    Tau Mod Interview

    Hey guys,

Dawn of War Planet has posted a great interview with Richofen, mod team leader. The Interview basically focuses on the Tau mod that these talented guys are developing and provides some great insight into the future, progress, and thought behind the mod.

Be sure to check it out!

That was pretty interesting, and enjoyable to read. Great interview.

I'm not really a fan of the Tau, but I'm looking forward to playing with them in Dawn of War. They should add some interesting style to the game.

Unfortunately, I doubt the AI could be taught to jump units out of combat or to fight while withdrawing, which would make the Tau horribly weak in the hands of the comp (from the sound of the interview). Of course, you can always jack up the difficulty when playing against the Tau...

Don't be worried. Sooner or later a good ork player will get into cc, and the Tau are then very much on the back foot, and they aren't quite fast enough to disengage from a quicker unit.

Therin lies our greatest balance hurdle

Before being in combat, the Orks will lose tons of boyz. If you corner the tau, then you are on an advantage because they can't use their mobility to get back and shoot more. It's hard to balance 1 race with all their advantages in one area against another race with all its' advantages in the opposite area.

Thanks for the support and we're hoping to get a demo for you guys in early February!

We don't want to release an unfinished product and no, animations aren't anywhere near finished.

The Tau Mod is the mod thats got the furthest (so far) isnt it?

I know they've got many units modelled, some in the game itself, etc.

hey that was awsome just that with all the far range weapon that tau gets and the kroots that helps them as close range its going to be pretty hard to kill them

Stormboyz: the ultimate fear of the Tau. "Run! Run! RUN!!!". That is, of course, unless the Tau realise that stormboyz are harmless when confronted with Stealth Suits (burst cannon and jump- they jump when the stormboyz do, and shoot them some more). I imagine Tau vs Orks will be an interesting and presumably wildly destructive battle- Tankbustas, Nobz, Stormboyz will hack their way straight through FW with their high damage (Tau may be next to useless in cc but they can survive a short while when fighting Slugga Boyz, though they won't really be hitting back much). Meanwhile the Tau then have lots of troops with burst cannon (shorter-ranged, slightly weaker heavy bolter for those of you who don't know much about Tau, can move and fire) and pulse carbine (combination anti-morale grenade launcher and light assault weapon) and they gun down loads of orks with these. So basically you have a war fought around the Orks trying to pin down the Tau in cc where they will massacre them and the Tau desperately trying to avoid cc and doing a Xerxes- fighting back the tide.

I'd predict that tau vs orks would become extremely micro intensive. The tau will be constantly trying to keep out of CC (like marines) while the orks will constantly be trying to draw tau units close by moving targetted units back. Lots and lots of death

I don't think the Tau will have much problems with the Orks if implemented in Dawn of War with the same stats as the rulebook. Meaning powerful long range weapons and stuff.

I think even the Tau Fire Warriors have pretty powerful starting weapons right? Something rifles...forgot what it was called. And their battlesuits with the railguns should take down even a Defiler pretty fast?

Pulse Rifles will do significantly more damage than a bolter (I speculate it will be somewhere in the low 30s). Broadside Battlesuits with their twin-linked railguns are a relic unit, and their twin-linked guns will do probably 50-100 more (conservatively) damage than twin lascannon. They are a heavy weapon though. Tau are superior in nearly all areas of ranged damage, with the possible exception of having no indirect weapons (like the Eldar). They are also manouvreable with lots of jumps (short jumps, more charges, quicker) and Orca dropships to get their less mobile infantry into place (Fire Warriors mainly, also for Crisis Suits, which are a versatile light walker unit, and for drones which are basically cheap squishy units to act as distractions or simply speedbumps).

There are no kroot. Don't even ask! (Sorry, we will not be able to put them into the game by the first release, they may arrive later in an expansion mod).

EDIT: Didn't see this second page. It'll be a tough game for orks but also a tough game for Tau- probably one of the most challenging match-ups possible. Don't worry, neither will be doomed to a bloody death, it'll rely on the players' skill with their respective races. (Orks need to shepherd the Tau into dead ends from which they can't escape, or simply swarm in with so many slugga boyz that they can't get away; Tau will need to avoid the orks like the plague but will need to have their firepower units put out enough shots to kill off most of them before cc, drones are good for distraction too, and can do decent morale damage).

If anybody in the Tau camp possibly needs an extra hand with texturing, drop me a line.

Just getting back into the TT game after about 12 years' absence from miniature painting, and seeing as how a Tau army is a little over-budget for me at the moment, I'd like to possibly lend a hand in an online version.

That is actually a distinct possibility- you will lose far less req worth of wartrucks than orks vs fire warriors, pathfinders, stealth suits. Though you'd have to watch out for crisis suits jumping close and letting rip with fusion blasters.

It's your job as the Ork player to make sure they do. While the Tau firepower is massive, it's not exactly going to kill a kan (seriously, no pun intended) in one hit from a fusion blaster. Say the Orks send three... a bunch of crisis suits all with fusion will kill probably one, damage another.
