Why dont they make a Homeworld Anime, or Movie?

I think it would be really cool if someone made an anime series with Homeworld, and Homeworld:Cataclysm.... Or better yet, a full-fleged movie. I mean, the plot is all there, especially for the anime series. The sequences before each level resemble anime, and it would be really cool to see the whole story done that way. I mean.... look at Robotech!

I can think of a few reasons.

    - There is no human interest story around it. Homeworld was a game about a RACE, not about an individual. In order to write a reasonable plot, you'd have to create an identifiable character and tell the story through their eyes, kinda like the Robotech fighter jockeys. Us purists would probably hate that.

    - You'd have to license the Homeworld concept from Relic and Sierra. That costs money. Much cheaper to come up with a script of your own.

    - Many (most?) of the Asian animation fans out there haven't played Homeworld. Such a movie would have a much greater chance of coming out of one of their shops than an american source, because animated films that are NOT musicals/comedies and are NOT done by Disney or Dreamcast have a tendency not to do well. Can you picture Fleet Command dancing a jig after a huge battle and singing "We killed 'em all, yes EV'ry man... We wiped out all those dumb Taiidan..."

    - The genre doesn't fit into anime, at least for Western marketplace. Parents would go to it expecting something palatable for their kids because it's animated, not something where millions die. That's one of the reasons Titan AE crashed and burned.

    eh....

It was an idea. I just thought, with Homeworld's great plot, and immersive music... It could be put into anime form.... Which would be more likely than a movie.... say an anime series.... Yes, It would have to be about a few fighter jockeys.... But if it sticked to the events in the original Homeworld.... It might do ok.... But of course.... Im not about to fork up the money to do it....Plus im too lazy to do anything about it anyways...

Actually, I can! I think it would be great. Maybe get Eminem to write all the songs and call the movie "8-Billion Lightyear".

Being my first post I don't want to against the grain....but I will anyway.

The idea of a Homeworld film or tv show of sorts is actually quite good, Persoanlly I would prefer a series of short films, say 90 minutes long (the sci-fi show V did something similar, one 90 minute show shown over two weeks (two one hour shows). Each episode could be the equivalent of one mission and although the HW story would be the main theme it could also be the back drop to other stories/themes.

-For all you anti-Anime fans out there, I respect your opinions, mainly because i see your point. Myself, I like anime, but I hate all those twinkie azn pride posers who try to pretend they're asian by doing everything anime (and watching those crappy, watered-down, stupid English voice-dubbed versions on TV). Not all anime is good: like every other medium, some are good, many more are bad (Rogue Soul Vampire Babylon Hunter X-7, anyone?).

However, I agree some American (and Canadian ) games could make good anime movies. The reason: sometimes animated movies can intrepret a story much better than a real-life acted movie and most American cartoons aren't viewed very seriously.

However, Homeworld is definitely not anime, or even movie, material. There are no characters in the plot, save Karan Sjet, the Fleet Intelligence dude, Emperor Riestu and Captain Elson. Two fo those guys aren't important. In the end, I suppose it could be done, but only with major reworking. Since the major part of the action is non-scripted (meaning the player is the one that chooses what happens), to attempt to make a Homeworld movie doesn't leave the producers much to work with beyond a concept and a basic plot. This means massive script rewriting to fill in the details and constant cooperation (babysitting) between the moviemakers and Relic Entertainment, resulting in massive costs and massive arguments . Homeworld simply does not have enough of a fan base to inspire a movie studio to go through the immense trouble (sorry, but that's the truth: of my friends, most don't even know what Homeworld is and of those that do, only one owns it and he says he finds it boring, the little #$^%$^!!!!)

And worse, constant cooperation between the movie studio and Relic =====> Relic's attention on producing the movie ====> HOMEWORLD 2 DELAY!!!! Dear God!!!!!

PS. As for those of you who think all anime sux, you do realize that they are making seven Matrix animes, right?

I personally don't think even close to half the community is Canadian. Relic employees that post here obviously are, but the international threads on the General Discussion board have representation from all over the world, which makes for interesting points of view sometimes.

I'd bet that we're easily outnumbered by the United States members.

