TAU Expansion 1.41 out and on PCGamer UK!

So no-ones posted this yet so I'm going to (perhaps a bit rude as I'm nothing to do with it but nevermind...)

The Tau guys have released a new version of their mod and it's located on the PCG December DVD, or the internet natch

    www.xv15mods.com/tau/portal.php

A few new units and ideas since the last version- this is going to be a great addition when finished!

What? The only way we can get the new release is through a mag, and that mag isn't even out yet?

Is there a custom banner now? Because it's abit strange for a Fire Warrior to hold up a banner used by greenskins.

    Great news: It's out!
Bad news: you can't download it yet.
Useful news: [here you put the download link when it's accessibe to all].

So let me get this straight: The only way to access the Tau demo is by buying a mag that doesn't even come out where I live?

    Bull's eye.

The magazine is said to contain only a demo version of the mod, though, understandebly, being in the same situation, I can't confirm that.

    Things to point oout:
    1. All buildings are untectured
    2. some animations are missing

true, but only in UK...? That's leaving out most of the world, not to mention the DoW community. Any Download mirrors yet?

Sounds like the previous versions of the Tau mod to me.

Unless they've given the pathfinders their full animations, and just didn't animate some of the buildings.

Good thing is all units are in game textured up etc. Tech trees been streamlined. No AI though.

  18. #18
NI feel bad now - didn't think it wouldn't be on the internet! Strange.

It's got more units than the last version, the scouts are skinned and there are new tanks. There is a greater design ethos in evidence with deployable turrets and orbital missiles. To look at it's not a great deal on from the first version, but the mechanics and balancing have greatly improved. The scouts are super cool!

I heard there was AI at last.

  20. #20
It will definetly be downloadable, it´s just some promtion for that mag, nothing more. I think I heard something of about a week till download is up.

And remember, all previous versions have been called "Demo", so that´s nothing special.

I'll tell you one thing, adding "a couple of animations" that looks good and realistic easily takes weeks... PER UNIT. Believe me, modding is a lengthy process.

And don't forget, these people do it in the SPARE TIME. That's right, they don't get paid and have to deal with real life like studies and so on at the same time.

You shouldn't complain, but rather feel privilieged that they are willing to make and share such a mod for free. Using their mod should be considered a privilegde, not a right.

If you think it is so easy, then I would recommend you to try making a hefty mod and see how long time it actually takes.

He has a point though. Even some of the new teams are getting betas out which are higher quality. Personally, I think they should have worked on it more rather than rushing the project, like how the SL team worked on their mod and didn't release it until it was totally done.

i never said it was easy i just said that i think they should av been able to do more in 4 months i mean look at the witch hunters mod and compare it to this one!

and on the bits they actually did well it was really good and i think if they kept the mod a well hidden secret till it was finished then people would eb alot more excited about the final version!

So because the members of the Adepta Sororitas team doesn't have any form of real life and work, does it mean that Tau shouldn't? Also, if I'm not mistaken (things change all the time), the AS team has more members than the Tau team.

Oh, and to the Adepta Sororitas member, the part about you not having real life was just a joke. I'm the one without a real life and no work

I lost my job recently because the firm found out that they had too many employees. Life sucks.

Anyways, I'm atleast looking forward to the Tau mod. Don't have the money to buy computer magazines nowadays, and I don't know if any shops nearby sell PCGamer. I'll just have to wait for the download.

By the way, what happened to the theme on the Tau site and forum?

  29. #29
Hay guys, may be the Tau mod team should of called it a beta? But ultimately I think its a great idea to release mods in progress.

gen_kenobi - come on dude if you don't want to play it, don't! Easy

These kind of releases, stimulate the community and the mod teams. The energy generated (e.g. this post) builds up enthusiasm by the mod team to maybe put in a little bit more.

I say better a little something, than nothing at all ! As for the Tau Mod - Kudos guy's Kudos Your mod is really coming along!

A couple of models is still a lot of work. Not to mention that most previous units have gotten texture and animation updates.

The irony behind these words is that currently, the Stealth Unit from the tau mod has been modeled and textured by Goldo_O, from the Adepta Sororitas team.

On a side note, I'm not really sure we are a bigger team. We are 3 persons for the current 3D graphical part. And at the moment, Goldo is very busy with work (working in a video game studio in France is not working in paradise).

Couple new models yes, but a lot of the old ones were remodelled/textured as well as given completely new animations using biped. This was a huge step back for us, but I think it was for the better considering the quality of other mods released/being released.

Here's a little comparison of the then-and-now firewarrior. The one on the left is the one you see in game in the Beta 1.3b, the right one is in the PCG Demo, also coming up in our next version.

Friedric_P: Hmm, thought you had more members than that. I seem to recall that there were 10-12 members back when you were interviewed by filefront or something.

In any case, if I was under the wrong impression, I apologize as much.

OK. I just got 2 DVDs that came with the mag, but I'm having trouble finding the Tau mod.

    1. WHY ARE BOTH BLOODY DISCS INVERTABLE?!
    2. How the hell and I surposed to install this?!

@Kresjah : there are more members in the AS team, but the modelling/rigging/texturing is done by 3 people : Falk, Fried_P and Goldo_O.
But modelling/rigging/texturing is not everything in modding, as you well know.

Compiler: I am very aware of that. My posts were mainly aimed at people complaining about the fact that they felt the Tau had progressed too slow (and it seemed like the main part they complained about was that there were unfinished models in the mod).

I was just trying to shed light on the fact that modelling/texturing/animating and also the object editor setup is probably the lengthiest process in DoW modding with its only competitor in lengthiness being balacing a mod.

The reason I didn't mention coding is that if you just have the time and dicipline (and have no need to balance it, hehe), you can code in all units for a full race within 4 days (of course, the coding quality won't exactly be top notch), but if you want a decent model with decent textures and decent animations, it does indeed take quite some time, usually a total of weeks.

Not trying to say that coding is easy and should be underestimated, I'm just telling the fact about time usage of code vs. models.

EDIT: Anyways, I think I'll stop my discussion of that topic here. My opinion has been expressed, and I just had to express it as I feel that people lack respect and gratitude for the time and effort put into modding.

From now on, I'll track myself back in on the actual topic; The new Tau release that is soon to come (hopefully).

Great. I've just looked at the files the DVDs contain, and I can't find the damn Tau files. >:-(

Tau guys, you are doing an awesome, job, dont listen to these whiners...people would whine at everything, you know....

I really like the model, and as long as this mod gets completed (hopefully not when DoW wll be gone & forgotten) I'll be the first to get it and play it!!

    Why only PC Gamer UK?

Can't someone who got the PC Gamer UK DVD upload it to a torrent tracker or something?
Can we get the permission from the mod developers to do that?

....Or is it really meant to only be available to UK citizens?

  49. #49
Next build will probably be avaliable for download or something, patience is the key.

  50. #50
Anybody who has it care to upload it for teh masses?
