    Mine Fields

You know I've seen quite a few threads on turrets, but one on mine fields. Are they any good? do you guys ever build them? Do they effect vehicles?

I usually build minefields either when I'm winning easily and have resource to spare, or am losing horribly and want the enemy to bouce around for my enjoyment They can be quite useful to delay heavy close combat squads/ armies like the Orks. They come running in, kaboom, about half get there on time and the others are a few seconds late (Which can make a big difference).

Waste of time. I'd prefer more Heavy weapons.

Mines can save your life if you are look down the wrong end of an ork rush. While they cc you they will go flying and you shoot em. I have a thread posted on this whole subject.

Its fun to use them on DMC or Vok if you hold the centre. Then you stick your rocket men on them so you can kill vehicles without infantry chopping you up in melee.

I usually mine the entrance to my base so when those pesky infiltrating scouts walk across kaboom...and they basically will have a hard ass time getting in.

Yeh, I agree with the last two posters - mines work great for stopping those infiltrating troops, since theres no such thing as a cloaked spotter. Also, unless you're eldar, you can't build defenses near those handy little critical areas. A couple of minefields, either directly around the point (to prevent de-capping) or in a line on one side (the direction of the anticipated assault).

Since mines are so underused, most guys armies - and attack plans - don't take them into accout. Try it, they work!

mines also work well on levels like burial grounds. since people will sneak through the negative to get a shortcut to your base, put some mine fields there and you can really mess up their infantry

if your going assassinate you'd better have some mines at choke points and anywhere else something cloaked can sneak in. dont want enemies sneaking in and finding your cmd, or for that matter what buildings you have and where they are. mines are mainly to stop cloaked units from getting anything deepstriked into your base, at which point your boned. it'll keep skull probes off you if other players keep using them, but vs infantry with sgts their a waste. its best to go mines + turrets around so if you do find anything its in for a nasty surprise. dont think they'll hold off a full assaulting army for long though.

a tier 3 SM will use speeders for DSing nowerdays, they get in fast, cant be stopped in time, and cost crap all (180/170 or something, but damn low for tier 3)

i use them on 3 v 3's on kasyr.. its one of the first things i do... i put mines on the bridge and get teammates too aswell.. i know it seems dumb.. but i'd rather that then get deep struck later on

Once upon a time, I played Orcs and it turned out, that his boyz were rampaging in my camp, while my marines where doing their best to bring his base down. Naturally, I tried to bring in reinforcements, but they were getting slaughtered the moment they got out of the barracks. What I had were two idle servitors, who used my last power to build a minefield next to the barracks. Soon enough, his boys chased my servitors in circles around the barracks, each time tripping the minefield... It didn´t break them, but it kept them hopping around long enough for me to finish his base.

This didn´t help me in the end, as he had TWO more "bases" by this time (no real hq of course), but it was sure fun to watch.

Conclusion: pretty useless but fun at times.

As for wiring up crits (say like bloodshed alley): your opponent will more than likely

    1. see you building the minefields and start shooting at it OR at your servitor before it is completed

    2. have a hero with him, who detects mines anyway.

Dose any one else find it rather odd that mines detonate when landspeeders
    Fly over them ?!!

Needless to say that the squad of cultists barely managed to escape when my landspeeders
    Suddenly exploded mid flight.

land mines … that affect flying vehicles

First post here so go easy

If you want your 'flying' troops, grav tanks, jump packers, speeders, etc. to not get hit by landmines, you use the jump ability to go over the suspected (or confirmed) minefield. If you use a regular move, you get hit!

I recall a paragraph from some 40K Tabletop fluff that answered why landmines would hit speeders - something about the down push of a gravimetric engine triggering the mine, and it going off like a 'bouncing betty' (which already exsists today, a mine that pops a few feet in the air before exploding). However, the futuristic element here was that these bouncers would lock on to the nearest target and use a small propellant to jet towards it.

As for jump packs, they're called 'jump' packs. Essentially a controlled bound. The only time a jump pack troop resembles flying is when they deep strike from the back of an overflying Thunderhawk, and use the jets to slow the boost, kinda like a parachute. So when a jump packer is moving along the ground, he's running and taking little bounces.

One more piece of useless info for ya, in EPIC 40K 2nd edition, they made the distinction between what was a 'flying' vehicle, and what was just hover, jump, speeder, etc. All the eldar tanks, all the speeders and jump troops were classified as GROUND based units, with a unique form of locomotion that allowed them to pass over difficult terrain, make short jumps, move faster etc... but not fly.

Ok, I'm done now. Did I go easy enough?
    No signature today. Perhaps tomorrow.

lol it took me a minute to get that...

ya know i never bothered to thnk about the cover thing.. its probarbly quite smart... camp your troops near some heavy or light cover.. mine that cover to hell.. enemy comes in thinking 'noob' cos my troops arent in cover.. then gets blown to hell

although to make them worth the 50/50 cost.. i think they should be undected by hero units etc... i mean.. you can have a devistating 300 res minefield... which would more then earn its worth.. if only the special units didnt see it.. i only get them if my enemy is ork..

i like to place them in between me and the ork.. or stand my guys on them... ork move in for CC go boom.. sorry im knackered as i write /type this lol

plonk them right in front of your defensive units against a player entirely concentrating on CC, even if they see them they have to shoot at thme, wwasting valuable time when you can blow them to pieces

Mine fields are pretty good...if there is an area that your opponent has to advance through no matter what to do something, mine it. Eg, the bottom of canyons, fords, etc etc. Never fails. Not much good against heavy infantry though. And I have to agree, great against scouts...pesky infiltrators, grml.....

I have found that mines are most effective when you have multiple CP's to defend around your base. I place them around relativley undefended posts, and far enough away so I can send in some back up! B

You only need to worry about taking down skull probes when your opponent has drop troops...*whince*

on tier3, once all your main structures are built, your army is massedand there is nothing left to build, get your servs, hold shift, and build turrents at random locations in your czone, then while still holding shift fill the gaps with mines.
Any wiseguy tryin split your full on frontal assault to go babysit your base will be suprised. you'll be laughing, he'll be crying.
"GO ON! DEEPSTRIKE! I DARE YOU!"
    Hehehehehe

mines rock... build them so that you can shoot at the enemy.. this will allow you to kill his units one by one since he cant get all his units forward.... but i think its lame that you can detect mines... it would be better if you could only detect mines when they where trickered.... also why do they effect flying units ?

i find that landmines help mostly for possessed marines. i had about 5 squads coming down on me after they forced my marines into retreat, but they gave me enough time to litter the ground in front of my base with mines, so when they attacked me they almost literally were slaughtered as they were blown away while my marines melted them with plasma.