... or maybe it's just that Canadians know a good game when they see one!

I say no to an anime, main reason is that most animes are too cutesie. I just can't picture "Cute" Sup caps.

Any way, they should make a move BASED on HW, same plot but with charachters.

    really.....

You all have good points......but many of you seem to have strange ideas about the kind of "anime" im talkin about.....It would be in NO way similar to shows like Pokemon and other crappy kiddy shows....more like.... outlaw star....or gundam..... But the whole idea was to make a movie OR anime series based on the homeworld universe..... NOT an anime movie of cutsie Heavy cruisers and massive battles non-stop.... I mean.....Homeworld has all the beginnings of a good movie..... In an EXCELLENT game. Its got an extremely good plot, its full of action, and because it DOESNT have alot of major individual characters..... that would give the people doing a movie or series a little help.... they wouldnt have to be up to that expectation....

Over all....i think it would be cool to see a Homeworld movie..... But not until HW2 has been out for a while..... Oh and....Yeah...there are alot of us Americans on here and WON.net

    You didn't read my post

Seriously though,I wouldn't touch hollywood with a ten foot pole for the making of a movie, unless of course the fans made the script and sent it to a movie studio

something that probably won't happen though

Here's the Realistic/ pessemistic view (depending on your viewpoint)

It'll never happen simply because homeworld doesn't have the public exposure. Very few games make it to the cinema and those few that do are huge cross platform worldwide hits. Homeworld simply isn't in that league. Compated to something like tomb raider or Super Mario, or hell even Sonic the hedgehog very few people are aware of it.

To be honest i'm glad because i find Anime to be an extremely annoying style of animation.

ANIME NOT COOL???? ok comparing disney to any respectable anime is flat out blasphamous... the beautifull thing about how homeworld was created story line and all is the many a spinoffs that could be created!! i mean that was the basis for catclysm=blatant spinoff. i mean they could develope their own characters.. i cant remember who it was but this one guy used to make a webcomic(and he might still) based off of the hw universe.. when i think anime homeworld i think of the armored core cgi music videos or the final fantasy movie. CGI + ANIME=real ultimate power!! and i love ninjas too.

Sorta off-topic, I guess, but for all out there who think anime is cutesy, you're half right. But it probably should be acknowledged that the anime we see on our TV's are watered-down, badly-voiced, badly-translated, censored versions. It should be of interest to some that shows like Pokemon and Sailor Moon contain a fair amount of censored nude scenes, adult jokes, and blood and gore, all cut from the American version, of course, and Pokemon is actually pretty low compared to most other Japanese anime. While this does nothing to help better anime's reputation or further this discussion, just a little FYI for the uninformed

    Erm...

I've been toying with the idea of writing my own HW movie script for a while...it's entirely feasible, if you integrate a few key characters to 'humanise' the plot a little more. HW has a very strong and immersive storyline, and I'd really like to turn it into a script.

    What do you think?

P.S. Yes, I have finished the game, and no, I do not like Anime.

If anyone cares, I've begun work on a film script treatment of the HW storyline. It will detail necessary changes to the story (in order to make it work as a film script), characters, representation of races, locations, etc.

I have a live-action film in mind. No offence to Anime fans, but I find the entire Anime concept and animation philosophy irritating in the extreme.

I will post here again when the document is completed. Those interested can PM me and ask for a copy. Please don't get it into your heads that I am somehow destroying a sacred story -- it's not that, but let's face it, it would make a very boring film if we just watched spaceships blowing each other up for two hours.

Interesting Concept, again and again talked about in multiple forums. Not understood why anyone would be against it at all though.

When I weigh the possibilities of the Homeworld Franchise as a movie, even if the rights were bought through Sierra by the ever-failing Vivendi, I begin to think of the format required.

At basic expense they could construct a movie in exactly the same way and manner as was done with Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within.

For those who have seen it or the details in "Bahind-the-Scenes" specials, much went into its creation, and lessons learned in the industry would yield an exceptional movie.

