    The real tabletop game

Well after playing this I remember back in 7th grade my freind bought warhammer begginers set and gave me the elders and he took chaos space marines. We never really were very mature when making them. But now that Im older im wondering could somone help me get started in the things I need to get started in playing this tabletop game.

Links would be appreciated. Ill have maybe 150 to spend on all of it, and I am from the states.

Get the warhammer 40k rulebook first and then plan out what army you want and stick with it for a while. Simple.

You need some very basic stuff to begin playing. If you know someone with a rulebook, you don't even have to bother buying that. Basically you'll need the codex of the army you want to play (they're all very well balanced, you'd only need to change stratagies from army to army).

From that you'll need a bare minimum of 1 HQ choice (it'll make sense when you have the codex) and 2 troop choices to begin playing.

    Not that difficult no?

Also make sure when picking an army, make sure you chose a army you like the look of it, thats one of the most important things, i think anyway.

How about the prices, I mean would 150 get me a good sized army and beggining? and are chaos marines a good choice, like the way they are demonic warriors who raise demons.

First of all you need to get the chaos codex then after that you need to plan out your army before buying anything.
Heres the best website to see prices on the minatures.
    http://us.games-workshop.com/games/4...og/default.htm
After planning it out send it to the fine fellows in the table top forum.
    http://forums.relicnews.com/forumdisplay.php?f=109

    Then you can buy miniatures.

If your gonna play 40k get the battle for macragge set, it is a good investment, you get the rules you need, blast tampletes and a flamer tamplete and a measure stick, plus if you decide to play with eitehr Tyranids Or Marines you get models, but if your not playing either one trade the models off or sell them to people who want them.

If you're starting by yourself $150 will get you the basics. (In American Dollars)

    Rulebook - $50.00
    Chaos Space Marines Codex- $20.00
    Chaos Space Marines Kit -$25.00 x 2= 50.00 (2 Troops Required)
Chaos Lord - $10 (HQ required)

    Total: $130

If he just buys the rulebook seperately then he doesn't get the blast/ordinance/flamer templates and measuring sticks. You also have to factor in paints as well.

By "good sized" army I'd assume you're looking for something in the 1000-1500 point range, and no $150 won't get you that.

you might find some pretty good deals on ebay, but you will most likely need some paintstripper too...

as someone said earlier, the best way to start is first to find a friend. then you can either both chip in and get the battle for mccragge set, and learn the basic rules and stuff, then either sell the models on ebay, and start getting a different army (codex first, tells you everything you need to know about your army) or if you like the army from the set, expand on that one.
    it's been a while!

Macragge set will start you off, its enough to play a game with a friend and get used to 40k before investing in an army, i still suggest the macragge set considering you get the rules (not rulebook, the ruleboook is like 50$ hardback, and you really don't need that one, but you get a cheap paperback rulebook in the battle for macragge box set) you get a marine tactical squad 6 or 8 genestealers and some terma gaunts, and a few spore mines, if you buy the set and don't like the armys you can trade them or sell them at your local shop.

The rulebook has a blast/ordinance/flamer template on the last few pages so he could make his own.

But you are right about the paints, he has to buy paints as well.

If you go with Game Workshop this is the minimum you need (I'm ignoring the primer and other tools)

    Warhammer 40000 Paint Set - $20.00
    Paint Brush Set - $15.00
    Super Glue - $8.00

    Total: $43.00

So $150.00 is not enough to start out. Personally I recommend that you goto an art store to pick up the supplies. It's cheaper.

Each unit has a point assign to the figure.

A Space Marine cost 15 points
A Chaos Lord cost 60 points
A Choas Space Marine cost 14 points

On average the most popular army has a total of 500, 1000 and 2000 points.

Have you decided on a race yet? Are you going with Chaos?

Of course, they cant put up the exact prices and listings but if you use the GW site to find what you want, you can go back to this site and tell them what you want. This will help you get more for your money.
Read up on and check out the different armies and find the one you like. After that, I would suggest buying it's codex and then maybe one of the box armies would be a good start.
To do it "right" you will, of course, have to buy new stuff as you go along here and there to flesh out your force. The starter box should give you a good force to start with and use till you get more stuff to add for bigger and bigger games and stuff to trade in and out.

thanks for all the help and been thinking about it and I am going with space marines, seems like they are best suited for me. The paints, I will buy a model paint at this hobby store, for 50 bucks you get what the modelers use has a bunch of colors but I am mainly already no I am going for black and blood red, not sure on insignie yet. Primer shouldnt be much and I think I have some in my garage.

Go to Wall Mart if you have one handy or any hobby shop. There, you can usually get decent ceramic paints that work pretty well. At 50 cents to 1 1/2 dollers a bottle, its much cheaper.

This is a good site to get stuff if you are in Canada. But if you live in the USA tack the price shone and -15 to 20 $ then you will get the price in US(assuming you can get the stuff sent to the US).

That is a good idea. You can also sell off the bug models out of it to one of the swarms of people building bug armies now. Or find someone else who is buying it and just trade your bugs for his marines.

    Evil had it right with the link to The War Store. Neal and his family rock and they will definately help you out. Now, with Neal's 20% discount, you could spend your $150 as follows;

    Battle For Macragge $36
    Codex: Space Marines $16
    Space Marine Battleforce $88
    ====>$140
    (all prices after dicount)

The battleforce box isn't as good a deal as it used to be when it came w/ Assault Marines and Bikes, but it's still decent, giving you $125 worth of product for $110. Count the 20% discount for shopping at The War Store and you're all set, bringing 30 marines and a razorback to the table, which is very respectable. Save the money for paint & such for another time, just get some glue and get them assembled. Save a few dollars up and buy only the paints necessary to get things underway later.
