    Landspeeders...

Would a landspeeder heavy army, or even a pure lanspeeder army work, such as a Ravenwing army?
More importantly, would it be fairly simple for a new player to use this type of army correctly?
Any comments would be welcome. Thanks for helping out a newb.

As a new player, I would seek a well balanced marine army. Specialized armies are best left to when you have more experience. Atleast that's my personal belief on that. You want to be more than good on the rules and have a good many games under your belt.

As to the feasability of an army like that, I'm not sure you can do an army entirely of land speeders, but I believe you can have a good many of them.

The Ravenwing and such themed armies are not for the newer gamers. They take alot of knowledge about their effectiveness within your gaming group.

Your model count is very low and speeders are thin armor so easy for even standard arms to take down.

they are a great unit in v4 but a ravenwing army can only top out at 9+ the master after that you are taking all bikes and in a standard 2k point army you are looking at less than 30 models on average, not enough to really stand against massed fire that is coming in.

what about in a small 1000pts game. Here goes:

    captain: bP, chainsword 77?

    5x scouts: Bp, chainsword 65

    5x scouts: Bp, chainsword 65

    3x landspeeder tornado 240

    3x land speeder tornado 240

3x land spedder: multi melta 195

pred destructor: heavy bolters , storm bolter 120

    1002

Look at it this way... for the price of a 3-strong landspeeder tornado squad with heavy bolters/assault cannons, you could get a 5 man terminator squad with 2 assault cannons for 15 points cheaper. Less weapons but they take ALOT more firepower to kill.

Although assault cannons are pretty freakin cool right now, they are NOT the ultimate weapon, and if you try to base your army around taking as many as possible, you're going to fail alot more often than you succeed.

But, it IS a bold and daring plan, so good luck if you actually go through with it. You've got my blessing.

Infantry killers and ample tank/monster killers. Nice and very different, your opponents should have trouble against this list if they don't have time to prepare a counter list.

EDIT: Good to see peeps without the standard, boring as hell, Space Marine force.

    What force would THAT be?

Wow... lots of good advice, thanks for all of it, but one question, would a landspeeder army be fairly good against a vanilla Tau army? (I know I should just be getting a normal Space Marine force to begin with, but just curious as a friend is starting Warhammer 40k with me as Tau.) Thanks for the advice anyways.

Oh geez landspeeders would rape an infantry heavy Tau force. Actually, they'd probably rape a Mechanized Tau force too.

Firewarriors would probably have their way with landspeeders.

I guess if you can manage to get in range of one squad per turn, you'd be fine. Otherwise things could get nasty.

Ya.. I think that among all the infantry heavy armies you could face, tau would be among the more dangerous to a big force of landspeeders. Landspeeders are vulnerable to massed firepower because they have low armor but can force glancing hits only.... Though a force with a higher bs and weaker guns, (sms), would probably be a better threat.

Yes, but Landspeeder Tornadoes are capable of slaughtering AP4 infantry. Heavy Bolters and Assault Cannons get 7 AP 4 shots a turn... 2 landspeeders will put a squad out of commission in one shooting phase.

The biggest threat would be the stealthsuits.

So it would seem to be a Pyrric(sp?) victory for any side that won, due to massive casualties. Thanks for the info, was just curious.
