RDN, modding, and what in the heck does this thing do?

    Hey all!

After the good fun of our IC-University and with the imminent release of the RDN tools for Impossible Creatures, I'd like to invite you to ask whatever modding questions you might have, and I'll do my best to try and help you out.
I encourage you to read through the phonebook sized amount of documentation included in the RDN downloads, as there's almost more information in there than a human can digest... and if that doesn't solve it then please speak up and we'll see what we can do.

I specifically know about the technical aspects of the art side of things in IC, including anything about the creatures, the fx system, or structures/world objects. chavez knows tons about the mission editor, and I'm sure we could wrangle up a programmer in a pinch if it was a real emergency.

    ...

just a short while until the tools are out.

I haven't been able to go through the docs yet (they require something that can read word files and for some reason windows thinks i have nothing that can read doc files, maybe its correct about that)

If you bury an object partially, the shade remains the same when you see it in the editor, for example when i try to put in a rock where only the top is visible you still get the complete shade around the rock. Is this only in the editor or will the shade be wrong in game to?

I also find it hard to get a feeling on what a good or bad map is. But i guess you can only get that by playing the game and finding out for yourself. Still its nice to play around with it

ps. As I mentioned to Ron and Darwin at ICU, it might be a good idea to put those docs out in PDF format. I'll look at putting up a copy next week... I have access to Adobe Acrobat Writer at work.

    PDF files

Here are all the docs I could find in the IC MOD pack in pdf version, the zip is all of the documents compressed in one:
    http://gene.science.uva.nl/~asborsbo/Relic/

btw. they were converted with a free pdf write utility so pm me if something is missing/wrong. The only thing I saw which is wrong is the font for the Titles of all the documents but that shouldn't be a problem I think :-)

I have a question for you. (I am still downloading the tools...narrowband=bad.) Can turn based gameplay be implemented through scripting?

    Gnome,

    Couple of things for you.

    1. tooltips, as Uber suggested.

    2. The Edit/Delete anims menus under NISlets menu in the mission editor should only be enabled when you've already clicked on new. Perhaps when you click on "New Camera Anim" it automatically goes into Point mode.

    3. The mission editor tutorial says to "check off the loop checkbox", which suggests you *dont* have it turned on, when in fact you have to have it turned on

    I'll have more later

Being unable to undo texture placement in the mission editor is kind of painfull. I know more than a few times I've accidently stamped something in the middle of an area I didnt want it and then the cover up of it made it look bad

erhm with "check off" they mean "turn it on" (I think ):
    check off
    phrasal verb [M]
to mark (names or items on a list) as correct or as having been dealt with
He checked off their names on the list and then said that they could get on the coach.

Yes but it could be worded better for this situation :-D

Dragon, I know, but the wording can be slightly confusing, I'm just mentioning it becuase something like "Make sure the loop box is checked" reads a lot better.
