    A new Plasma

This article from Space.com talks about Cold Plasma and its usage. The Plasma is Cold since they use materials that can change states quickly. Heres the link. I think its interesting, I don't know what it could practically be used for but its interesting. Cold Plasma

    holy. crap.

the only real futuristic technologies ive been following has been FTL theories and laser-based weapons, had no idea this kind of research had even begun.

the fact the article has pictures makes it a winnar.

    This is 133t..... t3h 0wn4g3

Seriously a super duper major breakthrough is about to take place.... no doubt the US will try and get a cold plasma shield around the nation..... then Russia will then.... no more nukes coz no one will be able to use them effectively.....

Ummm... hooray for the application of centuries old ideas?

Guys, change your pants and think this one through.
That doesn’t mean it’s easy or practically achievable, particularly with a cold plasma.

    ...

Any number of technical issues remains to be solved, not the least of which is exactly how to make cold plasmas dense enough to withstand attack.
Which is the article's way of saying, "Cool, huh? But yeah, it's not gonna happen till long after you're dead, if at all."

It's intersting in a "hey, cool" sort of way, but where's all this omfg stuff coming from?

You can't make a plasma shield on land with this technology. Notice how the article specifically only talked about space applications. Decontaminating someone is leagues away from stopping a bullet.

Still the fact that cold plasma can be generated is interesting. Cold fusion anyone

I'd like to point out the fact that this cold plasma can also be used to decontaminate bio & chemo weapons, neutralizing the chmical agents and even leathal to bacterial spores. THat in itsef is enough to go WOW about.

You can't get fusion with literally cold palsma. That'd take insane densities (our current fusion experiments are the exact opposite: less dense and hotter than the core of the sun for example)

    Note the " "

    Btw Cold fusion. Wired article.

Ergo, "cold plasma" could, possibly, be usefull for "cold fusion". not saying it is, i'm simply speculating.

/waits for squiddy and starfisher to jump on me about this and that...

Cold plasma has hardly any fully ionized nuclei in it, so hardly anything to fuse. Cold plasma is more like ionized gas, whereas "hot plasma" is mostly fully ionized nucley and the electrons they let go...

Forget the solid plasma shields. Why did everyone ignore the radar cloaking applications?

Cheap, light, practical in the foreseeable future. A device to make all radar detection tech useless.

This is hard sci-fi that is way more exciting than "shields."

Yay for yet another thread featuring an interesting scientific development, attracting uninformed, howling fanboys making idiotic predictions of imminent breakthroughs.

but wouldnt some one notice a big flying purple blob in the sky, thats not detectable by radar?(asuming the pics are taken with a normal camera, that plasma looks purple and glowy)

Not necessarily. The plasma could be inside the vehicle but around any internal radar reflectors.

Internal radar reflectors such as, say, the vehicle?

Cold plasma is *anything* but new. Hey, you can create it in your own home!
Sure, it's got a different name, but it's plasma, and it's cold. Cold plasma.

Wow, this is awesome. I wonder if it could be made to stop bullets..?
I had no idea this was even going on, this could be a major breakthrough in the history of humanity.

Sigh.. I highly doubt you'll ever manage to create a sufficiently dense cold plasma to dissipate the energy from, or deflect kinetic bullets. Absorb microwaves and/or radar, sure. Act as a semi-"cloak", sure. (Not optical, though).

Dissipate Laser beams? Yes, possibly. At least drop the power levels significantly.
But, that'd require a *very* dense plasma.

However, the other applications (disinfection, cleaning, etc) are very real.

    Another over-hyped idea, methinks.

I think people are going on and on about all this because it is new. Some have said that they have never heard of it before and letting the minds wonder at all the possitbilities of this stuff. I only found it interesing and thought I be nice and share.

Agreed. Maybe there's than article some where on an update, if there's anything new.

As for the anti-radar effect, it's as good as total invisibility in space, because of the huge distances involved and that it is unlikely you will be able to directly see what other ship you want to identify. Look at satellites we send out to the outer solar system.

I also wish to ask: is Starfisher's sole purpose on these forums, to deflate threads and generally sounding like an annoyed old man that whines and is afraid of change? No wonder he sucks at jumping in Doom 3; he probably changes his mind halfway across.

    @ starfisher (& pit97)

Fishy, if we were all sceptics, no one would perform those idiotoc experiments that you lot oppose, that 80% of the time are idiotic, but the remaining 20% of them are actually usefull.
