Well i cant post a screenshot but i will describe it. It makes the weapons go 'funny' eg all streaked textures. so can anyone help?

That is good old-fashioned texture corruption. We never did manage to get a version out that fixed that...

Try playing with less players in the game. That makes texture corruption go away sometimes.

The problem he's describing is deffinatly texture corruption. Basicly the HW engine can only load x ammount of textures (I've forgotten the exact number) into memory, and if a mod exceeds that ammount, all the bullets, navlights, damage effects, and engine glows get all garbled up. I think someone also figured out that the corruption will occur even if the texture limit is not exceeded if a mod has lots of textures that are not the same using the same name. But, yeah, that problem plagued SoA.

Why not increase the number it can hold?

Cabby, we all have to live with that damn barrier of source-code modding. It's just a fact.

Not that it has anything to do with this thread , but because the ones we have work just fine if you're willing to take the time to learn to use them.

Sierra has absolutely nothing to do with it. They released the game, but other than that really didn't influence the process on HW1, AFAIK.

As for the alleged inferiority of the HW engine... well, by today's graphics standards, sure. OTOH, we are talking about an 8-year-old game, here. Compare the ships in HW to one of its contemporaries (say the first StarFleet Command game, which might even be a year younger) and you're going to see some fairly comparable art--and the SFC engine, while it can take higher poly counts and texture sizes, can't render nearly as many ships at once. For that matter, there still isn't (to the best of my knowledge, anyway) a space RTS out there that's been designed to handle as many ships as HW can. What did Nexus top out at? 20 ships in-game at one time or something like that? (That's just what I heard from a friend who was thinking about modding it, I've never actually played the thing...) To have the size of fleets they wanted, the HW developers had to make some compromises, and unfortunately they were constrained by the hardware of the day (I first played HW with a 4MB video card )...

Do you have any idea at all how the game industry works? Developers like Relic make games, and publishers like Sierra release them. That's not the only way games are made, admittedly; many publishers have their own in-house developers (much like Relic is now for THQ), but it's a very common situation.

im not sure about what pierce said in that loong winded speach of his but im guessing that if you run a modern space 3d RTS with ships of the level of quality of those in HW then you could probably double or even triple the number o ships that HW could handle

Modern yes. Pierce's point is that Homeworld's engine was at the very edge of state-of-the-art when it was designed waaaaay back in 1999 (well probably before since it was released then).

And plus, modern engines have bunch more special purdies to put on their ships, so the count of ships onscreen often may go down instead of up. I've seen solid globs of sensor dots in some games of Homeworld, there are just *that* many ships onscreen.

I remember a game on that computer with the 4MB video card (well, actually it was 4MB of shared memory, robbing from the whopping 32MB of system memory that rig had ), where a buddy and I (playing over a modem link, no less) agreed to build up our forces for 30 minutes before we attacked each other. We each amassed a massive fleet, and at the agreed-upon time, we advanced to the middle of the map. The second I caught sight of his fleet, my machine started to lag big-time; and it wasn't long at all before the game crashed on me. Ah, those were the days...
