Ummm NO.Periodically being able to call in paratroopers would be a nice addition as well.
#151
#152
calling in paratroops would only be acceptable if it took them four hours to arrive from england. having a few trucks or tanks show up at the edge of the map would be way more preferable.
#153
but starting a mission with a paradrop and having to fight the entire mission with those troops and the paradropped supplies (that you would have to find) could be interesting. Not for every mission, maybe just for one.
#154
I assume DoW is setting the trend for future Relic games in terms of gore?missing legs, missing heads, shot wounds, blood on uniforms, pools of blood around the dead, tanks smoking and exploding. it also seems that bodies and armor stick around after they are killed and damaged.![]()
Anything you said in reply was fine, except the same line you've said before, that in a mission by mission basis, Homeworld 2 is better than Homeworld. That statement(which is what it is, your hardly saying its your opinion, your basically telling it to me like a fact) is the only thing that really pisses me off, but each to his own.I can hardly change your opinion.
Hobbes! She stumbled into the perimeter of wisdom!!! Run!!
#156
You're correct, it is my opinion... which is what I thought we were discussing... our opinions.
Now, you saying that my opinion is endorsed by Relic...
TBS:
If the game is set in historically accurate normandy from around the time of the D-Day campaign, then the only opportunity for a parachute drop is in the opening phase of the battle itself. I don't believe there were any paradrop reinforcements during the normandy campaign.
#157
WAit...Soul said that the Graphics are BETTER than DOW's? o_O Gorier? Actual Destructible terrain ala' Total Annihilation!?
Okay, I hereby dub the Relic people as INSANE. In a GOOD way. :sprint:
I just got the pc gamer and it looks awesome. Fully destructable everything, if the infantry get hit in the leg they writhe around on the ground and if hit in the head they drop dead. The AI uses cover very well, in the demo they were shown, a tank was going down a street that had nazis in the building flanking it and they opened fire at the tank, so the tank turned and fired into the building blowing a huge hole into it. The survivors then took cover around the opening that the tank made.
It looks really great and if I have time later I'll scan some pics and post em.
#159
I don't think you should due to Copyright reasons. It's equal to warezing laast time I checked. Would be nice though if we could have the snappies.
If this turns out well, it could be the equivalent of Call of Duty/ Band Of Brothers of RTSs.![]()
#160
actually even if you have time, i suggest you dont post them... it is a copyright issue and is not allowed. otherwise dont you think uber would have put them up...It looks really great and if I have time later I'll scan some pics and post em.
um in TA the trees would burn and maybe a black spot would appear on the ground after an explosion... in this game an artillery shell will cause a massive crater, buildings will fall in on themselves when hit etc etc.
I was thinking that might be illegal to do and forgot to ask but now I know.
#162
So...when do us Non-subscribers get to be able to buy the next PC gamer?
Couple days probably.
#164
Is it just me, or according to Uberjumper and Soulblighter, Company of Heroes will fix the design flaws that plagued Dawn of War? (Bullets/missles shoot through buildings and hills/mountains, lack of proper cover, limited use of cover..etc.)
#165
Well the first thing would most likely be fixed if it was a totally new engine, unless Relic wants to revamp the revamp of the IC engine![]()
#166
It talks about 'new technology' (animation, ai etc)... but from the looks of it i would say its a whole new engine. One of the screens shows tracer fire 'pinging' off a tank as well. Cool stuff.
#167
Soul and Uber, you two are evil. You're tempting us with the precious but we can't see it.. We hatess you fot it! We wantss the preciousss...
:jk:
I'll wait for it. I'd love to see it for myself when I get that article.![]()
#168
If the infantry die or get injured in different ways depending on where and by what they are hit, then is this true about vehicles as well? Can I perhaps knock off a track instead of destroying the entire tank?
#169
Based on the screenshots and descriptions, this seems to be a given. Destroyable terrain doesn't work well if the bullets pass through :-)
Is it just me, or according to Uberjumper and Soulblighter, Company of Heroes will fix the design flaws that plagued Dawn of War? (Bullets/missles shoot through buildings and hills/mountains, lack of proper cover, limited use of cover..etc.)
#170
Will bullets hit the ground if they go too far? I would love to see soldiers running amidst dirt spraying up from bullets that missed their targets.
Also I am curious about the explosion effects. While DoW and HW had nice splosions I want something really gritty and encompassing here. I want to be SCARED by artillery.
#171
If you need me, I'll be camping out at my local magazine outlet. Or at least stalking some of the customers.
You know, just until this PC Gamer issue is released.
#172
Rated S for "Saving Private Ryan"![]()
Remember: you're a blogger. Pretense is your co-pilot.
#173
from the article:I want to be SCARED by artillery.
It even gives a little detail towards strategy. For instance using artillery to cause craters in the gound so as your infantry move forward there will be cover available, so they dont get destroyed.Company of Heroes uses a rag-doll physics engine that makes incoming artillery land on the battlefield like the fist of God - a direct hit from an artillery shell will send soldiers flying through the air, slam them into nearby walls, and even leave their corpses strewn across rooftops.
