It's things like that keep me from ever visiting America.

When my parents had to go to Canada for a business trip, they had to book a non direct flight, making sure that one of their stops is not America.

I have nothing against that country but at the moment the American custom officials according to many travellers, are huge dick heads.

There's one time where this Malaysian traveller went to America to study. He had some packet curry dust in his bag. When his luggage left inspection, he found his packet curry dust punctured with holes.

Just went to Sea-Tac airport a couple days ago to see my cousin off. I havent flown for a long time but security seemed pretty much exactly the same as it used to only now the line is 10 times longer.

well, if you think gas/petrol for your car was expensive, imagine the costs to airline companies...pretty soon there might not BE any airports. okay, a little over dramatic, but you get my point.

The DoJ's position on rendition and like practices is such obvious bullshit that it makes me heartsick.

    /me sighs

The Maher Arar case is disgusting on the face of it, google it if you want.

When I went to the US last summer, I was singled out at every airport and had to go through one of those special "comprehensive" checks - taking off your shoes, every piece of luggage opened by hand, etc.

However, I have to say I was impressed with the personnel who performed these searches. They were all very polite and professional. They also showed quite a bit of humor, one of them told me to "please remove any metallic items you are carrying such as keys, watches, cheese" and you could actually see him counting down in his mind before I went "wtf?". Another one joked that she would have to confiscate my coke on the grounds that she was thirsty.

yall think it is hard going to the U.S. try being turkish by heratige and being harassed every time you go to the airport. they have supposedly random checks but when the people were being pulled out of the line i have noticed that almost all of then look middleeastern, muslim and so on, it is shit the way they sterotype! so i think this is
obvious bullshit that it makes me heartsick
    as TheDeadlyShoe said.

Hm, apparently the computer flags random tickets for thorough inspection, however I don't know if it takes nationality into account. I do not look middle eastern at all, neither does my family, yet we were still pulled out.

Good point, i understand that but i mean through everthing else we have been discriminated against and have extensive searchs on mainly me and my dad since my mom has a different last name, but to add to this my dad has a hip replacement and a metal plate in his arm. but i still think there are problems in the government and security, including europe. you saw what happened to that guy who wasn't even the terrorist he was shot 7or 8 times.

    thats wrong.

you saw what happened to that guy who wasn't even the terrorist he was shot 7or 8 times.
The fool fled the police into a subway station one day after an attempted terrorist bombing of the subway, wearing suspicious clothing. What would you have done if you'd been the cops? Asked him nicely to stop again? It was sad, but I don't believe the cops to be at fault.

As a non-citizen, I get searched a lot at American airports. I've no problem with it - like Moe, I've found them to be professional and usually apologetic. To me, it is an acceptable infringement on personal privacy.

If you don't like the searches, there are buses and trains.

I was more pointing out the lack of any rights you have now, they can starve you, keep you awake etc and cause damage to you acording to this.

Oh and the guy who ran away wasnt he chased by non uniformed officers with guns, dunno aboat you but I could easily see myself panicking and doing a runner.

...and "suspicous" clothing is hardly a reason for several headshots.

i don't mean to drag this thread off topic but

Whilst his death was unfortunate, he brought it on himself, running from armed cops (they would have shouted 'police, stop! btw) is bad enough, but to run onto the tube the day after a bombing attempt was just stupid, it didn't need to happen that way, but it did, get over it.

If i'd had been in the policemans boot's i'd have done the same thing, the guy was an unknown with suspected links to terrorists and he'd just ran onto a tube train. It doesn't take a genious to work out the possible outcome if they hadn't shot him, they just could not take that sort of chance.

    Back ontopic

I'm heading out to the us on tuesday, final destenation is south america, i've a feeling there'll be more searches on the way back to the us from south america

My experience with American airport security hasn't been all that bad actually. They usually tend to stick by the rules, even when doing so isn't very intelligent: I saw them run someone's $10,000 workstation laptop through the X-ray machine and fried it even though the guy offered to disassemble it. Sure the supervisor was happy with the bill. If you really want to make them jump for some reason put lead crystal in your suitcase: it shows up as C-4 on the x-ray.

Sadly I suspect that there is plenty more of the sort of BS that Maher Arar suffered coming with the unconstitutional Patriot Act scheduled to be renewed. I'm just glad that since I am an American citizen they cannot abrogate my constitutional rights.
