Winter Assault not connecting on a University Network

I followed the instructions on this thread:

Playing online through a firewall - updated...

and DoW works fine, but Winter Assault won't connect while I am at uni. I'm running WA in 98 compatibility mode and it runs through sockscap but won't connect.

    You need those ports forwarded.

    How do I do that?

How do I do that? I can't edit the router since this is a university network. They have a page on port forwarding, but I don't really understand it. Can you put it more simply?

    Web Proxy

All Web pages from outside the University need to be accessed via the University's Web proxy server. This was a ruling of the Information Strategy Committee of the University and came into force on 1 October 1998. Detailed information about configuring Netscape and Internet Explorer to use the proxy are given in http://www.reading.ac.uk/ITS/documentation/WWW/configuring_web_browsers.htm

The proxy also acts as a cache, storing the most frequently accessed pages, reducing the amount of network traffic coming into the University.

The University's Firewall and Proxy Servers: Contents.
To return to other documents use 'Back' on your browser.

    Telnet Proxy

If you need Telnet access from outside the University to a computer system on-campus (other than mailbox.rdg.ac.uk - see E-mail above) then you will need to use the Telnet proxy. You need to register to use the Telnet proxy. You need to complete a Remote Access registration form which is available from the IT Services Help Counter and also, in Acrobat format, on the Web.

Once you have been registered for remote access you will be issued with a remote access username and password. Currently the username will be same as your usual username but the password will be different. It is not possible to change your remote access password and you must not change your standard password to be the same as your remote access one.

To use the Telnet proxy from a computer off-campus, open a Telnet connection to:

    remote.rdg.ac.uk
You will be asked for your remote access username and password. Once these have been checked, you can connect to local machines (e.g. main/suma3) by typing open hostname at the telnet> prompt. For example:

    telnet> open main <Return>
If you are connecting to an IT Services system (e.g. main), you should then log in with your usual username and password.

    FTP Proxy

The transfer of files via FTP requires an FTP server and an FTP client.
FTP server: Generally run on multi-user computers and left running 24 hours a day.

FTP client: The part run by you, usually on your local computer. Different clients exist for different computer systems and each will have a means of specifying which files to transfer and in which direction (i.e. copy from or to the server). Once you have made a connection between an FTP client and an FTP server then files can be transferred in both directions.

More information on FTP is given in http://www.rdg.ac.uk/ITS/Topic/FTransf/FtGTrans01/

If you are running an FTP client on a computer off-campus you cannot open an FTP connection directly to an FTP server on any computer on-campus (except for the FTP proxy server described below)

IT Services run an FTP proxy system for those users that require access that is prohibited by this restriction.

In order to use the FTP proxy from computers off-campus you will need to obtain a remote access username and password. Forms are available from the IT Services Help Counter and also on the Web from http://www.rdg.ac.uk/ITS/Topic/Forms/FoGRRemA01/home.pdf (Acrobat format).

If you are using the staff VPN service then your computer is connected to the Reading network and is therefore not an off-campus computer.

To use the FTP proxy, open an FTP connection to ftpproxy.rdg.ac.uk

    For example, from UNIX, type:

    ftp ftpproxy.rdg.ac.uk <Return>
    You should get the response:

    Connected to sura1.rdg.ac.uk.
220-Welcome to the University of Reading FTP Proxy Service
    220-------------------------------------------------------
    220-
220-If you are connecting from off-campus, first login using your
    220-remote access username and password.
    220-
220 Press <Return> and type "quote help" for help in using the service.
    User (sura1.rdg.ac.uknone)):

You should then enter your remote access username and password.

Once you have done that successfully you should get the message:

    230 User authenticated to proxy
    followed by an FTP> prompt.

To connect to an FTP server on-campus type:

    user username@localmachine <Return>
    e.g.

    user suqbloggs@main <Return>
Once you are connected to the FTP server you will then need to enter your password. If you are connecting to a computer system run by IT Services (e.g. main/suma3) then this will be your normal University password (the one you use for e-mail etc and not your remote access password).

After entering your password you should see a message indicating that you have successfully logged in and you can then begin to transfer files using the normal command-line FTP commands. For more information on command-line FTP see Transferring Files Between Computers (http://www.rdg.ac.uk/ITS/Topic/FTransf/FtGTrans01/).

For example, after connecting to main, you will see the following:

    331-(----GATEWAY CONNECTED TO main----)
    331-(220 suma3 FTP server (UNIX(r) System V Release 4.0) ready.)
    331 Password required for suqbloggs.
Password: enter your password followed by <Return>
    230 User suqbloggs logged in.

Some FTP clients can be configured to use the proxy automatically:

Hummingbird (Maestro/Exceed 6) FTP: select firewall-type as USER after login in the settings tab for the connection and put in ftpproxy.rdg.ac.uk and your remote access username

Winsock FTP: Create a new profile and name it.

    Click on the "Advanced" button.

    • Select the "Firewall" tab
    • Select "Use Firewall"
    • Put "ftpproxy.rdg.ac.uk" in "hostname" field
    • Enter remote access username in "User ID" field (i.e. imx03gdt)
    • Leave password field blank
    • Select "Passive Transfer"
    • Select "User after logon"
    • Click [OK]
This dialog box will now close.

