Gamespot E3 2005 Live Stage Demo

You guys have to take a look at this new live stage demo at gamespot:

    http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/...ult/media.html

The bunkers look really tough - better than the bunkers in Starcraft. You can even move around between the bunkers without getting out.

The Hellhound looks amazing with its flame thrower!

the dev(?) also indicated that the IG may not be the last race!!! It would be cool if this franchise lasted a looong time. (the xpac is not even out yet and i'm drooling over a DOW2 or more xpansions!?)

some different things than the last one, but we now know that the bassilisks only has to pay for some heavy duty ammo, not normal ammo,

I really like the direction they are going with the IG. I was expecting a pop system similar to SM/CSM so its really great to see them changing things up a bit. Clearly the IG arent going to play at all like the other human races of DOW.

black ranger: theres two videos on the page he linked, the top one we've seen before...the second one, labelled "Live Stage Demo", was filmed today at E3 - it hasnt been posted on these forums before now.

and yes, he did indicate that they would be interested in adding mroe races in future expansion packs...cool if they do, but dont take that as a guaruntee that they will.

Oh, and not one but TWO of the questions asked were from irritating people asking if their race was going to be in the game ¬_¬. I felt like slapping them...I had to slap my monitor instead.

Blah, why September? Most people are in school and can't play the game!

Too bad the game can't come in the summer full ready to go.

  13. #13
Yeah I was thinking the same exact thing TBS.

Bad enough that he clearly explained that IG was the only one, but after explaining it a second time they still don't get it...

We need a stick and to beat them with it.

So you can put upto 3 squads into a bunker and each squad activates different bunker weapons eh? Cool.

I asked about the Kill Cam and whether or not the player is able to choose either of the "Order" or "Disorder" races for the single player campaign, or if they play both races. Said differently, if I choose to play the campgain as the IG, will I play as only the IG or will I play as the IG and the Eldar?

I guess they either didn't have time, or my questions were too wordy. Probably a mixture of both. :/

OTC: The IG units looked pretty sweet. I really like the way they are handling the bunkers. It should be quite interesting to play.

    yeah:

1 squad = lasguns (he actually said "lascannons" but I assume that that was a slip of the tongue because he said they were effective against light infantry, and lascannons are anti vehicle weapons)

    2 squads = lasguns + plasma guns

3 squads = lasguns + plasma guns + heavy bolters

you can do the same with chimeras, although its unclear whether they will fire lasguns/plasma guns/heavy bolters out of the chimera or just fire their normal lasguns.

  18. #18
    totally freakin awesome.....

Johnny explicted stated that IG will perfectly suit Turtler style gameplay.....:wow: i already have enough problems with turret farms (easily overcome but highly annoying) and now this?!

the ability to move troops within bunker systems is pretty cool. it explains how they will be able to defend SPs more effectively as opposing to just building turret defences. i just hope these bunkers don't have a webgate-style placement ability otherwise say goodbye to eldar Critical Location turret farming and hello to IG "i-am-going-to-camp-some-bunkers-here" style turtling.

glad to hear clarification on how the Basilisk operates with regard to paying for ammunititon (only drains resources when firing special EarthShaker rounds which i assume are uber artillery shells).

other than that, WA is gonna be sweeeeeeeeeeeet.

The Preacher: see - those were good questions. Instead we had this:

"Will Necrons be in the game?"
"No, weve put a lot of work into bringing an entire new race to the expansion called the imperial guard...blah blah blah"
"will Tyranids be in the game?"
"wtf did I just say?" *takes out a wooden plank and starts beating the host in the face*

ok that last part didnt happen...but it should have done.

  20. #20
technically some of those questions came from comatose vegetable audience members via T-mobile Sidekick not from the host....

    Eat doodoo road kill.

Plus, there's a difference between bunkers that require cap/guys to be in to shoot (ala SC) and turrets all over the place.

The Hellhound looks so awesome, even when it was finally destroyed it lit the other units around it on fire from the explosion. And the Ogryn kill animations were great, like when one of them jumps in the air and smashes the guy down with his gun, and the way they used their guns like clubs. Sentinels look great to.

Are the regular guard troops upgradeable, because when they were in the bunker they just seemed to randomly get different weapons

I wonder if they will need to make a completely new set of ladder maps in order to properly balence the new IG race. Johnny stated that the drawback to the defensive nature of the IG would obviously be loosing map control, however many of the current maps have SPs so close to your base that they are easy to defend without spreading out. Think of playing VOK against IG bunkers, attempting to tech faster then them would be virtually your only option, and with the IGs bunkers also helping their pop cap and perhaps tech tree to some extent (im thinking like waaggh banners) it could be quite problematic.

