Why is it that average termies have a higher close combat attack than assault termies? Along with storm bolters? o.o Makes ya wonder. Plus, power fists ignore armor.

powerfists "ignoring armour" is a TT convention that doesnt carry through to DoW - its just represented by a high damage rating. What makes assault termies better than vanilla termies is CC is that their hits have a stun effect...and I believe that they also receive an extra 10% damage reduction to represent their storm shields.
The stun effect means that a squad of tthem can kill an avatar or bloodthirster without taking any losses (taken in a vacuum obviously - in normal gameplay the enemy will have other troops shooting at them).
Assault Termies only do 4.86 DPS to monster_high as well, makes you realise how effective chainstun is when you see them drop uber units.
Well, actually, Powerfist DOES ignore armor. It even says so in the Powerfist upgrade for Sergeants.
Vespire, the in-game tooltips and the manual are both very misleading. Powerfists, like all weapons in this game has specific penetration ratings against the different types of armor (there are roughly 12 classes of armor).
This isn't Tabletop or D&D there isn't any sort of armor save or roll applied.

its best if you ignore what the tooltips and the manual say. The game doesnt use armour saving throws so theres no armour for the fist to ignore. Each weapon has a specific penetration value against each armour type in the game (stormboys and the defiler autocannon are missing some of these entries and so do 0 damage to some targets) - the powerfist doesnt have 100% penetration vs any armour type.
EDIT - well damn, stepsongrapes beat me to it.
the main reason WHY the in game damage rating can be misleading is bc it does not take into account armor penetration, which is arguably the most important aspect of damage in DOW, oops... just like the last 4 posters have said. an assault terminator's hammer has much higher armor penetration than regular terminator power fists, and they do 10+ dps more vs almost all target types.
that and, as TBS said, they stun and have a 10% defensive melee bonus with their storm shields. assault terminators are far superior in melee to a regular terminator.
just for your info...
powerfist damage: http://www.tc.umn.edu/~plim0005/dows...terminator.txt
hammer damage: http://www.tc.umn.edu/~plim0005/dows...der_hammer.txt
as you can see, hammers are far superior to powerfists.
But overall, the regular termi is better because of the assult cannon and ranged firepower (at least in my opinion).
I know there's different armor types, I just figured when it said it ignored armor, it meant it was basically 50 armor penetration against EVERYTHING.
Ok thats it, I've had enough. :Slap:This isn't Tabletop or D&D there isn't any sort of armor save or roll applied.
STOP MAKING REFERENCES TO D&D !!!!!:damnu:

"I know there's different armor types, I just figured when it said it ignored armor, it meant it was basically 50 armor penetration against EVERYTHING."
Nope, when I look over the terminator's powerfist file, I see alot of values below 50%; even one 6% value for tp_monster_high (bloodthirster and avatar). The manual and the tool tips can be and are very misleading with the information they provide.
What happens in Greenville, SC stays in Greenville, SC.
[vertigo] you mean 6% vs monster_high, ie avatar and bloodthirster.
however, the thunder hammers do have at least 50% armor penetration vs all infantry types, including 99% vs monster_med and 93% vs infantry_med. thats pretty much as close to ignoring armor as it comes.
the thing about DOW is that there is no consistancy between damage and armor penetration between different units. for example a squiggoth has 2 twin big shootas with 300-400 damage per hit, but the armor penetration vs infantry is only about 3-4%. the end result is a mediocre weapon vs infantry that is similar to a regular big shoota with damage 20-30 and armor penetration of 38%. it is more confusing when breaking down the numbers, but it achievs the same end result.
another example is how a marine sergeant has the same penetration with a chainsword, power sword, and power fist, despite the fact that youd think they would increase as you upgrade weapons... in these instances the developers seemed to have decided to simply increase the damage to give the same effect as if they were penetrating armor easier. either way, again it gives the same result.
other times it works like youd think. for ex tankbustas have close to 100% armor penetration vs veh_light and med. plasma guns do what the tooltip says w/high penetration vs heavy armor and slugga boyz do in fact have (more than) "minor AP" like the manual says w/84% penetration vs heavy_med.
by the way, warp spiders DO completely ignore infantry_med armor w/100% penetration.