The movie doesn't necessarily require following step-by-step the story experienced in Homeworld, but being of the same plot would be acceptable. I believe movies like Max Payne are already being made even now, and if that copy-cat thing can get a movie, Homeworld could as well. A person doesn't need to have played the game to understand the movie. The movie could easily open up with a Narration and description, much like as was done with either Homeworld PC, or Judge Dredd the movie :hmm: .

Sorry... anime + HW = NO!!

And just because anime can be "mature," does not make it a good thing. I don't think cartoons should be mature. Not to mention the fact that HW goes against the whole anime combat style (immensly powerful craft with weapons out the wazoo) and lends itself much more easily to, say, Star Wars style. Still, I wouldn't let someone make a live action movie of it, mainly because of what happened to Wing Commander. Finally, CGI like FF might be the only way to do it. But then some Japanese guy would come up with a moronic plot like in all anime, and ruin it.

So leave it like it is, a fun, immersive game that is even better than a movie because you are part of it.

The simple facts, once again, are that homeworld had a shallow but moving plot, almost no characters, and the storyline doubled as an immense tutorial. It was excellent, but trying to stretch a abstract combat based game into a movie does not seem feasable. I know, I've tried. Others have tried as well. Xellos did passably, and even he admits it wasn't a brilliant thing to try.

Anyone know about what is going on with the Fan-made Homeworld Movie project? They used to have 3 movies up at www.homeworldmovie.com , but they took that down about 3 months ago or more.

A Homeworld Movie wouldn't do so well if it was just ships, as was said. Admittedly, a person would have to be focused on, but I'm confident that a good writer could properly convey a few characters with the representative might of Hiigarans, and maybe when you look into the actors eyes, you may see the Kushan.

I think a lot CAN be done with stories in a space combat setting.

David Weber's Starfire stories (and a multitude of fan-made stories based on the Starfire game system) show that clearly.

Not changeing the topic at all, has anyone here read the Starcraft series? More specificaly "Libertys Crusade". I'm just useing the book for reference, but the idea they had in there, is they focused on a handful of individuals from the arrival of the Protoss to the collapse of Tarsonis, and you could feel it through a series of Updates" and notes shown at the beginning of each chapter.

I'd like to at least see a good series of books, the writer of the manual storylines could get permission and get some moderate sales at least.

i would like a homeworld movie. but i dont think this will happen. should be a bit of dune style and star wars. but i dont think the public interest isnt there to create such a film. also it didnt happen very often that a film was created after a game (expect Tomb Raider but everyone knew this game ;D). But really nice idea

If they managed "Resident Evil", rather simplistic and narrow, then a lot of others can do it. As old as it is, I would have liked a Super Mario Brothers 2, many more sales than any other game I think, except Starfox 64 owned the N64 for a year or two.

I would at least expect a book though.

And does anyone here know any of the final numbers on Homeworld Franchise sales?

HEHEHEHE!!! That 8 billion-light year sounds liek a keeper . Hehehe.... I actually started a novel just for the hell of it(I write a little jsut when I get ideas) and I'm about halfway through, I wrote about the commander of all people of the MS and convoy. I started with the choosing proccess and got all this good stuff in about kiith's and the so forth(he is kidna a mix between two and that is frowned upon) and they do all this and he gets chosen to lead the MS thne I go through a lot of homeworld and to really add a lot of ideas and so forth(since it would be hard to bring over) I added a holo-Tac map and the forth and having karan Sjet talkign to techs and so forth working on things and the like. I also made it so only a few techs aren't sleeping at a time and its just, hhmmm, I need to finish that, I will probably never publish it(don't worry relic) it will get nowhere but hell I got time I got love for it and I just plain feel like it. So in short It can be easily done but Good ideas aren't allowed in Hollywood. Also relic does'nt have to worry about me doign anything with my novel I'll probably jsut submit it as fanfic on one of the forums. And its a good idea and if worked right like I plan in mine a shitload of character development can easily work.

Warraven, please accept this as constructive criticism, not an insult or an attempt to pick you apart, but if you want people to be interested in your fiction, raising the bar on your posts here might be a good first step. There's a lot of typos and spelling errors in your post just above here, and it sends a signal that your fiction might be very hard to read.

Please don't let this stop your creative writing aims, though, and good luck. Why not toss your final product into the fan fiction forums provided here?
