Gamers Mod - To balance DoW and add more

I was thinking the other day about other games, and why they are balanced. In RTCW, they had OSP. In ET, they had ET PRO. Why dont we get a group together and make our own game if u like? We could balance fire prisms, warpspiders, orcs, whatever, test it extenstively and mod it into the one patch. Ontop of that we could keep every1 constantly updated and whatnot.

Its an idea that would work if the community accepted it - The testing team would consist of 10 - 20 of the top 20, 10 - 20 of the top 100, and 10 - 20 of the top 500, allowing opinions of all variety to be shared.

Oh, we'd need some modders to

    What do ya think?

I second this, if people are going to whine about imba etc then why don't they show us how they'd do it?

I definately support this not only because it gives us a chance to put money where our mouths are, but because it also takes into account that balance can seem different to all levels of play, which is important.

I think its a good idea...if nothing else it might demonstrate to some people that balancing is harder than they think and could lead to a reduction in whining.

There are a few balance mods with nifty features in them, but I think the game will be balanced when Relic fixes the bugs (the ork morale bug in particular, will make a huge difference).

I actually don't support the idea very much...

Just as ET had ET PRO, and UT had TCC and UTComp and such, this will split the community if it gets too bug. Instead of balance-driven flamewars (which will still be there anyway), there will be arguments over the use of the thing. Some very good players might leave the original ladder, leaving 2 half-assed communities instead of 1 (barely) decent one.

Allow Relic to fix things-- we have their guaranteed support till at least WA.

Or build a program that makes editing those LUA files easy and newbie-friendly. Then throw it at the community and see how many disasterpieces come out. Take that number, and shove it down the whiners' throats, and judge the inaneness of their previous behavior by how much they can or can't swallow.

I don't understand why things need to be balanced at all levels of play, to me they are two completely different things. If one person is no good at the game, and constantly looses to say PSM, does that mean PSM need a nerf? Or the player needs to learn proper counters?

This extends right up to the very top level of play and IMO everything should be balanced around playing at the top skill level.

Edit: My comment wasn't aimed at anyone, just the "should be balanced around the majority's skill level" comment comes up every now and again and it really confuses me...

It actually means balanced at the Top AND the lower levels of play.

Well if people are up for it, any chance we could steal some modders?

Any1 interested in being testers for it?

Obviously it would be a slow and tedious adventure - playing millions of games under the same circumstances until we balance as much as possible. Then if it was successful enough Relic may implement it - ok, thats maybe a bit far, but id definately be up for the creating of such if it meant balancing the game.

So, any modders? Any testers? Shout forward

How about we take an existing MOD done by one of our members and test it out to see how any changes made already pan out. There are at least 2 that I have read about. It would appear as if much of the work involved has been done but the test base has been to small to date.

Select an On-Line area, as is being done among the Map Mods currently, one that sees little use, and designate it the test area and anyone who wants in will require whatever MOD is selected. I have offered my services before but have always kinda shyed away from screwing up my base game install. Apparently that is not an issue anymore.

So once again, I'm in. Cheers and

If any1 is interested could download irc, and join Quakenet, channel #dowgamermod, then we could all chat easily and discuss whatever. Bear in mind we'll need atleast 5 modders who know there stuff, and atleast 20 testers if we want this to work out balanced.

I dissagree. First there is already a program that is relatively easy to use. Even before the Attribute editor, minor changes in lua files was easy with text editors for the minor aspects of the game. I think that disasterpieces would be rarer than you think, unless you set your standards so high that I'd have to nominate RELIC as a disasterpiece producer, which I wont.

Personally I'm waiting for the patch. After that we'll see how things are. I'm planning to do my own balance mod then (but it will cater to strange whims of a few, like unified caps for one, less effective melee, smaller squads though not more numerous, less micro, etc) and only then. I would help with any other balance mod, though, and I promise to do what the people want and not quit due to my personal opinons.

You underestimate the power of the vast majority, but I'm just gonna leave this at this for now.

I'm not so much thinking that a lot of people do not have crap ideas as that most of them would not bother or be able to actually mod them in :-)
