It was delayed for a week as we made it v1.30 compliant so the AI would work far better under v1.30 then it did a week ago. Certainly thats worth a week delay?!

We plan to have a more aggressive release schedule as we've already delays v1.2 for well over a month. It was, however, worth it considering our AI only a week ago was real lackluster under v1.30. Now that its 85% close to what it would be under v1.20 we're quite QUITE pleased. :bandit: Release should be within 2 days.

Hey guy... how is it timing consuming when all other mods are doing it? Have you asked for help? The new fileformat is 5-10x better for us all: game runs a helleva lot faster under v1.30 then it did for v1.20 now! Loads faster! I think we need someone to help you convert over. It took the Cadian team only half a day to do it.

Lets see.. Compiler or UltDrake will help you with the conversion. They have know how its done. It would be superb, kjon, to add your mod to the community. You are after all covering an important part of War40k.

Gonna revive the maxunit mini mod....

If I get giskard's permission I'm gonna try to rivive the maxunit mini mod... I like bigger battles myself & find the 20 cap is lower than what suits me. I've already have an alpha, just need to iron out the caps jumping up with faster than they should. I'm totally new to this stuff so any help/suggestions would be nice.

ALL DoW MOD TEAMS PLEASE READ THIS LIST!

Might I suggest you make Horus Heresy healthy again

I have the models..they WILL be animated...and they will be coded..even if I have to pimp out my services to get a coder. :fright:
To try and fail is noble.
To never try for fear of failure is tragic.

Edcase - there is no activity on your site mentioned in my grand list. Public needs to know whats going on there. Even some quick screenies. So glad to hear yer still progressing!

Any chance of a list of completed mods?

Perhaps the same list but with a % complete figure next to each title.

    Thanks

Well.. logistically, how do you quantify completion and discuss it logically with all the participating mod teams? Not easy.. Each one of its leaders/coordinators/directors would have to PM me and let me know % of total completion. However, I can tell you v1.3 of our Advanced Skirmish AI is now 100% complete and finishing dox and to be packaged. :bandit:

I just wanted to let you know that the Honour the Astartes mod is not dead. It's just temporarily on halt, simply because my machine is in a galaxy far far away (or should I say, on the other side of the country).

It will be revived when I get my machine back, which will at latest be within the end of the month. At the current moment, I am focussing on doing work for the Horus Heresy mod too.

Anyways, just to let you know, it ain't dead... and when I do get my machine back, work will probably go better than before

thud: Still haven't been able to get a job. Negative replies only so far, and it's starting to look dark... there are only so many firms around I won't give up though!

My 2-3 months that I was allowed to live here is starting to catch up (actually, it's 2 months today, heh), so it means I have to find another place. An aunt of my girlfriend has offered me to stay with her, and it has been said that I could stay there for a long time. Not that I plan to stay there long, I'd rather get a job and my own place and not live on everybody else, but it means I don't have to move back.

On the DoW side of all this, it means the following: The aunt doesn't have a PC, so I'll have to travel back home and fetch mine (meaning I can get serious work done). However, she doesn't have broadband (why should she need it without a PC?), so that means I'm stuck with either buying a 56K modem, or using my cellphone as a modem... limited internet connectivity, not to mention activity from my side.

This doesn't mean that I can't upload and download mods. All I need to do is either take my memory pen or some CD-R's and visit my girlfriend. Since they have broadband (and since this is the place I am writing this very post from, hehe), I can download and take it with me from here.

I am happy to be a part of such a community as this, and am looking forward to continue contributing to it. It'll be fun doing some modding again.

How are things going for you then thud? How do you manage to have time doing all this free work for the community with a small child at hand?

Its going fine although being a Dad can suck alot - having a dependant drains time and also brain-power (stepping down to such low forms of communication and acting). Its fun sometimes, others its a serious burden. Little one is over 6months old. In that time I've totally enjoyed working in the DoW community and helped release 4 revisions of the AI project. I need this diversion or I'd go mental. Most time when little one goes to sleep @ 8:30pm I have a good solid 4-5 hours of coding and testing each day. Some more some less but the biggest lifesaver is work. I'm an IBMer so we can have slow periods so I code/script ALOT there and it really saves me time!

