bigger problem then most people think, I played EverQuest for over a year and I know what problems it can cause. The punishment for TKing is quite nice, PunkBusters was a step in the right direction but it's not enough.