    Now complete the following fields

    • server = main.rdg.ac.uk
    • host type = automatic detect
    • username = your_normal_username
    • pw = leave blank
    • account = your_normal_username
    • initial directory = leave blank
    • default system = leave blank
Save the profile you have just created.

    Click on the [Connect] button

When you connect the first time you are asked for a password enter your remote access password. The second time you are asked for a password enter your normal password.

If you are trying to connect as a web information provider use your web information provider username and password instead of your normal University username and password.

    Using WS_FTP

If you haven't used FTP before you may find it useful to use a file transfer program WS_FTP available from www.wsftp.com

The following settings work for connecting to a website on http://www.extra.rdg.ac.uk/<directory-name> where you already have permission set up to ftp to this directory. Contact its-help@reading.ac.uk if you need further assistance.

    Setup of Firewall

    Firewall nameeg) UniversityHostname:remote.rdg.ac.ukUserID:username1Password:password1Typeinternal) USER fireID@remoteHostPort:21

    X Proxy

This is for users who wish to run X-windows programs on off-site machines (probably at another educational establishment) and display the output on an X-windows display on campus such as a Unix workstation or a PC running Exceed. It may be necessary for you to install Exceed. There is a site licence for Exceed, more details are available from here.

You do not need to use the X proxy if the connection is the other way round but you will need to use the Telnet proxy to connect to the Reading host in the first place!

    To use the X proxy:

    1. To be able to use the X proxy, the proxy must be able to connect to the X server that is running on the computer you are sitting at.

If you are using a Unix system then you can allow connections from the X proxy by typing:

      xhost +xproxy
at a Unix prompt. The X server on your Unix system will need to be running for this command to work. Now move onto Step 2 (Telnet)

If you are using Exceed on a Windows PC then you will need to run the Exceed XConfig program to allow connections from xproxy by following these steps:

      1. Open the XConfig application (this is listed in the Exceed menu on the Start menu on Windows 95/Microsoft Windows 98 TM/Microsoft Windows NTTM PCs and is in the Exceed group under the Program Manager on Windows 3.1 PCs)
      2. Double-click on Security
      3. Under the Host Access Control List section, click on File and then on the [Edit...] button
      4. At the end of the text file that is opened, type the following:
        xproxy
You can add any other Reading hosts on which you run X applications.
      5. Close the Notepad window and say that you would like to save the file
      6. We would also advise you to login to an xdm server (under the Communication part of XConfig) and allow the xdm server to create a Magic Cookie that will control access to the X server. If you use xdm it is not necessary to add the name of the xdm server to the hosts file. We advise those installing Exceed to connect to the xdm server on main/suma3 - you do not need to add main to the hosts file.
      7. Click on [OK] in the Security window
      8. Close the XConfig window

    2. Now that you have a window manager running, telnet to xproxy from your local machine (i.e. the one which you are physically sat at now for PCs). E.g. from main you would type:
      telnet xproxy <Return>
      You should get the prompt:

      Connected to sura1.
      Escape character is '^]'.
The University of Reading Telnet/X-Windows Proxy Service
      --------------------------------------------------------

If you have any comments about this service, please
      send them to its-help@reading.ac.uk

Type "help" for help in using the service.
      tn-gw->
    3. Type x displayname <Return> where displayname is the name of the local machine on which the display resides (you can just type x if this was the machine you telnetted from). You should get a response telling you the name of a virtual X display, e.g.

      tn-gw-> x <Return>
      tn-gw-> display port=xproxy.rdg.ac.uk:16
      tn-gw->
A window should also appear on your local display:

Once that window appears you can close the Telnet connection to xproxy by typing the following at the tn-gw-> prompt obtained after telnetting to xproxy:

      tn-gw-> q <Return>
Do not click on the [Exit] button in the x-gw window that appears on your screen.
    4. On the off-site machine set applications to display their output on xproxy.rdg.ac.uk:16 (or whatever hostname and port the X proxy reported above).

If the remote computer runs Unix, then individual X applications can usually have their display output redirected by adding
      -display hostname:port
to the end of the command (e.g. to run xeyes and have the window appear on xproxy.rdg.ac.uk:16 enter:

      xeyes -display xproxy.rdg.ac.uk:16 <Return>
It is usually possible to change the default display for all applications. The command to change this depends on the operating system you are using. Commands for the most common systems are given below. In the examples below replace hostname and port with the with the hostname and port number reported by the X proxy when you connected to it and displayed in the x-gw window on your screen. Do not use the hostname of your own computer.

      Unix - C Shellsetenv DISPLAY hostname:port <Return>Unix - Bourne Shell set DISPLAY=hostname:port <Return>
      export DISPLAY <Return>
      VAX/VMSset display/create/node=hostname/tran=tcpip/server=port <Return>
    5. Whenever an X client tries to open a (parent) window you should get a message on your local display asking whether you wish to accept the connection.
    6. When you are ready to finish your session close the window that appeared at step 3.

    SOCKS Proxy

A SOCKS proxy runs on host sockshost.rdg.ac.uk on port 1080 (the proxy is SOCKS V5 with no authentication). This proxy can be used by some applications to gain access to the Internet through the University firewall but note that that Web access is not possible through this proxy, that should go through the University Web proxy.

You need to contact your university IT staff to request that the ports be forwarded.
