    Easy Freehand Art

For todays installment, I'll show how to paint the classic "chaos screaming faces" on a banner. You can use this tutorial on any surface, really.

Start by painting and highlighting the banner as you would normally, without any extra designs. You can never tell what bits may end up peeking through. In this stage, I included carefully painting on the main skull. Once you finish with your basic banner (my basecoat was Scab Red), paint clusters of blobs (2 small ones above a larger one) with a darker color (I mixed a bit of black with my Scab Red) to give the basic shapes of the faces.

Next, fill in the gaps between the faces with Red Gore, leaving a slight line of Scab Red near the dark.

Now, with Blood Red, start picking out the lines of the faces. Take a look at pictures of faces to see where the ridges generally are, and try to mimic them. Also, paint small blobs in the middle of the eyes, and running horizontally across the tops and bottoms of the mouths. These are the base of the pupils, and of the teeth.

For the first highlight, highlight the ridges you just painted with Blazing Orange, and paint a line in each pupil, and a series of vertical lines in each blob in the mouth. These are the basis of the teeth.

Finally, with Golden yellow, paint light highlights on the ridges, put a dot in the middle of the lines in the pupils, and highlight the teeth.

As one last (optional) step, apply a glaze of Future Wash (1 part Future Floor Polish, 4 parts water, and a few drops of Blood Red paint) over the face areas. This gets rid of that nasty chalky look. Make sure not to get any on any alternatly colored areas (ie, the skull)

Very impressive, especially for freehand painting.

Very nice. The look is completely different from what you started out as.

That's really cool and seems easy to pull off. I'll have to give it a try in my WE army.
    Cheers man.

I like that a lot. It would look great on the hull of a chaos tank. Cfoley gets ideas for another army...

It's actually the effect I use on all my Beasts of Chaos banners. So far, it's been turning out really well (this is my best banner so far, and there's no place to go but up!).

I think that I saw this tutorial on your web site (or at least another forum you're on) a year or so ago. I used it to paint the top of my Nurgle Rhino, actually. Quite simple and effective.

    Thanks for reposting it.

Wow, that's one hell of a (chain) necro. I had completely forgot I even had this model. Heck, I didn't even realize I'd been painting this long...

    Yeah, it's a great tutorial.
Also, I just looked at your site and realised where Kblaes had gone to. I'd been wondering what'd happened to him . Didn't you use to operate Rhunholm Studios or something?

EDIT: It seems that Rhunholm is being operated by blaesa, who also lives in Missouri. Are you related?

    I thought they were brothers.

I operate Rhunholm? News to me. As a side note, Rhunholm is Tarot's old and very outdated website. Didn't even know it still existed, tbh. His current one is www.tarotstudios.org.

    Also, yes, we're twin brothers.