CrazyThumbs, I believe the bunkers have mounted weapons (think like having a lasgun mounted on the bunker, or a plasma gun mounted on the bunker) what is fired out of the bunker doesnt depend on the equipment of your squads (although more gaurdsmen may produce more lasgun fire like in the chimera) but on the number of squads.

Probably yes, some of the ungarrisoned guardsmen were using grenade launchers as well and on table top the IG can certainly use heavy weapons of different types.

    Gotta hate that interviewer!

At the very beginning of the interview Jonathan said he was gonna show us what they changed to the tech tree of the existing races, but at the end of the demo the interviewer interrupted him *aaaargh!*

You couldn’t be more right TBS.

The gamespot host should know better than to ask questions like that, regardless of whom they’re coming from. All he had to do was skip over them and ask the good questions. It’s called common sense.

The video was very good, from what we did see without the annoying and unwisely timed questions. The questions should have been asked after the demonstration; again the pinhead interviewer steps in. You could tell Jonathan was trying to focus on show casing each unit, he most likely would have gotten to more if it wasn’t for the bad interview.

I’m done ranting, WA is going to ROCK!!!!!

I don't really like the whole transporting of troops between bunkers just happening without any animations. It'd be cool if before you can transport troops between bunkers, you need a "trench" upgrade that forms a line between the two destinations. When then troops leave the bunker, they travel along the trench, firing at nearby enemies if ordered to, and moving along. It would add a defense bonus, but wouldn't protect them completely. Oh man, maybe if you could upgrade the trenches to have random machine gunners and such...ah, the love I have for trench warfare.

Cool interview. Frankly, Jonathan is an awesome guy. I hope there is a second part to that interview because they didnt talk about the re-balancing nor the campaign, i have a feeling we'll see more of that in the coming days. Btw, the interviewer is a duffus, or most likely been high on something.

Furthermore, it was also good to see some of the units I hadnt seen before like that Imperial Captain, I like the design. I hope IG doesnt turn out to be too defense oriented. They have the equipment to do some nasty assaults. Now that I think about it, most of their weapons are actually assault oriented, like tanks for example, or artillery, or Ogryn, or everything else.

Burns: from what I can gather the gamespot people cap all the interviews at 15 minutes (there are a LOT of exhibitors at E3) so if they dont get through everything in that 15 minute slot then thats that.

i dont have the slightest clue about how programmers code for games but i am pretty sure that it would require a LOT of work to code for these so-called "linking" trenches between bunkers. have you even considered if a bunker was placed at a critical location situated in the middle of the map and was then linked to bunkers back at the main base?? not to mention the pathfinding issues for several larger units if there are trenches systems entwining the entire map in the middle of streets/roads/paths etc.

ie. not a good idea (sorry).

Possibly the bunkers have to be within a certain range of each other- or units
    teleport from bunker to bunker.

Would be nice to be able to choose which bunker weapon a squad could fire from it.

thats obviosuly a balance issue - lasguns < plasma < heavy bolters (presumeably), if you could just put one squad in and have them firing the heavy bolters then you would be able to put up a much stronger defence for lower cost.

I don't really like the Sentinels. They look neat, and are pretty good sprinters (The kenyans of the machines), but something is off about them.

  41. #41
I love the look of the sentinals (bit of an at-at rip off, but thats probalby a good thing..)...

Anyway, personally I think lasguns<bolters<plasma and although he does say lasguns come first, he only said that with three squads you get all three, I don't think we can assume the plasma come before the bolters (even though he mentions them in that order)...

Hmmm, wish I could download that movie though, the quality looks sooo much better than the other movies we've seen so far...

The Baneblade's main battle cannon seems to be very accurate. More accurate than the battle cannon on the Leman Russ. And the round that is fired from the main battle cannon is WOAH! INCOMING! BIG ONE!!!! KABOOM!!!!

At ~5:30 he starts doing the bunker bit. The lower bunker (2 squads) seems to be only putting out las & plasma fire. But without a high-res verson I don't think we will be able to tell for sure.

Did you guys notice the Ogryns melee attacks? The have special attacks like heroes. You can see them jump and hammer down with their guns and a few berserkers go flying. They are going to be CC monsters.

As for the Bunker System, it may be kind of like the GLA's in CC generals where you can have a set number of squads in the trenches and swap them between each bunker. 3 squads in a chimera though! And is the Leman Russ going to be one of the tanks, he didnt even mention it, not even saying "oh and the leman russ from the first game is there too."

sounds like IG will get alot of crappy infantry squads designed to make other things better, sounds nice and fluffy, but will the scout rushed be replaced by the guardsmen rush of blinding doom?

It's interesting to note that a squad of Khorne beserkers was taken out in CC by a squad of Ogryns. Of course we can't judge the ballance of the game through a preveiw video but it's still pretty funny to see.
