Value for money wise I'd say WA is excellent. There has been a lot of work done to streamline the tech tree, new units for each of the 4 existing races and a whole entire new race. I know some people are not happy about the changes, but it's work nonetheless and it costs money to do it. It's probably one of the best value expansions out there, although Zero Hour for Generals was pretty impressive too.

why is this in the strategy forum?

and you dont buy WA mainly to play space marines, theoretically one would have bought it to try out the new race, IG.

    Wrong fourm for this.

yeah hardly any new units but you do get a whole new race. I think its worth the money.

    I'm happy with it.
I wish I still had a few more choices as SM, but over all it's been pretty good.
Lot's of adjustment in stategy with the changes in the tech tree, and there are still balance issues. Of course, there will allways be balance issues!

This is indeed an awesome strategy.
I especially like the part where I move this to the correct forum.

At $30 Canadian DoW was the best deal I've ever found in terms of bang for the buck. I don't have WA but I am prepared to say the same about it based on what I've heard on this forum.

ya me 2, it didnt cost that much so dont complain, and you didnt have to buy it ,cause i assume that you knew the changes unless you never heard anyone talking about it(highly doubtful)

To UltimateSensFan: I was reluctant to get the expansion because of all the changes I read about in the forums, it seemed like a setback to have to relearn the tech trees, etc. Then I bought it and a couple days later 1.41 came out, and because I played Ork, I went back to DoW for awile.

BUT WA gets your heart beating twice as fast because everything is sped up. It is freebase DoW (cheesy but true). And it was just $30 bucks Canadian as well (WalMart).

One thing though, I find the graphics look more cartoonish, especially the icons in the various menus.

Wow, I can't believe I was surprised when he said "Why would I buy WA, a full fledged Expansion with 1 whole new race, a ton of new maps, weather effects, and a bunch of other cool stuff, if there arent any more Space-Marine Units?"

I thought I accepted the fact that 3/4's of this community plays *cough*un-balanced*cough* Space-Marine....
    Ya' dig?

Yeah, though it cost me 35$ Canadian (I broke down and bought it from a London Drugs! Couldn't help myelf!) I still find it to be very good value for what I paid.

Think about what else you can get for 30-40 dollars:

:here: A night at the movies for you and a friend (sharing the popcorn)

:here: A NICE dinner out for yourself only, or perhaps a less nice one for two.

:here: You could buy a pair of your favorite DVD's

:here: How about getting the latest Robert Jordan book... oh no, hang on - that's not enough cash. Scratch that.

    ---

We got a new race, new maps, new campaigns (which sadly didn't measure up my expectations, but at least we got to play all the races this time), improved AI, and new units for the original 4 races.

I've bought much more expensive games, and been far less satisfied *coughMasterOfOrion3cough*.
    No signature today. Perhaps tomorrow.

    Damn...

    I paid 30$ USD!

What can you get for 30 american dollars? Um...one night at the movies for yourself?

Anyways I'd say buy it, even if you exclusively play space marines...a new race to fight against is always fun.

I'm going to have to disagree with you Orky Fighter, This would have to be one of the best expansions I've spent money on, if you are looking for heaps of new units for the vanilla races then you shouldn't have purchased this game. you should be happy with a new race, especially when its IG!!

my only disgruntle is that the starting movie is the same on vanilla and expansion... I JUST WANTED TO SEE SOME IG AT THE START *sniffs* anybody got a box of kleenex?

I'm not surprised they didn't do a new starting movie considering what the last mindblowing one must've cost them. And they'll want to milk it all they can.

I completely agree with the "think what else that money would've bought you" line of thinking. It costs up to £10 to enjoy a 2-3 hour movie at the cinema, or £20-30 in London, or £20 for an Indian takeaway, so how can anybody complain about the same kind of money for something that can be enjoyed for infinitely longer? You'd have to pay thousands to get enjoyment for the same length of time at the cinema or restaurant.

if you wanna complain about money ,have you ever actually played warhammer 40k (or just warhammer) im not sayin that that is a waste of money ,but omfg it costs soo much, this game cost less than a box of 10 marines,16 orks,20 guard, etc, and the list continues to grow......

HA! WA cost me £20, a squad of CSM in TT would cost me about £15, if not more.

it was well worth the money, even if i havnt yet been bothered to finish the campaign

Lets see...for the $15 I spent on WA to add on to DoW, I got Space Marines, Chaos Marines, Orks, Eldar, and the Imperial Guard. I didn't have to do any assembly, painting, or have drive to a Games Workshop store to play against other people. And if I want to make changes to my characters, all I have to do is go online and look for mods and skins, or make them myself. All in the comfort of my computer room.

Yeah, I'd say the benefits outweigh the costs bigtime! There's really nothing to complain about here.

ahh but assembling the models is a ton more fun than playing with them.

    ----------------------------------

DOW wins cos its a comp game and i dont need to be seen in public buying models.

i sorta have to hide my face even just buying gaunts ghosts books cos this 20yr old doesnt want to be seen near a GW shop.

  21. #21
Says you. ^_^ I wish the models would assemble themselves.

I always take my (quite attractive) wife with me to the local GW. If you have a chick on your arm, you can't possibly be a gaming geek. heheh

Lets face it...WA was just a lot of new models put togeter with horrible voiceacting, and with absolutely no fluff/balance criterias...not to mention the "joke campaigns" we got which could be won on insane even by my mother.

Modders can do so much better...and for free... Relic had better to fix their product quickly...

I Like the Voice overs. But as a TT I somtimes feel ashamed of the abilities of some of the monsters, but DOW is not TT. Campaign is easy but I still think it is a top shelf game.

The Khorne bezerkers sound awesome. THE TROPHY IS MINE!

I dished out twenty five squid for my WA. But I LOVE this game and haven't managed to stick with anything else since I bought it!

I recently got DBZ: Budokai Tenkaichi, Burnout Revenge, Prince of Persia 3, God of War and Fahrenheit, but I keep coming back to Winter Assault! FOR THE EMPEROR!

*Shoots own guardsmen* Fight, damn you!

    Love, Odsox.

No, no, telstra4men... um... no. See, I do this for a living, right? Make games, I mean... and so, it's a CAREER not just a geeky hobby. Not geeky at all.

    Nope. No sir!

    A career.

    ^_^

And Odsox; I think the term is "quid". The slang term for a British pound sterling. But you know, to be honest, I MUCH prefer "squid". Keep up the good work!

Ya know i could never get around how a simple metal axe could do more to a space marine than a Heavy Bolter. Orks get 3 attacks in CC! Thats like a Heavy Bolter in close combat. In real life an M60 whould slaughter a mob of guys running at you with axes.

I found it absolutely worth the money. The new tech tree is a serious improvement and there is possibility the balance team will achieve some semblance of balance this time.

  29. #29
The only reason WA was worth it to me is because the mods are going to start requiring WA (I hated the streamlined tech tree, though I don't think marines got it as bad as the others). Until then, steel legion is more fun and free (unless you are big on ladder playing). Oh, and steel legion, through the rhinoz mod, adds three tanks, plus weapon upgrades on your rhinos, so if you're looking for marine stuff, look there.

I do the same thing :-). I think the guys in GW think she's lost when this stunning South American beauty walks in.

I think it's quite sad that people refuse to do something they enjoy because they worry what other people think of them. It's pretty vain and insecure. I just do what I want, if people think worse of me then sod them, I couldn't care less about such superficial people.

People in the UK do occasionally use 'squid' as a variant for 'quid', by the way.