So family life is okay. We're talking about a second child but I am by no means ready for one let alone getting through this first one. Its hell. Makes me wonder how the heck civilization survived these untold millions of years rearing offspring. Gawd! Not sure I was mentally/psychologically ready for it. Still determining that. Yer in such hi-tech surroundings then to come home to reduce yourself to a lower state is a bizzare switch. Plus the burden of sitting at home sooo wishing you could go out with the guys every 3-4 days or even remembering the singles life. <sigh> Sometimes I reevaluate the fact of being lonely and if it really is a bad thing? Hey.. I'm a modern man with so much media trite shoved down our throats here. Its a over-indulgence of brain-stew that caters to the fact that being single, successful, and young is good and anything else sux.

Anyway, I'm glad the DoW is like another home.

Thud, a quick suggestion in regards to mod quality: strategy. In regards to current DoW races, each has its own unique take on combat/battle. ie Orks = close combat/swarm Eldar = quick/ranged combat. Mods which are trying to incorporate new races/factions should consider the existing races' tactics/special abilities and try to come up with a general take on what their faction/race is good at based on what codex (or non-codex) material the mod-team is dealing with.

Thats per mod roundtable discussion in the design phase. The Mod Quality is the "spit and polish" last 1-2 months before release. If you don't know the overall personality of your DoW mod well in advanced before the first public beta then yer in deep trouble anyway. Normally, mod teams know exactly what their aiming for early on and code for it based on the game engine's constraints. My list compromises the final mile.

The file above contains all races, each one is provided with overviews and some additional info.

If you are going to assembe a team of amateur voice actors, here's some basic advice for them.

    1. People tend to talk very monotonous into the microphone, some try keep the pitch low, some others high, but a strange robot-like intonation is typical. Give it some expression.

    2. If something is supposed to be a scream, it better should be. Show no mercy to your neighbors, in the name of the Emperor, it must be done. If you don't scream for real, it doesn't sound realistic. There's no way to evade this law, no matter if you're a proffesional or not.

    3. Try to avoid loud S, T, B, P .. simply consonants. The closer the microphone is, the more it tends to capture "wind sound effects" - breath and air movement produced by the actor. These consonants are hardly audible over larger distances so making them the loudest part of the speech will definitely prove unpleasant. All of this can be reduced in postprocessing but it's easier to avoid than to correct mistakes.

    4. Keep your distance from the microphone. This is closely related to all balance issues with consonants and volume. You can remove all the troubles of trying not to sound like talking into someones year by not talking into it. 20-30 cm should be ok for a dynamic microphone.

    5. Do not apply audio effects to the voice unless you really know what you're doing. This is best left to be done by the sound guy of the mod or someone else in charge of processing all the voices. There's nothing worse than incoherence in communication of your army.

    6. Once you record a phrase, play it few times to see if there anre no disturbing elements that would make it useless for repeated playback.

While designing the speeches for your units, please put the following things into consideration:

    - The most used units should have the most sounds.
    - The most used feature of the unit should have the most sounds and they better be short (not like cultists).
    - Long phrases won't bother you if they're assigned to "attach" or "detach" squad for example.
    - Make sure to declare a way the sound files are gonna be named before the project is started. The average number of sounds per race is 546.75!
    - If you plan to ask for help with the design, you need forums with many visitors - some WH40k forums not related to DOW may prove useful as well.
    - If you plan to ask for help with the voice acting, you need forums browsed by people with the proper equipment - amateur musicians, sounguys, voice actors.
    - By the time you ask for help with the voice acting, your design documents for the actors should be finished
    - Let your voice actors record few phrases and send them to you so you can decide who is going to do this and that. Otherwise you may end up with 15 dreadnoughts, 20 land raiders and no infantry at all. And who would like to be a servitor?

    Thanks..

Remember: TO ALL DoW/WA Mod teams:

o Market yourselves (advertise your existence and keep people knowing that!)
o Keep the community interested with teasers (show a little but not too much and not too frequently)
    o Update Update Update !
o Make Progress - keep your team mates happy and focused! Work on aspects of the mod when others are idle (ie. waiting for mod tools..)