#174
please do tell me they mention smokescreens.
#175
You know what? 10$ says that the first mod for this title will be DoW.
Also; I wonder if ammunition will be a factor in this game. For instance, will infantry/artilery/whatever eventually run out of shots? Or perhaps get weaker over time unless supplied?
Just, you know, since they're going for uber-realism in so many ways.
#176
it doesnt say molo, but this was the very first look. DoW had smoke screens, and considering infantry will have grenades, it would not surprise me if you could use smoke grenades.
Well, I didn't like either Homeworld, so I'm only here because of DoW.
@ Smokey - *evil stare*
I'm getting conflicting info, is it a new engine, or the DoW engine with upgrades?
#179
Given everything that's beens tated in this thread so far i would have to say new engine, or only basic scraps incorporated from other relic engines. Actually I would be surprised were it written completely from scratch, even 'new' engines borrow no-sense-to-write-it-again parts from old engines. But the capabilities described almost insist on new engine.
#180
its a new engine. i just mentioned the dow thing because they had infantry have grenades and had smoke screen option for one of their vehicles.
sorry to give off the conflicting stuff, but the graphics, terrain, and shots of rag doll physics are just something else so i was trying to compare to what relic has previously done.
when the issue hits stands and more screens become available... not to mention the E3 stuff considering the game says it will be out in early 2006 (which = if they stay on target they only get one E3 to show this thing off), i am sure you will all understand.
on a side note i wonder if relic and those in the know within thq were laughing as age of empires 3 did interview after interview, countless previews and screenshots explaining that what they are doing is the best looking rts out there and would be leaps and bounds ahead of the competition... all the while relic was working on this little gem for god knows how long.
Realistic, huh? Anything balanced can't be realistic...
And curse you all! I just forked(sporked? :>) out all my money to get 9550 and play DoW, and you say CoH will have even better graphics!
Oh well, there's always Screenshot Thread![]()
#182
#183
relic's pretty good with scalable engines. At the very least, I'm sure anyone who can play DoW at max settings will be able to play CoH at reasonable settings.
#184
/me waits for the first "spooge driver error" message for CoH
#185
Ok, I managed to survive two new Relic rts games without an upgrade... This one will most likely force me to do one finally :/
#186
I must be getting old, I find the thought of realistic injury and death upsetting.
I hope the cyber wives and sim children of the polygonal soldiers you lose will beg for virtual alms outside the computer generated camp gates.
#187
I find ragdoll physics and the uses of them disturbing, not to mention realistic death and injury...
Doom's 30 odd pixels for a pile of meat was convincing enough that you'd killed the enemy.
*mildly disgusted with negative price discrimination*
#188
I imagine that gore settings will be completely optional, if they have any sense.
i mean... a couple check boxes
*Blood
*Dismemberment
It stands to reason that both can be controlled in an on/off fashion relatively easily.
#189
If this game is going to be realistic, it'll need realistic deaths. And in war "realistic deaths" equates to "extremely gory deaths".
@Moe - and the error reports will be posted be in Technical Discussions instead of the proper forum ;p.
#190
realistic deaths make you a little more respectful, i think. so do small amounts of troops under your command.
the more respectful you are, the less likely you are to waste them.
Unless in multiplayer. Then WINNING IS ALL THAT MATTERS!!!11
#192
Online multiplayer, yes.
Lan mp is about fun, not winning, although there is a good competition as to who gets the highest kills ect...
And i always respected my Tesla troopers. Well worth the 500$, unsquishable...fried meat so they don't get hungry, place them near to a tesla coil and you have fried tanks...![]()
I just read the article in pcgamer yesterday, they talked all about havoc physics and destructable terrain, but said absolutley nothing about gameplay. Is it going to production based? Or like ground control? I always thought it would be cool and more realistic if you converted existing buildings to be your headquaters, armory, field hospital instead of just building things, and your units came form roads and other insertion points on the maps edges instead of from inside the "barracks".
Judging from the screenies there isnt any dismeberment DeadlyShoe.
That seems to be to the contrary of what soul stated:
missing legs, missing heads, shot wounds, blood on uniforms, pools of blood around the dead, tanks smoking and exploding. it also seems that bodies and armor stick around after they are killed and damaged.
#196
some of the stuff i said could be seen in screens the rest were hinted at in the preview (body parts missing). its one thing to talk about it, its another to show the gore (they have a small shot on page 56, on what a village looks like after a village).
"O xein angellein Lakedaimoniois hoti tede

yup
#199
Normandy? If there's one battle that's been done to death within WWII it's Normandy. How many games do you find based around Kursk? What about Al Alamein? Torburk? Stalingrad? Not as much as Normandy I'll tell you that. Hopefully this game will include the Brits and the Germans will be playable because if this game is based soley around the US I'm going to boycot it out of principle.
In Soviet Russia, forums moderate YOU!
#200
It would be ludicrous for an rts to have one playable side.
